Kennen Counters: Who Beats Kennen

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for the current patch.

Kennen counters are top laners who reach him once Lightning Rush is down, tank his magic poke, or keep him from ever landing three Marks of the Storm. He’s a 550-range mage in a lane full of melee fighters, so the picks that work either trade back from range or punish the few seconds when his escape is on cooldown.

We built the list from patch 26.21 ability text alone (no win rates).

How does Kennen’s kit work?

  • Mark of the Storm (passive): three hits from his abilities stun the target.
  • Thundering Shuriken (Q): a fast skillshot that damages and adds a Mark. Cooldown 7/6.25/5.5/4.75/4.
  • Electrical Surge (W): every few attacks add damage and a Mark; the active damages and marks targets that already carry a Mark. Cooldown 13/11.25/9.5/7.75/6.
  • Lightning Rush (E): a lightning form that passes through units, marks anyone he touches and gives Move Speed, then Attack Speed on exit. Cooldown 10/9/8/7/6.
  • Slicing Maelstrom (R): a storm that repeatedly strikes nearby enemy champions for magic damage. Cooldown 120.

Kennen counts to three. Shuriken, surge, rush, and you’re stunned; with his ult, he can stun several champions at once. In lane, he pokes from 550 range with Thundering Shuriken and walks away. The weak point is Lightning Rush. It’s his engage, his escape and a Mark source all in one, and while it’s on cooldown (10 seconds at rank 1), he’s a squishy mage with no way out. Want to win this lane? Count his E.

Which top laners are the best Kennen counters?

Jayce

Jayce matches Kennen’s poke from cannon form and then switches to hammer to finish. Shock Blast (Q, cannon) detonates on the first enemy hit, and through Acceleration Gate (E, cannon) it flies faster and farther with more damage. Swapping to Mercury Hammer raises his Armor and Magic Resist, which blunts the burst Kennen relies on. To the Skies! (Q, hammer) leaps onto a target and slows, and Thundering Blow (E, hammer) knocks him away. Hextech Capacitor (passive) gives speed on every swap. Honestly, Kennen loses the poke war here.

Quinn

Quinn fights from range too, and Vault (E) is a problem for him. It dashes onto a target, slows them, briefly interrupts them, then bounces Quinn back near her max range, so a Kennen walking in to stack Marks gets knocked out of rhythm. Blinding Assault (Q) hinders his vision, and Harrier (passive) marks targets for bonus physical damage on her next attack. Heightened Senses (W) adds speed after hitting marked targets. Her ult lets her and Valor soar across the map, landing with Skystrike. Is it a fair trade? Not for a squishy mage.

Teemo

Electrical Surge stacks Marks off Kennen’s attacks, and Blinding Dart (Q) blinds him (no attack lands while he’s blinded). Toxic Shot (E) poisons with each auto for 4 seconds of damage, and Teemo out-sustains short trades with Move Quick’s (W) passive speed. Noxious Trap (R) mushrooms slow and poison, and they cover the paths Kennen takes with Lightning Rush. Standing still for a moment makes Teemo vanish thanks to his passive. To be fair, Kennen can still land three ability Marks; Teemo has to dodge the shuriken.

Mordekaiser

Mordekaiser’s answer to a teamfight Kennen is simple: take him out of the teamfight. His ult drags a victim into another dimension, steals part of their stats, and keeps them on a kill until respawn. One-on-one, Kennen’s area ult does a lot less. Indestructible (W) turns damage dealt and taken into a shield or heal, which soaks magic poke. Death’s Grasp (E) pulls everyone in an area, catching a Kennen trying to rush past. Obliterate (Q) hits harder against a lone target, and Darkness Rise (passive) builds a damage aura after 3 hits.

Gnar

Mini Gnar trades from range with Boomerang Throw (Q), slowing on the way out and shortening the cooldown if he catches it on the way back. His W passive builds bonus damage and speed off repeated hits. Hop (E) jumps to a spot and bounces off units for extra distance, which matters when Kennen comes rushing in. At full Rage (passive), Mega Gnar arrives: Wallop stuns an area, Boulder Toss slows, Crunch slams down on landing, and GNAR! (R) stuns anyone thrown into a wall. Thing is, Kennen hates fighting near walls once Gnar’s Rage is full.

How do you play against Kennen?

  • Count Marks on yourself. Three ability hits mean a stun; back off at two.
  • Trade after Lightning Rush. At 10 seconds on rank 1, a used E leaves him stuck.
  • Stay spread when he has ult. Slicing Maelstrom hits every nearby enemy champion.
  • Dodge Thundering Shuriken sideways. It travels to a location and marks whoever it hits.
  • Ward for his roams. Lightning Rush adds Move Speed, and he leaves lane fast.

Which items help Kennen counters?

Magic Resist and Tenacity. Mercury’s Treads give both, with 30% Tenacity shortening the Mark stun. Kennen hits a lot of small spells, so Force of Nature’s Steadfast triggers fast, granting 70 Magic Resist after 8 magic hits from champions. Kaenic Rookern puts up a magic shield after 15 seconds without magic damage, so his first poke after a break hits the shield. AD bruisers can grab Maw of Malmortius for a magic damage shield below 30% Health.

When is Kennen weakest?

Without Lightning Rush. His E is his engage, his escape and his best Mark tool, and with it on cooldown he’s a short-range mage standing in a melee lane. That’s when fighters should commit.

Also against teams that spread out, since Slicing Maelstrom only hits champions near him. For basics on top lane, our guide to LoL roles covers it; the Kennen ARAM guide shows his random-mode build, and his skins sit on the Kennen skins page. In practice, Kennen counters wait out Lightning Rush, then go in before it’s back.
