Nami Counters: Who Beats Nami
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Nami counters are picks that eat her projectile CC, punish the fact she has zero mobility, and gut her healing before it matters. Aqua Prison stuns, Ebb and Flow keeps her lane alive, Tidecaller’s Blessing turns her carry’s autos into a problem, and Tidal Wave knocks up, slows and damages whole teams, so the best counters either tank all of that or just kill her before any of it comes out.
We chose every champion here by hand, judging each on how its kit lines up against what Nami’s abilities do. Honestly, we don’t use win-rate data or pick-rate stats, so treat this as a matchup breakdown, not a tier list.

Why is Nami hard to counter?
550 range, no dash, but a kit that covers healing, peel, engage, and ally buffing. Look at what she actually brings to a lane:
- Surging Tides (passive): abilities that hit allies grant them bonus Move Speed, making them harder to pin down after every trade.
- Aqua Prison (Q): sends a bubble to a target area that stuns all enemies on impact. Cooldown starts at 12 seconds.
- Ebb and Flow (W): bounces between allies and enemies, healing allies and damaging enemies with each bounce.
- Tidecaller’s Blessing (E): empowers an ally’s basic attacks and spells with bonus magic damage and a slow.
- Tidal Wave (R): a massive wave that knocks up, slows, and damages enemies. Allies hit gain double the passive’s Move Speed bonus.
Her weakness is Aqua Prison. Miss it and she loses her primary hard CC for up to 12 seconds, with only Tidal Wave left as a fallback. Every nami counter on this list builds around that window.
Which champions are the best Nami counters?
Braum
Unbreakable (E) intercepts all projectiles and destroys them. The shield can catch Aqua Prison’s bubble, and it negates the damage of the first attack it catches completely. In practice, a Braum standing in front of his carry forces Nami to test whether the shield is active before committing cooldowns.
Morgana
Black Shield (E) absorbs magic damage and blocks disabling effects until it breaks. Both Aqua Prison’s stun and Tidal Wave’s knock-up count as disabling effects, so one good shield timing and your carry walks right through them. Morgana also brings Dark Binding (Q), which roots Nami in place, and without a dash, she eats it.
Blitzcrank
Rocket Grab (Q) pulls Nami out of position. She can’t dash away. Power Fist (E) pops her into the air, and Static Field (R) silences nearby enemies, stopping her from casting Ebb and Flow to heal through the burst. That silence lands exactly when she most needs Ebb and Flow.
Nautilus
Depth Charge (R) locks onto its target, so Nami can’t sidestep it, and she has no mobility to outrun it. The shockwave chases its target and knocks up everyone in the path, setting up Dredge Line (Q) and Staggering Blow (passive root on first attack). That CC chain gives your team a long window to focus her down.
Alistar
The moment Alistar casts Unbreakable Will (R), he strips away every crowd control effect currently on him. Aqua Prison stun? Cleansed. Tidal Wave knock-up is also cleansed, so Alistar walks through Nami’s strongest abilities and still reaches the backline with Headbutt (W) to knock a target back and Pulverize (Q) to toss nearby enemies into the air. His ult removes Nami’s CC the moment he casts it, and he takes reduced physical and magical damage for its duration.
How do you play the lane against Nami?
Don’t have one of the five nami counters above? These patterns still help.
- Sidestep, don’t retreat. Aqua Prison is aimed where you’re walking. Move perpendicular to the cast direction instead of backing up in a straight line.
- 12-second Q cooldown at rank one. After she misses Aqua Prison, her only remaining hard CC is Tidal Wave, and she has no way out for a long window. That’s when you go in.
- Spread in lane. Ebb and Flow bounces between allies and enemies. Fewer nearby targets means fewer bounces, less healing, less damage.
- Respect Tidecaller’s Blessing. When Nami casts E on her carry, their autos deal bonus magic damage and slow you. Back off until it expires rather than trading into empowered attacks.
Trading into empowered autos or standing still for bubbles is how Nami punishes mistakes. Long story short, keep your spacing and she’s stuck throwing Q into nothing.
Which items counter Nami?
Put simply, Magic Resist and Grievous Wounds. That’s the whole answer.
Mercury’s Treads give 20 Magic Resist and 30% Tenacity. For healing reduction, Executioner’s Calling costs 800 gold and applies 40% Grievous Wounds on physical damage (cheap enough to pick up on first back). Mages can grab Oblivion Orb for the same Wounds effect. If you want a bigger defensive item, Kaenic Rookern provides 400 Health, 80 Magic Resist, and a magic damage shield after 15 seconds without taking magic damage. Force of Nature stacks to 70 bonus Magic Resist after 8 instances of magic damage from champions. Full stats for all of these are in our LoL items database.
When is Nami easiest to counter?
Early, while Aqua Prison is still at rank one. Its cooldown sits at its longest (12 seconds), and she has no escape if caught.
After laning, her weak moment is right after Aqua Prison misses in a teamfight. The bubble is her main peel tool besides Tidal Wave (which starts at a 120-second cooldown), so a fight that opens while Q is down forces her to burn her ultimate or rely on Ebb and Flow and Tidecaller’s Blessing’s slow. The catch is, her cooldowns do shorten with rank (Aqua Prison drops to 8 seconds, Tidal Wave to 100 seconds), but the nami counters on this page still exploit those same cooldown gaps. Skins and full stats are on the Nami champion page, and ARAM players can read the Nami ARAM build.
FAQ
Who counters Nami the hardest?
Of the five nami counters, Braum is the hardest because Unbreakable (E) intercepts projectiles, letting him catch Aqua Prison’s bubble before it reaches his carry. Morgana’s Black Shield is next, since it stops both Aqua Prison and Tidal Wave from CCing whoever she shields.
Can you dodge Nami’s bubble?
Aqua Prison travels to a target area and stuns on impact. Because it is aimed at a spot rather than at you, sidestepping perpendicular to the cast direction is more reliable than retreating in a straight line.
What items reduce Nami’s healing?
Executioner’s Calling and Mortal Reminder apply 40% Grievous Wounds on physical damage. Oblivion Orb and Morellonomicon apply the same for magic damage. For a passive option, Bramble Vest inflicts Wounds on any attacker who lands a hit on you.
How do you stop Nami’s ultimate?
Spread out to limit how many teammates are hit. Mercury’s Treads provide Magic Resist and Tenacity, and a Banshee’s Veil or Edge of Night spell shield absorbs it entirely.
Is this list based on win rates?
No. These nami counters are editorial picks based on ability interactions in patch 26.21. Our champion guides use the same approach for other matchups.
