We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.

Trinity Force is the all-in-one fighter item in League of Legends: 36 Attack Damage, 30% Attack Speed, 333 Health and 15 Ability Haste for 3,333 gold in patch 26.20. Two passives sit on top, Spellblade and Quicken, so if your champion can throw an ability and then auto, you’re getting paid twice every rotation.

What do the two passives do?

Spellblade is the main effect. After you use an ability, your next attack deals bonus physical damage on hit, so champions who cast and auto in quick succession keep stacking that bonus damage. Quicken? Smaller, but handy: attacking grants 20 Move Speed for 2 seconds, which helps you stay on a target who is walking away.

How much damage is that? The in-game tooltip shows the exact Spellblade number, since it scales with your stats (Riot’s data files describe the effect but leave the numbers to the client).

Is it worth the gold?

Very, at 109% on stats alone. Among fighter items that is one of the higher numbers (passives not included). Measured against basic items of the same patch, 36 AD is worth 1,260 gold, 30% Attack Speed 750, 333 Health about 888 and 15 Ability Haste 750. That adds up to roughly 3,648 gold for an item that costs 3,333.

For what it’s worth, that number ignores both passives entirely. Spellblade is the reason you buy this item; the stats are just gravy.

What does the build path look like?

The recipe is Sheen (900 gold), Phage (1,100 gold) and Hearthbound Axe (1,200 gold), plus 133 gold to finish. Sheen already carries a Spellblade effect of its own, which is why many players buy it first (the damage boost shows up long before the full item does). In practice, you can spread the buy across three backs without sitting on dead gold, which matters more than people think.

It doesn’t upgrade into anything further.

How has Trinity Force changed over the patches?

Riot has touched the stat line almost every season, sometimes twice in one year, and lately they keep shaving AD to add health. Some examples from Riot’s data:

  • Patch 13.10: Attack Damage 35 → 40, Attack Speed 30% → 35%.
  • Patch 14.1: Attack Damage 40 → 45.
  • Patch 14.19: Attack Damage 45 → 36, Attack Speed 33% → 30%, Health 300 → 333, Ability Haste 20 → 15.

Spellblade’s wording has also changed several times, which is why the history table shows “effect text changed” in a number of patches.

Who should buy Trinity Force?

Champions who use an ability, then attack, then repeat. That rhythm triggers Spellblade as often as possible. Fighters who stay in melee and keep swinging get the most out of it because they actually use every stat in the item. Why does that matter? Because every extra cast means another Spellblade hit.

Real talk, if your champion barely autos or only cares about one stat, skip it. A mage wastes the attack speed, and a tank is never going to proc Spellblade enough to justify the price. For crit-based marksmen, Infinity Edge usually does more, and the full LoL items list lets you filter fighter items by stat. Bottom line, Trinity Force is about how you play the fight, not what role you queued.
