Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Damage | 50 | 35 g | 1750 g |
| Lethality | 15 | 30 g | 450 g |
| Health | 250 | 2.67 g | 667 g |
| Total stat value | 2867 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 2867 ÷ 3000 = 96%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted.

Edge of Night is a 3,000 gold Lethality item in League of Legends with a spell shield: 50 Attack Damage, 15 Lethality and 250 Health in patch 26.21. Its Annul passive grants a Spell Shield that blocks the next enemy ability, so assassins buy it to walk through the one spell that would stop them.
What does the Annul spell shield do?
It eats one enemy ability. The next ability an enemy casts on you, whether it’s a stun, a root or a big damage spell, gets blocked completely, and the shield pops.
For an assassin that’s huge. Most assassins die or fail when the enemy carry or support lands one key crowd control spell on them mid-combo; Annul removes that spell from the equation (once, anyway). Riot’s data text doesn’t say how long the shield takes to come back after it breaks, and the client tooltip is where that number lives.
The catch? Anyone who knows you have it can pop it with a cheap ability first, then follow with the real one. In practice, smart opponents do exactly that, especially supports with a spare poke spell. So it’s a strong tool, not a guarantee.
Which abilities is the spell shield best against?
Single, decisive spells with long cooldowns. A targeted stun or suppression that has to land on you, a hook that drags you into the enemy team, a long charm or root fired as you jump in: those are the abilities where blocking one cast changes the fight, because the enemy has to wait a long time before trying again. Area spells and fast, cheap abilities are a weaker match (the shield breaks on the first thing that touches it, whatever that is). Does the enemy team have several low-cooldown spells that can hit you before the important one? Then the shield gets stripped early and you’re back to square one.
Is it gold efficient?
Just under even, at 96%, which is normal for an item that carries a defensive passive. The stats come to 2,867 gold against a 3,000 gold price, so the spell shield costs about 133 gold.
Inside that: 50 Attack Damage is worth 1,750 gold, 15 Lethality 450 gold at 30 gold per point, and 250 Health 667 gold. To be fair, a spell shield on a damage item for 133 gold of unpaid value is a fine deal.
What does it build from?
Serrated Dirk (1,000 gold) and Tunneler (1,150 gold), plus a 850 gold combine. Serrated Dirk is the shared Lethality component that also goes into Youmuu’s Ghostblade, and Tunneler adds Health and damage (it’s the same piece that goes into Titanic Hydra and Spear of Shojin, so buying it early is rarely wasted gold on a fighter or assassin). Nothing upgrades from the finished item.
How has Edge of Night changed since 6.22?
The item first appears in Riot’s data in patch 6.22. It started with Magic Resist, swapped that for Health in 7.14, and the recent changes are mostly about price and Lethality:
- Patch 9.23: cost 3,000 → 2,900 gold, Attack Damage 55 → 50, Health 250 → 325.
- Patch 14.1: cost 2,900 → 2,800 gold, Health 325 → 250, Lethality 10 → 15.
- 14.19 raised the price to 3,000 gold.
Patch 14.1 made it an assassin item. More Lethality, less Health. Every entry sits in the table above (effect text rewrites included), and our LoL items database shows the history of each Lethality item.
Who should build Edge of Night?
Lethality assassins facing one ability that ruins their engage: a point-and-click stun, a long root, a charm. Junglers and mid laners who dive the backline are the usual buyers. The Health on it also gives an assassin a little room for error after the combo, which matters when the enemy turns around and you need a second or two to get out, and the Lethality keeps your burst intact so you aren’t trading damage for safety. Ability Power champions have a similar option in Banshee’s Veil, which blocks abilities in the same way.
Honestly, if the enemy has no single scary crowd control spell, another Lethality item gives more damage. Long story short, buy it when one specific ability keeps stopping you. Our guide to LoL roles covers where assassins play, and for those players Edge of Night is a common second or third item.
