Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 2225 ÷ 3000 = 74%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Armor Penetration (no basic item sells this stat alone).

Mortal Reminder is a 3,000 gold crit item in League of Legends that answers healing and Armor at the same time: 35 Attack Damage, 30% Armor Penetration and 25% Critical Strike Chance in patch 26.21. Its passive applies 40% Wounds to enemy champions you hit with physical damage, cutting their healing for 3 seconds.

What does the Grievous Wounds passive do?

Any physical damage you deal to an enemy champion applies Wounds, which reduce the healing they receive by 40% for 3 seconds. Basic attacks count, and so do physical damage abilities.

That matters against champions who heal themselves through a fight, and against teams with an enchanter support keeping the frontline topped up. Since a marksman attacks constantly, the Wounds stay up on whoever you’re hitting almost without thinking about it (which is the main advantage over buying a cheap healing-reduction component and hoping you remember to apply it).

What does percent Armor Penetration add?

It ignores 30% of the target’s Armor when your physical damage lands. Unlike flat penetration, a percentage scales with how much Armor the enemy has, so it does the most against tanks and bruisers who stacked Armor.

Put simply, the item is a two-in-one answer to durable frontliners: the Wounds stop them healing, and the penetration lets your damage through their resistances.

Is Mortal Reminder worth the gold?

The table says 74%, but that’s incomplete. Only Attack Damage and crit chance get priced: 35 Attack Damage at 35 gold per point is 1,225 gold, and 25% crit at 40 gold per percent is 1,000, so 2,225 gold against a 3,000 gold cost.

Armor Penetration has no basic item to compare against, so the formula skips it, and the Wounds passive isn’t counted either. Honestly, against a team with two Armor-stacking tanks and a healer, that skipped part is worth more than the priced stats. Against a team of squishy mages? Much less.

Which items go into it?

Three: Executioner’s Calling (800 gold), Last Whisper (1,450 gold) and Cloak of Agility (600 gold). The combine is only 150 gold, so the last component basically completes the item. Executioner’s Calling first if the enemy healing is already a problem (it carries its own Grievous Wounds), Last Whisper first if Armor is the bigger issue.

It’s a finished item.

How has the item changed over time?

A lot. Riot’s data first lists it in patch 5.22, and in patch 13.3 it became the crit and Armor Penetration item it is now, swapping out Attack Speed and Move Speed. Since then the numbers have see-sawed:

  • Patch 14.6: Armor Penetration 30% → 35%.
  • Patch 14.19: cost 3,000 → 3,200 gold, Armor Penetration 35% → 30%.
  • Patch 25.S1.2: cost 3,200 → 3,300 gold, Armor Penetration 30% → 35%.
  • Patch 26.1: cost 3,300 → 3,000 gold, Armor Penetration 35% → 30%.

The penetration number has moved between 30% and 35% four times. To be fair, that’s typical for an item Riot uses to balance the whole anti-tank toolkit, and it’s why the version in old videos may not match the one you buy today. Our LoL items database keeps the full log for the other marksman items too.

Who should buy Mortal Reminder?

Crit marksmen and AD carries facing healing, tanks, or both. It’s usually a situational buy around the third or fourth item, once you can see what the enemy team has built (the scoreboard shows every item they own, so check it while you’re dead).

No healing and no Armor-heavy champions on the enemy side? Skip it. Look, the passive is only worth paying for when there’s healing to cut. If you’re still learning how the marksman role adapts to enemy comps, our overview of LoL positions is a good starting point, and against a healing tank, Mortal Reminder is the item that makes the fight winnable.
