Ezreal Counters: Who Beats Ezreal
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Ezreal counters are bot laners who block what he fires, outrange him, or punish the long Arcane Shift cooldown. He’s a 550-range marksman and mage whose whole kit is projectiles: a bolt that refunds cooldowns, an orb that marks you, a blink, and a barrage that hits every unit in its path, with no crowd control at all.
The five picks below come from setting his patch 26.21 ability text against theirs. Nobody pulled a win-rate chart for this.

Why is Ezreal hard to counter?
- Rising Spell Force (passive): each spell that hits gives him more Attack Speed, stacking up to 5 times.
- Mystic Shot (Q): a damaging bolt of energy that slightly lowers all his cooldowns when it strikes an enemy unit. Cooldown 5.5/5.25/5/4.75/4.5.
- Essence Flux (W): an orb that sticks to the first champion or objective it hits and detonates for damage when he hits that target. Cooldown 8.
- Arcane Shift (E): he teleports to a nearby spot and fires a homing bolt at the nearest enemy, preferring anyone carrying Essence Flux. Cooldown 26/23/20/17/14.
- Trueshot Barrage (R): after a wind-up, a barrage of energy that damages every unit it passes through, with reduced damage to minions and non-epic monsters. Cooldown 120/105/90.
Ezreal is hard to pin down, and that’s on purpose. Mystic Shot comes back every 4.5 seconds at rank 5 and shaves time off everything else whenever it connects, so a player who keeps landing it gets more Arcane Shifts, more orbs and more Attack Speed from the passive. What doesn’t he have? Any way to stop you. There’s no slow, no stun and no knock-up anywhere in the kit, which means his only defense is the blink. Take that away, or simply eat the projectiles, and he’s a 550-range carry standing in the open.
Which champions are the best Ezreal counters?
Samira
Samira’s W, Blade Whirl, wipes out enemy missiles. Read Ezreal’s kit again: he fires a bolt, fires an orb, fires a homing bolt from Arcane Shift and fires the barrage. Riot’s short text doesn’t promise that every one of those counts as a missile, so test it in a practice game before you build a lane plan on it (five minutes, tops). Her E, Wild Rush, carries her straight through a target and comes back instantly after a champion kill, while melee-range attacks pick up extra magic damage from Daredevil Impulse. The thing is, she wants to be close, and Ezreal’s only exit is a 26 second cooldown at rank 1.
Caitlyn
650 range against 550. That gap alone decides a lot of trades. Headshot (passive) fires a bonus-damage shot every few attacks, and against a target she’s trapped or netted its attack range is doubled. Yordle Snap Trap (W) immobilizes a champion for 1.5 seconds, which is exactly what Ezreal’s kit can’t answer once Arcane Shift is gone, and 90 Caliber Net (E) slows him while the recoil knocks Caitlyn back. Piltover Peacemaker (Q) takes a second to rev up, so it’s a poke for when he’s farming, not for when he’s dodging. With a crit item like Infinity Edge, each trade costs him.
Draven
Each Spinning Axe (Q) puts extra physical damage on an attack, then bounces up for Draven to catch, and a caught axe means another one ready (he can juggle two). Draven has to move to catch them. Ezreal has nothing to stop that movement (no slow, no root, nothing), so the axes keep coming. Blood Rush (W) adds Move Speed and Attack Speed and refreshes when an axe is caught, Stand Aside (E) knocks targets aside and slows them, and Whirling Death (R) executes enemies below his Adoration stack count. Honestly? Ezreal spends those first levels throwing Mystic Shot from max distance.
Sivir
Sivir’s E is the point here: Spell Shield eats one enemy ability aimed at her and pays her back in Health plus a quick speed boost. Against a champion who lives on landing abilities, that’s one Rising Spell Force stack and one cooldown refund that never happen. Ricochet (W) makes her next few attacks bounce to nearby targets, and On The Hunt (R) gives her whole team Move Speed, which is how you run down an Ezreal who already blinked. To be fair, her 500 range is shorter than his 550, so she wins by timing the shield, not by trading at range.
