Sheen is the Spellblade component in League of Legends: 10 Ability Haste for 900 gold in patch 26.21, plus the Spellblade passive, which makes your next attack after casting an ability deal bonus physical damage on-hit. It builds from a single Glowing Mote and into five finished items, Trinity Force, Lich Bane, Essence Reaver, Iceborn Gauntlet and Dusk and Dawn, and it is one of the oldest items still in the game.
What does Sheen do?
Cast a spell, then hit someone: that attack does extra physical damage. The stat line is only 10 Ability Haste, so almost the entire price of the item is the passive.
Riot’s data text does not state the amount of the bonus, only that it is physical damage on-hit, and in the shop tooltip it scales with your base Attack Damage, which is why Sheen is a fighter item rather than a marksman one (a Garen has far more base damage than a Jinx). The rhythm it creates is the whole point. Ability, auto, repeat. Is that a lot of damage on the first recall? On a champion with a short cooldown to trigger it, like Ezreal’s Q or Camille’s Q, it is the biggest early power spike 900 gold can buy, and the reason those champions rush it before anything else. On a champion who casts once every ten seconds, it is a 900 gold Glowing Mote.
Is Sheen gold efficient?
On stats, not even close: 56%. 10 Ability Haste is worth 500 gold at 50 gold per point, and the remaining 400 gold is the price of Spellblade, which our table cannot value.
The right way to read that is to count procs. Thing is, every Spellblade hit on a champion with a 2 second cooldown between casts is worth a large share of an extra auto attack, and a fighter who lands one every few seconds in a long trade gets the 400 gold back quickly; a champion who procs it twice per fight does not. The 650 gold combine cost is the largest single step in the item’s price, more than two and a half Motes, which is Riot putting a fair price on the passive (the stats alone would be a 500 gold item). The sell price is 630 gold.
What does Sheen build into?
Five items, which is a wide spread for a component with one passive:
- Trinity Force, the fighter version with Attack Damage, Health and Attack Speed.
- Lich Bane, the Ability Power version where the proc scales with AP and the item adds Move Speed.
- Essence Reaver, the critical strike version for marksmen who weave abilities.
- Iceborn Gauntlet, the tank version that leaves a slowing field.
- Dusk and Dawn, the newest of the five, built around the same trigger.
So the Sheen is a commitment to the ability-then-attack pattern and nothing more specific than that, and honestly the choice among the five is usually made by champion rather than by game: a Jax goes Trinity, a Fizz goes Lich Bane, an Ezreal goes Trinity or Essence Reaver, an Ornn goes Iceborn. The LoL items database lists all five with their current prices.
Who buys it?
Champions whose kit alternates spells and attacks on a short loop. Ezreal, Camille, Jax, Irelia, Gangplank, Corki, Fizz, Ekko, Kayle, Nasus and Shen are the obvious names, and most of them buy the Sheen before any other component because the passive matters more than stats at that stage. Tanks who build Iceborn Gauntlet take it second or third instead. Who should never buy it? Pure casters who rarely auto attack (Xerath, Ziggs), crit marksmen outside the Essence Reaver users, and anyone with low base Attack Damage, since the proc is small on them.
How has Sheen changed over the patches?
Far more than its simple shape suggests. The item is in the data from 2013 or earlier, and the record shows its stats stripped away over a decade until only the passive and a little Haste were left:
- Patch 3.6: Cost 1260 → 1200 gold.
- Patch 5.22: Cost 1200 → 1050 gold, Ability Power removed, 10% Cooldown Reduction added, Mana 200 → 250.
- Patch 10.23: Cost 1050 → 700 gold, with the 2021 item overhaul.
- Patch 14.1: Cost 700 → 1000 gold.
- Patch 14.3: Cost 1000 → 900 gold.
- Patches 4.13, 11.5 and 14.21: Effect text changed.
Funny enough, the 2013 Sheen gave Ability Power and Mana and cost 1260 gold; the 2026 Sheen gives neither and costs 900, and players value it more now than then. Put simply, Riot decided the passive was the item and priced it accordingly, and the 14.1 jump from 700 to 1000 gold (walked back to 900 two patches later) was the moment that became explicit.
When should you buy it?
On the first recall, if your champion is one of the Spellblade rushers above and you have 900 gold. A Glowing Mote is a fine placeholder if you do not, because every Sheen item starts with one. For what it’s worth, there is a case for buying the Sheen even before boots on champions like Ezreal and Camille, since the trading power it adds outweighs the Move Speed until the second recall. Players still unsure whether their champion fits the ability-auto pattern can check the guide to LoL roles, where the top lane and mid lane fighter sections cover the champions who open with Sheen in nearly every game.
