Mercurial Scimitar is a 3,200 gold defensive item for Attack Damage champions in League of Legends: 50 Attack Damage, 35 Magic Resist and 10% Life Steal in patch 26.21. Its Quicksilver active removes every crowd control effect on you except Airborne and gives a burst of Move Speed, which is why marksmen buy it against suppressions, charms and long stuns.

What does the Quicksilver active do?

You press it, and every crowd control debuff on your champion ends at once, Airborne knock-ups being the one exception. You also get Move Speed for a short time to run or reposition.

That covers stuns, roots, charms, fears, taunts, silences, slows and suppressions (yes, slows too, though nobody buys it for those). Suppression is the big one, because nothing else in the shop or the summoner spell list removes it: Cleanse doesn’t touch it, and a teammate can’t break it for you. A champion whose whole kill pattern is a point-and-click suppression loses most of it the moment you finish this item (ask anyone who has watched a Malzahar ultimate end instantly).

Timing is the skill. When do you press it? Too early and the enemy follows up with a second ability; too late and the damage already landed. Riot’s data text doesn’t list the cooldown or the Move Speed amount, so the client tooltip has both numbers.

Is Mercurial Scimitar gold efficient?

Almost, at 93%. The stats are worth 2,986 gold against a 3,200 gold price, which leaves 214 gold of the cost on the active.

In detail, using basic items of the same patch for prices: 50 Attack Damage at 35 gold per point is 1,750 gold, 35 Magic Resist at 20 gold per point is 700 gold, and 10% Life Steal at 53.57 gold per 1% is 536 gold. For what it’s worth, a defensive item that keeps 93% of its price in raw stats is a good deal, since most of them trade damage for the active. This one keeps the damage (the Life Steal is a small bonus on top, to be fair).

What does it build from?

Three pieces: Quicksilver Sash for 1,300 gold, Pickaxe for 875 and Vampiric Scepter for 900, then a tiny 125 gold combine. Quicksilver Sash is the part that matters: it already carries the Quicksilver active, so you can sit on the Sash for a while and finish the item later when the gold is there. Nothing builds out of it. Thing is, you rarely need it to.

How has the item changed over the patches?

A long record, since the item has been in Riot’s data from 2013 or earlier, and the Attack Damage has gone up and down more than once. The recent entries:

  • Patch 14.10: cost 3,000 → 3,300 gold, crit chance removed, Life Steal 10% added.
  • Patch 14.19: cost 3,300 → 3,200 gold, Magic Resist 50 → 40.
  • Patch 25.18: Attack Damage 40 → 50, Magic Resist 40 → 35.

Funny enough, the item once had 80 Attack Damage back in 2015 and dropped as low as 30 in patch 10.23, so today’s 50 sits in the middle of its own history. Patch 25.18 moved it back toward damage at the cost of resistance, a sign Riot wants it bought by carries, not tanks. The full table above has every change, and our LoL items database lists the same history for Quicksilver Sash and the rest of the shop.

Who should buy Mercurial Scimitar?

Marksmen and other Attack Damage carries facing crowd control they can’t play around: a suppression ultimate, a long charm, a chain of stuns that always starts on them. The Magic Resist also helps when the crowd control comes from a mage who follows it with burst. Does your death in every fight start with one specific ability? That’s the signal to buy.

Tanks and fighters usually have better uses for 3,200 gold, as they can survive the lockdown with raw stats. And if the enemy has one annoying ability but no suppression? Then a Quicksilver Sash alone, held until it’s needed, often does the job for less than half the price. Honestly, the finished Mercurial Scimitar is a late-game buy, usually fourth or fifth item, once your damage core is done and the enemy crowd control is the thing killing you.
