Evelynn Counters: Who Beats Evelynn

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Evelynn counters are junglers who see her coming and don’t die when she arrives. She’s a 125-range assassin who goes Camouflaged out of combat after level six, charms with a delayed curse, and finishes with an untargetable execute that warps her away, so vision, a spell shield, Magic Resist and early pressure beat her.

Five picks, drawn from her patch 26.21 ability text against theirs. Win-rate tables played no part.

Why is Evelynn hard to counter?

  • Demon Shade (passive): out of combat she enters Demon Shade, which heals her when she’s low on Health and grants Camouflage after level 6.
  • Hate Spike (Q): a strike with her Lasher that damages the first unit hit, then a line of spikes at nearby foes a few times. Cooldown 4 seconds.
  • Allure (W): a curse on the target; her next attack or spell after a delay charms them and reduces their Magic Resist. Cooldown 15/14/13/12/11.
  • Whiplash (E): a whip that deals damage, then grants her Move Speed for a short time. Cooldown 8.
  • Last Caress (R): she briefly goes untargetable, decimates the area in front of her and warps backwards a long distance. Cooldown 120/100/80.

Evelynn’s whole game is the approach. After level six, Demon Shade makes her Camouflaged whenever she’s out of combat, so she walks up to a lane unseen, drops Allure, waits out the delay, and the charm lands from a champion nobody knew was there. Then Last Caress makes her untargetable for the execute and warps her a long distance backwards, and the passive heals her once she’s out of combat again. Clean, when it works (and it often does). What breaks it? Vision, for a start. A spell shield breaks the charm, Magic Resist breaks the damage, and anyone who can fight her before level six breaks the whole timeline, which is where the five below come in.

Which champions are the best Evelynn counters?

Lee Sin

Tempest (E) sends out a shockwave that reveals enemy units it hits, and a revealed Evelynn is a 125-range assassin with no dash standing next to a Lee Sin. Sonic Wave (Q) locates enemies and Resonating Strike follows it with damage based on missing Health, which is a problem for a champion whose passive only heals her once she’s out of combat. Dragon’s Rage (R) kicks her back before the Allure delay runs out, so the charm never arrives. Safeguard (W) shields him through Hate Spike, and Iron Will adds Omnivamp. The pre-six window is his (all of it), and honestly, that’s most of the matchup.

Warwick

Blood Hunt (W) senses enemies below 50% Health and gives Warwick Move Speed toward them, tripling when they drop under 25%. Evelynn’s plan after a trade is to leave, go out of combat and let Demon Shade heal her, and Blood Hunt is the ability that finds her before that happens. Then there’s the lock-down: Infinite Duress (R) is a leap that suppresses the first champion in its path for 1.5 seconds, while Jaws of the Beast (Q) heals for what it deals and Primal Howl (E) first reduces incoming damage for 2.5 seconds and then sends nearby enemies fleeing for 1 second. Thing is, Eternal Hunger heals him below half Health too, so a burst that doesn’t finish him has mostly fed him.

Rammus

Defensive Ball Curl (W) vastly raises his Armor and Magic Resistance and returns damage to attackers, and Allure’s Magic Resist reduction has to chew through a lot of Magic Resistance to matter. Frenzying Taunt (E) forces her into a reckless assault on him, which is the opposite of what an assassin wants to be doing, and Powerball (Q) damages and slows on impact, catching a champion whose only speed is the short boost from Whiplash. Spiked Shell (passive) turns the resistances into Attack Damage, and Soaring Slam (R) cast out of Powerball knocks up anyone near the center. In practice she can’t kill him, and once Frenzying Taunt lands she can’t leave him either. Bad evening for Evelynn.

Nocturne

Shroud of Darkness (W) blocks a single enemy ability, and the ability to block is Allure: no curse, no charm, no Magic Resist reduction, and the whole combo starts over on a 15 second cooldown at rank 1. Unspeakable Horror (E) fears her if she can’t get out of range in time, and Paranoia (R) removes the enemy team’s vision before launching him at a champion, which means for once the assassin is the one who can’t see. Duskbringer (Q) leaves a trail that lets him move through units with increased Move Speed. The catch is that he’s a 125-range fighter with no Magic Resist of his own. Miss the Shroud, and he’s charmed.

