Negatron Cloak is the main Magic Resist component in League of Legends: 45 Magic Resist for 850 gold in patch 26.21, built from a Null-Magic Mantle, no passive. Five finished items use it, Force of Nature, Abyssal Mask, Kaenic Rookern, Jak’Sho the Protean and Wit’s End, so it is the piece a tank or fighter buys on the recall where the enemy mage starts to hurt.
What does Negatron Cloak do?
It gives 45 Magic Resist and nothing else. On a melee champion with around 40 base resist at mid levels, that roughly doubles the stat, and the share of magic damage you shrug off goes from about a quarter to well over a third.
That is a lot of mitigation for one component, and it lands at the moment it matters most: the enemy mage’s first item spike. A Syndra with Luden’s hitting a top laner with no Magic Resist is a one-combo kill; the same Syndra hitting a Negatron Cloak is a hard trade and a recall. Does it do anything against physical damage? Nothing at all, which is the standard warning with resist items, and the mistake still happens every day (buying a Cloak against a Zed because “the mid laner is fed” is a classic).
Is it worth the gold?
Slightly better than even: 106%. At the reference rate of 20 gold per point, set by Null-Magic Mantle, 45 Magic Resist is worth 900 gold against a price of 850 gold.
So the 450 gold combine on top of a Null-Magic Mantle buys its resist a touch cheaper than the Mantle does, which is why two Mantles are never the right call when a Cloak is affordable. The sell value is 595 gold. Thing is, the Cloak also holds most of the Magic Resist of every item it builds into, so finishing one of those is mostly about adding Health and a passive, not more resistance.
What does Negatron Cloak build into?
Five items, split by role:
- Tank items: Force of Nature, Kaenic Rookern and Abyssal Mask.
- Mixed resistance: Jak’Sho the Protean.
- Fighter and on-hit: Wit’s End.
In practice the choice is made by what the enemy mage does. Burst from a single caster points to Kaenic Rookern’s shield, sustained damage from several sources to Force of Nature’s stacking, a team that also has physical threats to Jak’Sho, and an auto-attacking champion who needs the resist to Wit’s End. All five, with current prices, are in the LoL items database.
Who buys it?
Tanks against AP damage, fighters against an AP laner, junglers facing an AP mid who roams, and on-hit champions building Wit’s End. Honestly, a Cloak is also the right emergency buy for almost any champion who is being one-shot by a mage, even a marksman or an assassin who will never finish it into anything, because 850 gold that stops a one-shot is cheap. Mages facing mages tend to prefer Verdant Barrier instead, since it brings Ability Power along.
How has Negatron Cloak changed over the patches?
Six times. The price has bounced between 720 and 900 gold the whole way:
- Patch 3.6: cost 810 → 720, Magic Resist 45 → 40.
- Patch 4.21: cost 720 → 850, Magic Resist 40 → 45.
- Patch 5.16 and 5.22: cost down to 800, then to 720 with 40 Magic Resist.
- Patch 10.23: cost 720 → 900, Magic Resist 40 → 50.
- Patch 14.19: trimmed to the current 850 gold and 45 Magic Resist.
Funny enough, after all that movement the item today is almost exactly where it stood in patch 4.21. The table above has every entry.
When should you buy it?
On the recall where the enemy’s main magic damage dealer has finished a component or two and you have 850 gold. Earlier against a lane bully like Kennen or Teemo, later if the mage is behind. Worth buying as a first item ever? Only against something extreme, say an AP jungler and an AP mid both ganking your lane, and even then boots and a Mantle usually come first. If you are still deciding which positions carry the team’s Magic Resist, the guide to LoL roles covers what tanks and junglers are expected to absorb, and Negatron Cloak is the first real step toward that job.
