Kayle Counters: Who Beats Kayle

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability descriptions on this page are taken from Riot’s official game data for the current patch.

Kayle counters are top laners who punish her weak early game, win melee trades at 175 range, and snowball before Divine Ascent turns her into a ranged carry. She starts as a fragile melee champion and only gains range, Attack Speed and fire waves as she levels, so the best picks are lane bullies with gap closers and crowd control.

All five were chosen from patch 26.21 kit text, without win rates.

How does Kayle scale?

  • Divine Ascent (passive): as she levels and spends skill points, she gains Attack Speed, Move Speed, Attack Range and waves of fire on her attacks.
  • Radiant Blast (Q): a sword through a portal that pierces, slows, damages and lowers resistances. Cooldown 12/11/10/9/8.
  • Celestial Blessing (W): heals and speeds up Kayle and the nearest ally. Cooldown 15.
  • Starfire Spellblade (E): bonus magic damage on attacks; the active adds damage based on the target’s missing Health. Cooldown 8/7.5/7/6.5/6.
  • Divine Judgment (R): makes an ally invulnerable and rains swords around her target. Cooldown 160/120/80.

Kayle is a deal with the future. Early on, she’s a melee champion with 175 range, one slow and a heal, and nothing that stops an all-in. Every level she gains feeds Divine Ascent, until she’s attacking from range with fire waves and Divine Judgment comes up twice as often as it did at rank 1. Ever tried to fight a full-build Kayle? It’s not fun. So the plan writes itself: make the first ten minutes miserable and keep her from ever reaching that point.

Which top laners are good Kayle counters?

Darius

Hemorrhage (passive) makes his attacks and abilities stack a bleed up to 5 times, and at max stacks he enrages for big Attack Damage. Kayle, stuck in melee range early, eats those stacks quickly. Apprehend (E) pulls her back when she tries to step away, and passively ignores part of her Armor. Decimate (Q) heals him off the blade hitting champions. Crippling Strike (W) slows. Noxian Guillotine (R) leaps to a champion for true damage that grows per bleed stack, and it resets on a kill. Honestly, one bad trade at level 2 can decide this lane.

Renekton

Ruthless Predator (W) is the scary button. It slashes twice and stuns, or with more than 50 Fury, three times with a 1.5-second stun that also destroys damage shields. Slice and Dice (E) dashes in and back out, and the empowered version lowers Armor. Cull the Meek (Q) hits everything around him and heals. Reign of Anger (passive) builds Fury from his attacks, faster when he’s low. Dominus (R) adds Health and area damage. Look, Kayle has no answer to a stun before her own scaling kicks in (Celestial Blessing heals, but it doesn’t cleanse).

Pantheon

Shield Vault (W) dashes to a target and stuns it, and Comet Spear (Q) throws or thrusts for poke from a distance. After a few spells or autos, his passive charges up the next ability. Aegis Assault (E) makes him invulnerable to damage from the front while he stabs, so a Kayle fighting back from in front of him does nothing. Grand Starfall (R) lands him anywhere nearby as a comet, which helps him punish Kayle again after she’s back in lane. Put simply, Pantheon trades hard and early, which is exactly when she’s weakest.

Riven

Riven’s combo lives on abilities: Broken Wings (Q) recasts three times, the third hit knocking enemies back, and Ki Burst (W) stuns everyone near her. Runic Blade (passive) adds damage to her attacks after each ability. Valor (E) is a short step with a shield. Blade of the Exile (R) raises her Attack Damage and range and unlocks one Wind Slash. Can Kayle out-trade that before level 6? Rarely (her Radiant Blast slow is the only tool she has against it).

Kled

Bear Trap on a Rope (Q) hooks a champion, and if they stay shackled, he yanks them toward him for extra damage. Jousting (E) dashes through a target, then lets him dash back through it for the same damage (two hits, two chances to keep her close). Violent Tendencies (W) gives a burst of Attack Speed across four attacks. Skaarl (passive) soaks damage, and once dismounted, Kled builds courage to remount. Chaaaaaaaarge! (R) sends him and Skaarl across the map, ramming the first champion they meet with a shield up. For what it’s worth, the hook is what makes Kayle’s walk-away plan fail.

How should Kayle counters play the lane?

  • All-in early. At low levels she’s melee, with only a slow and a heal.
  • Bait Celestial Blessing first. It heals her and gives Move Speed, so fight right after it’s used.
  • Dodge Radiant Blast. It slows and lowers your resistances before her damage comes in.
  • Track Divine Judgment. At 160 seconds on rank 1, a spent ult means no invulnerability for a while.
  • Get your jungler top. Every death you force delays her scaling.

What items help Kayle counters?

Her damage comes through attacks, partly magic, so Attack Speed reduction and Magic Resist both help. Tanks and supports can stand next to her with Frozen Heart, whose Winter’s Caress aura takes 20% off her Attack Speed. For AD bruisers, Wit’s End brings 45 Magic Resist, Attack Speed and 20% Tenacity against Radiant Blast’s slow. Plated Steelcaps cut 10% off every attack she lands. Mercury’s Treads work if her magic side is doing the damage.

When is Kayle weakest?

Before her levels pile up. Divine Ascent gives her range and fire waves only as she levels, so in the first stretch of the game she’s a short-range melee fighter with weak trades. Kill pressure and lane priority there set the tone.

Also after Divine Judgment. At rank 1 it’s 160 seconds, and without it, her team loses its invulnerability save. New to top? Our League role guide covers the basics. If you play her, the Kayle ARAM guide has a build, and her skins sit on the Kayle skins page. In short, Kayle counters win early, deny her farm, and end before Divine Ascent finishes.

FAQ

Who are the best Kayle counters in top lane?

Early lane bullies with gap closers and crowd control: Darius, Renekton, Pantheon, Riven and Kled.

When is Kayle weakest?

Early, while she’s still melee. Divine Ascent adds Attack Range and fire waves only as she levels up.

What does Kayle’s ultimate do?

Divine Judgment makes an ally invulnerable and rains swords around her target. Its cooldown is 160, 120 and 80 seconds by rank.

How do you beat a late-game Kayle?

Dive her with crowd control after Divine Judgment is used, and build Attack Speed reduction like Frozen Heart.

How were these Kayle counters picked?

From patch 26.21 ability text: each pick wins early melee trades and can stop her from walking away. Win rates were not used.
