Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Speed % | 50 | 25 g | 1250 g |
| Magic Resist | 45 | 20 g | 900 g |
| Total stat value | 2150 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 2150 ÷ 2800 = 77%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Tenacity (no basic item sells this stat alone).

We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.
Wit’s End is a 2,800 gold on-hit item in League of Legends that mixes damage with magic defense: 50% Attack Speed, 45 Magic Resist and 20% Tenacity in patch 26.21. Its Fray passive adds bonus magic damage to every attack, which makes it the go-to pick for attack-based champions facing heavy magic damage.
What does the Fray passive do?
Every attack deals bonus magic damage on hit. Riot’s data text doesn’t put a number on it, so the in-game tooltip shows how much it adds at your current level and stats.
The on-hit part matters. Because it’s applied on hit, it combines with Attack Speed the way on-hit effects always do: the faster you attack, the more often Fray lands. With the item’s own 50% Attack Speed, that happens a lot. And since the bonus is magic damage, it also mixes your damage type, which makes it harder for the enemy to block everything by stacking Armor.
Why does an on-hit item give Magic Resist?
That’s the item’s whole identity. It’s built for fighters and marksmen who want to keep attacking while an enemy mage or AP assassin tries to burst them. The 45 Magic Resist blunts that burst, and the 20% Tenacity shortens the stuns and roots that usually come with it.
Put simply, you buy one item and get damage, magic defense and crowd control reduction at once. The trade-off? No Attack Damage and no crit, so it fits on-hit builds much better than crit builds.
Is Wit’s End gold efficient?
On priced stats, it lands at 77%: 2,150 gold of value against a 2,800 gold price.
The two priced stats: 50% Attack Speed at 25 gold per percent is 1,250 gold, and 45 Magic Resist at 20 gold per point is 900. Tenacity is left out (no basic item sells it), and so is Fray. Honestly, against a team with two or more magic damage threats, the defensive half alone is worth the price, and the on-hit damage is a bonus on top.
What does it build from?
Two Recurve Bows (700 gold each) and a Negatron Cloak (850 gold), finished with 550 gold. Negatron Cloak first if you’re already losing trades to magic damage; a Recurve Bow first if you want more damage and Attack Speed in lane (each one also has a small on-hit passive of its own). It doesn’t build into anything.
What changed in recent patches?
Riot’s data has it from 2013, but two changes from the 2024 season define the version you buy today:
- Patch 14.1: cost 3,200 → 2,800 gold, Attack Speed 40% → 55%, Magic Resist 40 → 50.
- Patch 14.19: Attack Speed 55% → 50%, Magic Resist 50 → 45.
The 14.1 change was a big buff: 400 gold cheaper with more of both stats. The 14.19 trim took a little of that back. To be fair, today’s item is still much stronger per gold than the pre-2024 version, which cost 3,200 and gave noticeably less. Older rows in the table also show Attack Damage on earlier versions, which the item no longer has.
Who should buy Wit’s End?
On-hit fighters and marksmen facing a team with a lot of magic damage, especially mages or AP assassins who try to burst you. It’s a situational second or third item rather than a core one.
Who should skip it? Crit marksmen who need Attack Damage and crit chance from their item slots, and anyone facing a mostly physical damage team, where the Magic Resist goes to waste. Tanks who need pure Magic Resist get more from Spirit Visage or Kaenic Rookern. Look, the test is short: are you an attacker, and is the enemy’s damage mostly magic? Two yeses mean Wit’s End is probably your next buy.
