Jak’Sho, The Protean is a 3,200 gold tank item in League of Legends that gives both resistances at once: 350 Health, 45 Armor and 45 Magic Resist in patch 26.21. Its Voidborn Resilience passive raises your bonus Armor and Magic Resist by 30% after 5 seconds of fighting champions, until the fight ends.

What does Voidborn Resilience do?

It rewards surviving the opening. Once you’ve been in combat with enemy champions for 5 seconds, your bonus Armor and bonus Magic Resist go up by 30%, and they stay up until combat ends.

Note the word bonus. It scales the resistances you get from items (and some other sources), not your champion’s base stats, so the more Armor and Magic Resist you’ve already built, the bigger the jump. On a tank who already owns Thornmail and Force of Nature, every bonus point from those items gets the 30% boost too. That adds up fast.

The first 5 seconds are the weak spot. Burst that lands before then doesn’t care about the passive.

Is Jak’Sho the Protean gold efficient?

Not on raw stats: 85%, meaning 2,733 gold of value for 3,200 gold.

The split is even across the board: 350 Health for 933 gold, 45 Armor for 900 and 45 Magic Resist for 900 (20 gold per point of each resistance). Honestly, the passive is the real value here. Count the extra 30% in a long fight and it looks far better.

Who should build it?

Tanks and frontline fighters facing mixed damage, say an Ability Power mid laner plus an Attack Damage marksman. Two jobs, one slot. An item that covers both resistances saves space in your build, and the passive makes it stronger the longer you stay in. Is the enemy damage almost all one type? Then a dedicated item like Thornmail or Force of Nature usually does more.

Thing is, it suits engage tanks best. They start fights, take the first wave of damage and then sit in the middle of the enemy team, which is exactly when the passive is up. In practice, it’s often a second or third item once you know the enemy has a balanced damage mix (and that’s most teams).

What does it build from?

Giant’s Belt (900 gold), Chain Vest (800 gold) and Negatron Cloak (850 gold), with a 650 gold combine. Buy the resistance piece that matches your lane opponent first: Chain Vest against physical damage, Negatron Cloak against magic. Nothing builds out of the finished item.

How has Jak’Sho the Protean changed?

Riot’s files start it at patch 12.22, and three changes followed:

  • Patch 13.1: cost 3,000 → 3,200 gold, effect text changed.
  • Patch 14.1: Armor 30 → 50, Magic Resist 30 → 50, Health 400 → 300.
  • Patch 14.19: Armor 50 → 45, Magic Resist 50 → 45, Health 300 → 350.

So 14.1 turned it from a Health item into a resistance item, and 14.19 nudged it back a little. Funny enough, the cost hasn’t moved since 13.1. The table above has every entry, and our LoL items database covers the other tank items too.

When is it the right buy?

When the enemy damage is mixed and you’re the one who starts fights and stays past the 5 second mark. Not sure if your champion fits that frontline job? Our guide to LoL roles explains what tanks do, and for engage tanks against mixed teams Jak’Sho, The Protean is one of the most common picks.
