Essence Reaver is a 3,050 gold crit item in League of Legends for Attack Damage champions who cast a lot: 50 Attack Damage, 20 Ability Haste and 25% Critical Strike Chance in patch 26.21. Its Spellblade passive makes your next attack after an ability deal bonus physical damage and restore Mana on hit.

What does Essence Reaver do?

It fixes Mana problems for champions who mix abilities and auto attacks. Cast a spell, hit something, and you get Mana back along with extra damage. Repeat.

That loop is why it shows up on marksmen and fighters with expensive spells. Without it, a champion who spams abilities runs dry after a couple of fights and has to recall; with it, every ability-then-attack combo refunds part of the cost (the exact refund and damage are in the client tooltip, since Riot’s data text leaves the numbers out). Spellblade is the same effect family as Sheen, so it doesn’t stack with other Spellblade items.

The crit chance and Ability Haste do the rest, turning a Mana fix into a real damage item for the middle of the game. Damage item or utility item? Both, honestly, which is exactly why it’s hard to replace.

Is it gold efficient?

Very, at 123%. The three stats are worth 3,750 gold, well above the 3,050 gold price.

Attack Damage brings 1,750 gold of that (50 points at 35 each), Ability Haste adds 1,000 gold, and the crit chance another 1,000 gold. Few crit items carry Ability Haste at all. For what it’s worth, the passive comes free on top of that.

What does it build from?

Sheen (900 gold), Caulfield’s Warhammer (1,050) and Cloak of Agility (600), with a 500 gold combine. Sheen gives the Spellblade passive early. That same Sheen goes into Trinity Force too, so you only pick one Spellblade item per build. Nothing upgrades from the finished Reaver.

How has it changed over the patches?

It first shows up in Riot’s data in patch 4.10, and 2024 alone brought half a dozen changes to it. The main ones since then:

  • Patch 14.10: cost 2,900 → 3,200 gold, Attack Damage 60 → 65, Ability Haste 20 → 25, crit chance 20% → 25%.
  • Patch 14.20: cost 3,150 → 2,900 gold, Ability Haste 20 → 15, Attack Damage 65 → 60.
  • 26.1 moved Ability Haste back up to 20 and Attack Damage down to 55.
  • Patch 26.2: cost 2,900 → 3,050 gold, Attack Damage 55 → 50.

Riot clearly struggles to settle this one. Patches 26.1 and 26.2 landed back to back and both took damage away, while Ability Haste went up. The full list is in the table above (eleven stat or cost changes since 11.7), and our LoL items database covers every other crit item.

Who should build Essence Reaver?

Attack Damage champions who rely on abilities and suffer from Mana costs. Some marksmen who weave spells between autos, and a few fighters or skirmishers with crit scaling. Look at your Mana bar after the first fight. Empty? That’s your sign.

Champions with no Mana, or who rarely cast, waste the passive. In practice, crit marksmen who mostly auto attack prefer items with more raw damage or Attack Speed. Our guide to LoL roles covers the carry positions; for spell-heavy marksmen there, Essence Reaver is usually the first or second item.