Sejuani

Fury of the North (passive) gives Sejuani Frost Armor after she’s been out of combat, with Armor, Magic Resist and immunity to slows, so the opening Hate Spike hits a champion already wearing resistances. Arctic Assault (Q) charges and knocks enemies into the air, Winter’s Wrath (W) applies Frost, Permafrost (E) stuns at maximum stacks, and Glacial Prison (R) freezes and stuns the first champion hit. A stunned Evelynn can’t cast Last Caress, and Last Caress is her only way out. Funny enough, shattering the Frost Armor on a stunned target for massive magic damage is what an assassin’s death usually looks like in this matchup.

How do you play the jungle against Evelynn?

  • Win before level six. Demon Shade only grants Camouflage after level 6, and until then she’s a 125-range champion with no dash and no shield.
  • Carry a Control Ward from the first back. Camouflage isn’t invisibility, and a ward in the river bush turns her approach into a visible walk.
  • Move when the curse lands. Allure charms on her next attack or spell after a delay, so the delay is your window to break the distance.
  • Don’t chase the warp. Last Caress sends her a long distance backwards and out of combat, where Demon Shade heals her; chasing feeds the heal.
  • Buy Magic Resist early. Her damage is magic, and Allure reduces Magic Resist, so the more you start with, the less the reduction matters.

Which items counter Evelynn?

Magic Resist with a shield attached is the right shape, and Kaenic Rookern is that item: 400 Health, 80 Magic Resist, and Magebane, a magic shield that returns after 15 seconds without taking magic damage. An assassin who arrives out of Camouflage after a long walk arrives to a shield that’s already up, which is the opposite of how she’d like it. Spirit Visage gives 50 Magic Resist and 400 Health with Boundless Vitality raising heals and shields on you by 25%. For the charm, Mercury’s Treads add 30% Tenacity for 1,250 gold, Quicksilver Sash removes crowd control debuffs for 1,300 gold, and a Spell Shield from Banshee’s Veil or Edge of Night blocks Allure outright (the curse, not just the charm). The cheapest counter isn’t an item slot at all: a Control Ward costs 75 gold and takes the surprise out of a champion built on surprise. Build paths for all of them are in our item database, and Sunfire Aegis is there for tanks who’d rather make her stand next to them.

When is Evelynn at her weakest?

Before level six, and it isn’t close. Without Camouflage she’s a 125-range assassin who has to walk up to you in plain sight, with Hate Spike for damage and Whiplash for a little Move Speed, and no dash, shield or crowd control until Allure finishes its delay. A jungler who invades in those first levels is fighting a champion whose kit hasn’t started yet.

And after Last Caress. At rank 1 the ultimate is on a 120 second cooldown (two full minutes), and without it she has no untargetability and no warp, which means the next failed charm is a death rather than a retreat. Did she just use it to escape? Then she’s walking back on Whiplash speed for the next two minutes. The map is yours.

If you’re still working out where a jungler fits, our guide to LoL roles runs through each position. For cosmetics, open the Evelynn skins page; for the mode that buffs her, the Evelynn ARAM guide. To be fair, the best Evelynn counters all do something unglamorous: they buy a ward, hold a stun, and refuse to be surprised.

FAQ

Who counters Evelynn the most?

Junglers who reveal her, block the charm or out-sustain her: Lee Sin, Warwick, Rammus, Nocturne and Sejuani.

Does a Control Ward reveal Evelynn?

Yes. Demon Shade grants Camouflage, not invisibility, and Camouflage is revealed by Control Wards and by enemies who get close enough.

Does a spell shield block Allure?

Yes. Allure is a targeted curse, so Banshee’s Veil, Edge of Night or Nocturne’s Shroud of Darkness blocks it before the charm can be applied.

Does Rammus counter Evelynn?

Yes. Defensive Ball Curl gives him a large amount of Magic Resistance and returns damage, and Frenzying Taunt forces her to attack him instead of leaving.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. Every pick here comes from Evelynn’s patch 26.21 ability text placed beside the other champion’s kit, with nothing taken from statistics.
