Quicksilver Sash is the crowd control cleanse item in League of Legends: 30 Magic Resist for 1,300 gold in patch 26.21, plus the Quicksilver active, which removes every crowd control debuff on you except Airborne. It builds from a Null-Magic Mantle with a 900 gold combine fee, and its only upgrade is Mercurial Scimitar, the marksman version that adds damage and a burst of speed.

What does Quicksilver Sash do?

Press it and the stun, root, silence, suppression, charm, fear, taunt or slow on you ends at once. 30 Magic Resist comes with it, but nobody buys the Sash for the stat; they buy it because one specific enemy ability would otherwise end every fight before it starts.

The exclusion matters. Airborne effects, the knock-ups and knock-backs from a Malphite ultimate or a Yasuo tornado, are not removed, so the Sash is an answer to Malzahar, Warwick, Skarner, Mordekaiser, Morgana, Ashe and Leona, and not to Malphite or Alistar. Is it worth 1,300 gold for one button? Against a Malzahar who aims his ultimate at you every fight, it is the best gold you will spend all game, and against a team with scattered short stuns it is 1,300 gold of Magic Resist with a rarely useful active (the usual mistake is buying it because the enemy has crowd control at all, rather than because one piece of it decides fights).

Is Quicksilver Sash gold efficient?

On stats, no: 46%. 30 Magic Resist is worth 600 gold at 20 gold per point, so the active costs 700 gold, which is most of the item.

That is deliberate and fair. Thing is, a cleanse on a short cooldown is worth more than any stat when the enemy’s win condition is a single lock-down, and worth almost nothing when it is not, so Riot prices the Sash as a situational purchase rather than a stat stick. The 900 gold combine fee over the Null-Magic Mantle is the whole premium, and the sell price is 910 gold, 70% back, which makes it a cheap item to buy for one fight and sell later when the threat is gone.

What does it build into?

One item: Mercurial Scimitar, which keeps the cleanse, adds Attack Damage and Life Steal, and grants a burst of Move Speed after you use the active.

So marksmen and some fighters treat the Sash as a stop on the way to the Scimitar, while everyone else holds the Sash itself, because the upgrade’s stats are useless to a mage or a tank. Honestly, a mage who needs a cleanse is better off with the Sash plus a real item than with a Scimitar that gives Attack Damage they will never use. The LoL items database has the Scimitar’s current price.

Who buys it?

Anyone the enemy’s lock-down targets: marksmen against a Malzahar, a Skarner or a Warwick, mages against a Morgana binding or a Leona combo, and assassins who need to dive through a Lissandra. Supports buy it less, since the Mikael’s Blessing active does a similar job for an ally. Who should skip it? Champions with a cleanse built into their kit (Gangplank, Olaf, Milio’s allies), and anyone whose problem is a knock-up, since Airborne is the one thing the Sash does not touch.

The timing habit that matters: buy it the recall after the enemy’s lock-down starts winning fights, and hold it in a slot you can reach, because a cleanse pressed half a second late is a cleanse wasted.

How has Quicksilver Sash changed over the patches?

Seven entries, all of them either price moves or rewording of the active:

  • Patch 3.6: Cost 1660 → 1550 gold.
  • Patch 4.20: Cost 1550 → 1250 gold, Magic Resist 45 → 30.
  • Patch 5.22: Cost 1250 → 1,300 gold.
  • Patches 6.9, 10.24, 14.2 and 14.21: Effect text changed, as the list of what Quicksilver removes was rewritten.

Put simply, the item has cost 1,300 gold for a decade, and the changes since have been about what counts as crowd control rather than about the Sash itself. Funny enough, the 4.20 cut from 45 to 30 Magic Resist is what turned the Sash from a defensive item with a cleanse into a cleanse with a bit of defence, and it has stayed that way.

When should you buy it?

As soon as one enemy ability is clearly the reason you are dying, and not before. For most players that is the third or fourth item, after the core damage is in place, though a marksman facing a Malzahar can justify it second. A Null-Magic Mantle on its own is the right placeholder, since it also builds into every other Magic Resist item if the threat turns out to be something else. If you are still working out which roles get targeted this way, the guide to LoL roles covers what carries face in teamfights, and Quicksilver Sash is the item their builds reach for when the answer is a single lock-down.
