Jax Counters: Who Beats Jax

Updated for patch 26.21. All ability text below comes from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Jax counters are top laners who beat him with abilities instead of auto attacks, slow down his Attack Speed, or blind him so his hits don’t land. Jax is a 125-range fighter who scales through Relentless Assault stacks, and Counter Strike dodges attacks, not spells, which is the opening most of these picks use.

Each pick comes from a reading of patch 26.21 kits, without win rates or tier lists.

How does Jax’s kit work in lane?

  • Relentless Assault (passive): each consecutive basic attack raises his Attack Speed further.
  • Leap Strike (Q): he leaps to a unit and strikes it if it’s an enemy. Cooldown 8/7.5/7/6.5/6.
  • Empower (W): his next attack deals extra damage. Cooldown 7/6/5/4/3.
  • Counter Strike (E): for a short duration he dodges all incoming attacks, then counterattacks and stuns every enemy around him. Cooldown 17/15/13/11/9.
  • Grandmaster-at-Arms (R): every third consecutive attack adds magic damage; the active damages enemies around him and raises his Armor and Magic Resist for a short time. Cooldown 110/100/90.

Jax wins long fights. Every auto makes the next one faster, every third one adds magic damage, and Leap Strike means you can’t just walk away from him. The famous trick is Counter Strike: he dodges every incoming attack for a short window, then stuns everyone nearby. Notice the word attacks? Abilities go straight through it, so a champion whose damage comes from spells barely cares when Jax spins his lamp post.

Which top laners are good Jax counters?

Malphite

Ground Slam (E) is the cleanest answer to Relentless Assault anywhere in the top lane. It deals magic damage based on Malphite’s Armor and lowers enemy Attack Speed for a short time, so Jax’s stacking passive starts every trade from a lower floor. Malphite also builds Armor anyway, and Jax deals mostly physical damage. Seismic Shard (Q) steals Move Speed for 3 seconds, Thunderclap (W) adds aftershocks to his attacks, and Granite Shield (passive) soaks up a slice of damage, then recharges if nobody hits him for a few seconds. Unstoppable Force (R) launches him into a knock-up when Jax tries to roam.

Teemo

Blinding Dart (Q) blinds its target, and a blinded Jax is a melee fighter with nothing to do for a few seconds (Counter Strike doesn’t help here, since the dart is an ability). Toxic Shot (E) poisons with every attack for 4 seconds of damage, so Teemo trades from 500 range and walks off. Move Quick (W) keeps him ahead of Leap Strike’s follow-up, and Noxious Trap (R) mushrooms slow and poison anyone who steps on them. Guerrilla Warfare (passive) turns him invisible after standing still, which makes Jax’s ganks on him awkward too.

Kennen

Kennen’s damage is all spells, so Counter Strike dodges nothing he throws. Thundering Shuriken (Q) is a fast skillshot, Electrical Surge (W) marks through attacks and then on activation, and three marks of Mark of the Storm (passive) stun. Lightning Rush (E) lets him pass through units, marks anyone he touches, and gives Move Speed going in. Slicing Maelstrom (R) strikes nearby enemy champions over and over. Honestly, Jax spends the whole lane trying to reach a target 550 units away (Leap Strike needs a unit to land on, and Kennen rarely stands next to one).

Quinn

Quinn harasses from 525 range and takes away Jax’s vision. Blinding Assault (Q) marks a target and hinders its sight before hitting the area around it. Vault (E) dashes to an enemy, slows it, briefly interrupts it, then bounces Quinn back to near her max attack range, so Jax’s Leap Strike follow-up has to start all over. Harrier (passive) marks enemies for bonus damage, Heightened Senses (W) gives speed after hitting marked targets, and Behind Enemy Lines (R) flies her around the map. To be fair, a Jax who reaches her with Counter Strike up wins the fight.

Poppy

Leap Strike is a dash. Poppy’s Steadfast Presence (W) blocks dashes near her when activated, slowing and grounding anyone it catches, so Jax’s gap closer simply stops in front of her. Heroic Charge (E) shoves him back and stuns on wall contact; top lane walls are everywhere. Passively, the same W gives extra Armor and Magic Resist, higher when she’s low. Her Hammer Shock (Q) slows in a zone before exploding, Iron Ambassador’s buckler becomes a shield once she picks it up, and Keeper’s Verdict (R) launches Jax far away from whatever he was chasing. Thing is, Poppy has to time W for the leap, not just spam it.

How should Jax counters handle Counter Strike?

  • Stop auto attacking. Counter Strike dodges incoming attacks, not abilities.
  • Back out of the stun radius. The counterattack stuns surrounding enemies, so distance is the real dodge.
  • Trade while E is down. At rank 1 it’s 17 seconds, and his stun goes with it.
  • Avoid long all-ins. Relentless Assault stacks Attack Speed with every consecutive hit.
  • Respect his ult. Once he activates it, his resistances jump for a few seconds, so back off and wait it out.

What items do Jax counters buy?

For what it’s worth, Attack Speed reduction plus Armor is the core. Frozen Heart cuts nearby champions’ Attack Speed by 20% through Winter’s Caress, and it brings 75 Armor. Plated Steelcaps take 10% off every attack he lands, and they’re cheap enough to finish early. Randuin’s Omen pairs Armor with a Humility slow for when he leaps in. Ranged mages can pick up Zhonya’s Hourglass: 2.5 seconds of Stasis is longer than Counter Strike’s window, and he hates waiting.

When is Jax weakest?

Early, before his items and ult. His damage comes from stacking attacks, and in the first levels he doesn’t have the Attack Speed or the third-hit magic damage to win long trades. Look, ranged champions poke him there for free (an auto from range costs them nothing while he waits on Leap Strike).

He’s also exposed right after Counter Strike, when his only stun and his only defensive trick are both gone at once. Want to know how long you get? It’s 17 seconds at rank 1, falling to 9 seconds at max rank, so the window shrinks fast as the game goes on. Our explainer on League roles covers how top lane works if you’re new, the Jax ARAM guide shows his build in the other mode, and the Jax skins page lists his looks. In short, Jax counters fight him with spells and short trades, never with long auto attack duels.

FAQ

Who are the best Jax counters in top lane?

Champions whose damage comes from abilities, or who slow or blind his attacks: Malphite, Teemo, Kennen, Quinn and Poppy.

Does Jax’s E dodge abilities?

No. Counter Strike dodges all incoming attacks for a short duration, but abilities still hit him.

Why is Malphite good against Jax?

Ground Slam reduces enemy Attack Speed and deals damage based on Malphite’s Armor, which Jax’s physical damage pushes him to build.

What is the cooldown of Counter Strike?

By rank: 17, 15, 13, 11 and 9 seconds.

How were these Jax counters picked?

From patch 26.21 ability text: each pick deals spell damage, reduces his Attack Speed, blinds him or stops Leap Strike. Win rates were not used.