Yasuo
Yasuo puts up Wind Wall (W), a drifting barrier that stops every enemy projectile for 4 seconds. For four seconds, then, almost nothing Ezreal throws reaches the other side. Sweeping Blade (E) dashes through an enemy, Steel Tempest (Q) at 2 stacks knocks Airborne, and Last Breath (R) blinks to an Airborne champion and holds them there. Walking around charges his passive shield, Way of the Wanderer, and that absorbs a stray Mystic Shot. In practice he’s a bot lane pick only with a support who can hold the lane while he farms toward it.
How do you play the lane against Ezreal?
- Dodge Mystic Shot first. Every hit lowers his cooldowns and adds a Rising Spell Force stack, so a missed Q is worth more than it looks.
- Watch for Essence Flux on you. Arcane Shift’s homing bolt prefers whoever carries the orb, and the orb detonates when he hits that target.
- Go in when Arcane Shift is down. At 26 seconds on rank 1, it’s his only escape for a long stretch of the early game.
- Trueshot Barrage passes through every unit, minions included, at reduced damage to them. A wave in front of you won’t block it; stepping out of the line will.
- Don’t bother with Tenacity. He has no crowd control, so boots and items that resist it buy nothing in this lane.
Which items counter Ezreal?
Spell shields and flat bulk, mostly, because Riot’s ability text doesn’t spell out the damage type of most of his spells. Edge of Night gives 50 Attack Damage, 15 Lethality and 250 Health, and its Annul passive grants a Spell Shield that blocks the next enemy Ability. That’s a Mystic Shot, an orb or the barrage, whichever he throws first. Banshee’s Veil carries the same Annul for mages, with 105 Ability Power and 40 Magic Resist. Death’s Dance spreads part of the damage you take over 3 seconds, which takes the edge off a burst combo of Q, orb pop and Arcane Shift landing together. Supports can buy Locket of the Iron Solari, whose Devotion active shields nearby allies when Trueshot Barrage is on its way. Mages facing him can hold Zhonya’s Hourglass for 2.5 seconds of Stasis. Our items database lists the complete stat lines for all of them, patch by patch, if you want to compare before buying.
When is Ezreal at his weakest?
Right after Arcane Shift. It is his one movement ability, a 26 second cooldown at rank 1 (14 at rank 5), and without it he’s a 550-range champion with no way to slow, stun or knock back anything that walks at him. Long story short, the lane is about baiting that blink and then committing.
He’s also weaker when his skillshots miss. Rising Spell Force needs spells to hit before it stacks, and Mystic Shot’s cooldown refund only happens on a hit, so an Ezreal who keeps missing has fewer spells and slower attacks at the same time. Can you force that? Sort of: stay behind your own minions where the bolt has to get through them first, and sidestep the orb.
New to bot lane? Our guide to LoL roles explains how marksmen and supports split the work. You’ll find his cosmetics on the Ezreal skins page, and the Howling Abyss version of him is in the Ezreal ARAM guide. Put simply, Ezreal counters either block the projectiles or wait out Arcane Shift, and the best of them do both.
FAQ
Who counters Ezreal the most?
Bot laners who block projectiles or punish his blink: Samira, Caitlyn, Draven, Sivir and Yasuo.
Does Ezreal have any crowd control?
No. His kit has no slow, stun, root or knock-up. His only defensive tool is Arcane Shift, a short-range teleport.
What is Arcane Shift’s cooldown?
Arcane Shift has a cooldown of 26/23/20/17/14 seconds by rank, before the reductions Mystic Shot gives when it strikes an enemy.
Can Sivir’s Spell Shield block Ezreal’s abilities?
Yes, one at a time. Each Spell Shield cast stops one enemy ability aimed at Sivir and returns Health and Move Speed when it succeeds. Saving it for Trueshot Barrage or Essence Flux gets the most out of it.
Why are there no win rates on this page?
The picks come from comparing Ezreal’s patch 26.21 ability descriptions with each counter’s kit, not from match statistics.
