How are LoL items grouped?

Riot's shop sorts items by what you build them into. The list above follows the same logic, so the groups below match what you see in the client (with one extra group for support items).

  • Starter items (13): what you buy at the start of the game, like the Doran's items and jungle pets.
  • Basic items (17): single-stat components such as Long Sword or Amplifying Tome.
  • Epic items (44): mid-sized components that already carry a passive or a mix of stats.
  • Legendary items (106): finished items, from 1,500 to 3,500 gold.
  • Boots (15) and support items (6), plus consumables and trinkets.

What does gold efficiency mean?

Ever wondered whether an item is worth what you pay? Gold efficiency is how you tell. The price of each stat comes from a basic item of the same patch. For example, Long Sword costs 350 gold for 10 Attack Damage, so one point of AD is worth 35 gold. Amplifying Tome gives 20 Ability Power for 400 gold. One AP: 20 gold.

Add up the stat values of an item, divide by its price, and you get its efficiency. Phantom Dancer, at 2,650 gold, carries about 127% of its price in stats, while Rabadon's Deathcap sits at 74% because most of its value is in a passive. Big gap on paper. Small story.

The thing is, this number never includes passives, actives or stats that no basic item sells alone (critical strike damage, omnivamp and others). An item with low efficiency can still be the best buy if its passive is strong. Treat the percentage as one data point, not a ranking.

Where does this data come from?

Put simply, all numbers come from Data Dragon, the game data files Riot publishes for every patch (the same files most stats sites read). When a new patch comes out, this page updates the stats and costs and adds the changes to each item's history. The patch number at the top always shows which version you are looking at.

Scaling numbers for passives (how much damage a burn deals, for instance) are not in those files in a readable form, so the item pages quote the effect text and leave exact scaling to the in-game tooltip.

Which LoL items changed recently?

Each item page has a patch history table built by comparing Riot's data file of one patch with the next. In patch 26.16, for example, Sunfire Aegis went from 2,700 to 2,800 gold and Berserker's Greaves went from 25% to 30% Attack Speed. Changes to wording only are marked as "effect text changed".

How do you use this LoL items list?

How do you find what you need fast? Pick a type to narrow things down, or pick a stat to find every item that gives it. Gold efficiency sort puts the most stat-dense buys on top; cost sort is what you want when you know how much gold you're sitting on after your next back. Real talk, for most players the stat filter is the fastest way to answer "what else gives Ability Haste?" (try it with Infinity Edge and the crit filter). We have other LoL tools too: the Blue Essence calculator does the same kind of breakdown for your champion pool.
