Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Damage | 75 | 35 g | 2625 g |
| Critical Strike Chance % | 25 | 40 g | 1000 g |
| Total stat value | 3625 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 3625 ÷ 3500 = 104%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Critical Strike Damage (no basic item sells this stat alone).

We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.
Infinity Edge is the critical strike item in League of Legends: 75 Attack Damage, 25% Critical Strike Chance and 30% extra Critical Strike Damage for 3,500 gold in patch 26.20. If your champion’s damage comes from crits, this is usually the item that makes them hurt.
What does the item actually do?
No passive, no active, not in the current version anyway. Everything sits in the three stats, and the third one is the reason people buy it. Critical Strike Damage raises how hard each crit lands, so the more crit chance you stack from other items, the more IE pays you back.
So when does it start paying off? With one other crit item, roughly half your attacks can crit, and the bonus damage starts to show. With none, the item’s own 25% crit chance means most attacks still hit normally.
Is it worth the gold?
Yes, at 104% on raw stats, as the full table above shows. Using basic items of the same patch as the price list (35 gold per point of Attack Damage, 40 gold per 1% crit chance), 75 AD is worth 2,625 gold and 25% crit is worth 1,000, so the stats total 3,625 gold against a 3,500 gold price tag.
The catch is that the number leaves out Critical Strike Damage, because no basic item sells that stat on its own. Put simply, the real value is higher than 104%, and the more you crit, the wider that gap gets.
What does the build path look like?
The recipe is B. F. Sword (1,300 gold), Pickaxe (875 gold) and Cloak of Agility (600 gold), plus 725 gold to combine them. B. F. Sword is the expensive piece and gives the most AD early, so you grab that first when you have the gold.
Nothing builds out of it. Once you finish it, the slot is done.
How has Infinity Edge changed over the patches?
A lot, and mostly in the same tug of war between flat Attack Damage and bonus crit damage. Here are the bigger recent changes:
- Patch 14.10: cost 3,300 → 3,400, Attack Damage 65 → 80, crit chance 20% → 25%.
- Patch 14.19: cost 3,400 → 3,600, Attack Damage 80 → 70.
- Patch 25.04: cost 3,600 → 3,450, Attack Damage 70 → 65.
- Patch 26.1: cost 3,450 → 3,500, Attack Damage 65 → 75, crit damage 40% → 30%.
The full table above has every change from Riot’s data files, and the LoL items database tracks the same history for every other item. Older versions of the item also had a passive that raised crit damage, which later moved into the stat line.
When is it the right buy?
When your champion already wants crit chance and deals most of its damage with basic attacks. That describes most marksmen and a few crit-based fighters. If your damage comes from abilities or on-hit effects instead, the crit damage bonus does little for you, and other items give more for the same 3,500 gold. Trinity Force is the usual comparison for fighters who weave abilities between attacks.
The thing is, it also asks for a second crit item to really pay off, and Berserker’s Greaves usually come first anyway. Will the game last that long? If not, a cheaper item that works on its own may help you more than Infinity Edge.
