Jayce Counters: Who Beats Jayce
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Jayce counters are top laners who shrug off Shock Blast poke or punish him when he leaps in with the hammer. He’s a 125-range fighter in Hammer Stance who swaps to a ranged cannon whenever he wants, so his lane is long-range physical poke followed by a leap, a knockback and a stance swap back out.
Each of the five earned its place on kit interactions, checked against his patch 26.21 ability text. There’s no win-rate table behind any of it.

Why is Jayce hard to counter?
- Hextech Capacitor (passive): swapping weapons gives him Move Speed for a short time.
- To the Skies! / Shock Blast (Q): the hammer leaps to an enemy for physical damage and a slow; the cannon fires an electric orb that detonates on the first enemy or at the end of its path, damaging everyone caught. Cooldown 16/14/12/10/8/6.
- Lightning Field / Hyper Charge (W): the hammer restores Mana per strike and can create a damaging field around him; the cannon pushes his Attack Speed to maximum for several attacks. Cooldown 10.
- Thundering Blow / Acceleration Gate (E): the hammer deals magic damage and knocks an enemy back a short distance; the cannon deploys a gate that speeds up allied champions, and a Shock Blast fired through it gains speed, range and damage. Cooldown 20/18/16/14/12/10.
- Mercury Cannon / Mercury Hammer (R): swaps stance. Switching to the cannon makes the next attack cut Armor and Magic Resist; switching to the hammer adds Armor, Magic Resist and bonus magic damage on the first attack. Cooldown 6.
Jayce has six abilities and a swap that’s available every 6 seconds, and his lane plan is simple to describe. Poke with Shock Blast through the gate, then leap in with To the Skies! when you’re low, hit Thundering Blow, swap back out. Where’s the weakness? Most of that damage is physical, and the poke comes from a single orb that stops at the first enemy. Anyone with Armor scaling, strong regeneration or a way to block projectiles turns the long-range half of his kit into a waste of Mana. And once he leaps in? His only way out is the swap’s Move Speed (no second dash anywhere).
Which champions are the best Jayce counters?
Malphite
Granite Shield (passive) absorbs damage up to a tenth of Malphite’s maximum Health and recharges whenever he goes a few seconds without being hit. Shock Blast poke is spaced out by its cooldown, so it often lands on a fresh shield. Ground Slam (E) scales its magic damage with Armor, which is the stat you’d build anyway against a physical champion, and it reduces the Attack Speed of enemies hit, which takes the edge off Hyper Charge. Seismic Shard (Q) steals Move Speed for 3 seconds, cancelling out Hextech Capacitor, and Unstoppable Force (R) knocks him into the air from range when he finally leaps in.
Dr. Mundo
Significantly increased Health regeneration comes built into Goes Where He Pleases (passive), and poke only works if the target stays damaged. Mundo doesn’t. Infected Bonesaw (Q) deals damage based on current Health and slows the first enemy hit, Heart Zapper (W) stores part of the damage he takes and heals some of it back with a burst, and Maximum Dosage (R) instantly heals a percent of his missing Health before regenerating more over a long duration. Blunt Force Trauma (E) grows his Attack Damage with his maximum Health. Thing is, Jayce can still out-trade him early. He just can’t make the trades stick.
Poppy
Activating Steadfast Presence (W) stops enemy dashes around Poppy, slowing and grounding whoever she stops. To the Skies! is how hammer Jayce gets into melee range, a leap to an enemy, and Riot’s text for Poppy covers dashes in general. Test the interaction in a practice game if you want to be sure (it’s quick). Heroic Charge (E) pushes him into a wall for a stun, Hammer Shock (Q) leaves a slowing zone that explodes, and the passive Armor from Steadfast Presence rises when she’s low on Health, which is exactly when Jayce goes for the hammer combo.
