Cloak of Agility is the crit chance component in League of Legends: 15% Critical Strike Chance for 600 gold in patch 26.21, with no passive and no other stat. It is a basic item with nothing below it, and seven finished items build out of it, including Infinity Edge, Essence Reaver, Mortal Reminder and The Collector.

What does Cloak of Agility do?

It gives crit chance and only crit chance. Nothing else. Each basic attack has a 15% chance to critically strike, which by default means it deals bonus damage on top of the normal hit (the exact multiplier depends on your other items, Infinity Edge raises it).

On its own, 15% is a strange stat to hold. Roughly one attack in seven crits, which makes your lane trades swingy rather than stronger, and a marksman holding a lone Cloak at minute eight is hoping for luck more than planning damage. So why buy it early at all? Because the finished items need it, and because crit chance stacks: two crit items get you to half your attacks, three to most of them, and that is where crit marksmen start to feel the build come together.

Is it worth the gold?

Exactly even, by design. It is the item our efficiency numbers use as the reference price for crit chance, 40 gold per 1%, so 15% comes out at 600 gold and the item sits at 100%.

The sell price is 420 gold, the usual 70% return, so there is no penalty for holding one through a long recall cycle (plenty of marksmen carry one for ten minutes while saving for Infinity Edge). In practice the question is never whether the Cloak is efficient. Efficient for whom? It is whether crit is the right stat for your champion at all, and for anyone who does not plan to finish at least two crit items, the honest answer is no.

What does Cloak of Agility build into?

Seven items, all for champions who attack:

Thing is, that list is the whole crit tree. Every crit item in the game either contains a Cloak or contains a component that does, so buying one on the first recall commits you to nothing specific while keeping every crit build open. The LoL items database has all seven with current prices and the full paths beneath them.

Who buys it?

Marksmen, mostly: Jinx, Caitlyn, Ashe, Jhin, Aphelios, Xayah and the rest of the crit carries. A handful of melee champions join them, Yasuo, Yone, Tryndamere and Gangplank, since their kits scale with crit chance as well. Nobody else should, and honestly a Cloak in a mage or tank inventory is a sign something went wrong in the shop.

How has it changed over the patches?

Four times, and the crit chance has bounced up and down along the way. Riot’s data has it at 730 gold from 2013 or earlier with the same crit chance it has now, raised to 800 gold and 20% in patch 5.22, bumped to 25% in 9.23, cut back to 20% in 10.2, and finally set at 600 gold with 15% in patch 10.23, where it has stayed. Funny enough, that means the current Cloak gives the same crit chance it did twelve years ago, just cheaper.

When should you buy it?

When the next crit item in your build is more than a recall away and you have 600 gold with nothing better to spend it on. A marksman who recalls with 1,300 gold should take B. F. Sword first; one with 600 or 700 takes the Cloak. For what it’s worth, the order rarely matters much by the time the finished item lands, so don’t overthink it. If you are still working out whether a crit-based carry suits you, the guide to LoL roles covers what marksmen are built to do, and Cloak of Agility is where most of their builds begin.