Yasuo
Wind Wall (W) blocks enemy projectiles for 4 seconds, and the description of Acceleration Gate literally calls Shock Blast a missile. So the gate-boosted orb, his best poke, can hit a wall of wind instead of Yasuo. Steel Tempest (Q) knocks Airborne at 2 stacks, Sweeping Blade (E) dashes through a target, and Last Breath (R) blinks onto an Airborne champion and holds them there. Moving fills up his passive shield. Handy. To be fair, Wind Wall is a long cooldown, so Yasuo has to save it for the gate shots.
Gnar
Boomerang Throw (Q) damages and slows enemies on the way out and back, and catching it lowers the cooldown, so mini Gnar can poke back at 175 attack range with a projectile of his own. Hop (E) leaps to a location and bounces off any unit for extra distance, which dodges a Shock Blast if timed. The real threat is Mega Gnar: Wallop (W) stuns an area in front of him, and GNAR! (R) throws enemies in a chosen direction, stunning those who hit a wall. A hammer Jayce who leaps onto a full-Rage Gnar near a wall is in trouble. Honestly, it’s a lane about Rage timing more than anything.
How do you play the lane against Jayce?
- Stand where minions cover you. Shock Blast detonates on hitting an enemy, so a minion in the way takes the orb instead.
- Watch the Acceleration Gate. A Shock Blast fired through it gains speed, range and damage, so the gate tells you a big shot is coming.
- Punish the leap. To the Skies! commits him to melee, and after Thundering Blow his exit is only the stance swap’s Move Speed.
- Count the knockback. Thundering Blow is a 20 second cooldown at rank 1, and without it hammer Jayce can’t push you off.
- Don’t fight inside Lightning Field. It damages nearby enemies for several seconds; step out and trade after it ends.
Which items counter Jayce?
Armor first, since Shock Blast and To the Skies! both deal physical damage. Plated Steelcaps give 25 Armor and trim damage from attacks by 10%, which helps against Hyper Charge’s maximum Attack Speed strings. Frozen Heart adds 75 Armor and cuts the Attack Speed of nearby champions by 20%, another answer to Hyper Charge. Dead Man’s Plate gives 350 Health and 55 Armor, and Unsinkable reduces the effectiveness of slows by 15%, useful against To the Skies! and its slow. Randuin’s Omen brings 75 Armor plus an active slow (nice when he lands). Damage dealers can buy Death’s Dance, which spreads part of a burst combo over 3 seconds. Thundering Blow and the hammer’s first attack are magic damage, so a single Magic Resist component doesn’t hurt either. Compare them all in our items database.
When is Jayce at his weakest?
When he’s in hammer form with Thundering Blow down. He leaped in to win the trade, the knockback is on a 20 second cooldown at rank 1, and his only escape is swapping to the cannon for a burst of Move Speed. That’s a 125-range melee champion, briefly, without his peel. In practice, this is when Malphite, Poppy and Gnar want him.
He’s also weaker as fights get longer. Jayce trades in short bursts (poke, leap, combo, swap out), so tanks with regeneration or recharging shields reset faster than he can chip them down. Long story short, survive the poke, then fight him on your terms.

FAQ
Who counters Jayce the most?
Top laners who shrug off poke or punish his leap: Malphite, Dr. Mundo, Poppy, Yasuo and Gnar.
Can Yasuo’s Wind Wall block Shock Blast?
Wind Wall blocks enemy projectiles for 4 seconds, and Riot’s description of Acceleration Gate calls Shock Blast a missile, so it can be blocked.
What is Jayce’s knockback cooldown?
Thundering Blow, his hammer E, has a cooldown of 20/18/16/14/12/10 seconds by rank. It deals magic damage and knocks an enemy back a short distance.
Should you build Armor against Jayce?
Yes. Shock Blast and To the Skies! both deal physical damage. Thundering Blow and the hammer’s first attack after swapping deal magic damage, so a little Magic Resist also helps.
How were these counters chosen?
Kit against kit. Every Jayce ability for patch 26.21 was set beside each candidate’s abilities, and no match statistics went into the list.
