Caitlyn Counters: Who Beats Caitlyn

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Caitlyn counters are bot laners who dodge her attacks or get on top of her before her range takes over. She has 650 attack range, traps that immobilize, a net that knocks her backward and a long-range execute on R, so champions with dashes, attack dodges or a spell shield give her the most trouble.

We chose five picks by comparing kits directly, ability by ability, the way you’d explain the matchup to a friend sitting next to you. Win rates weren’t part of it.

Why is Caitlyn hard to counter?

  • Headshot (passive): every few attacks, or against a target she has trapped or netted, she fires a Headshot for bonus damage that scales with critical strike chance. On trapped or netted targets its range doubles.
  • Piltover Peacemaker (Q): a one-second wind-up, then a piercing shot that deals less damage to each target after the first. Cooldown 10 down to 6.
  • Yordle Snap Trap (W): a trap that reveals and immobilizes an enemy champion for 1.5 seconds and sets up an empowered Headshot.
  • 90 Caliber Net (E): a net that slows the target, while the recoil knocks Caitlyn back. Cooldown 16 down to 8.
  • Ace in the Hole (R): after lining up, she fires one huge shot at a single target from far away. Another enemy champion can step in front of it. Cooldown 90.

Caitlyn wins lanes by never letting you walk forward. Her 650 range is longer than any of the five picks below start with, traps cover the space in front of her, and the net is both a slow on you and an escape for her. Where does that leave her opponent? Waiting for the net (annoying, but it works). Once E is spent, she has no other way to create distance, and a champion who reaches her then is fighting a marksman with nothing left to run with.

Which champions are the best Caitlyn counters?

Nilah

Jubilant Veil (W) lets Nilah dodge all incoming attacks for its duration, and Caitlyn’s lane pressure is mostly attacks and Headshots. Slipstream (E) then dashes her to a target, and Apotheosis (R) damages everyone around her and pulls them in. The catch is her 225 range. She has to commit, and a well-placed trap punishes a bad dash.

Samira

Blade Whirl (W) slashes around Samira and destroys enemy missiles, which covers Caitlyn’s basic attacks while it’s up. Wild Rush (E) dashes through an enemy, and her Daredevil Impulse passive dashes her into attack range against anyone immobilized, so if her support lands crowd control, Samira gets the engage for free. Short trades, high risk. That’s the matchup.

Sivir

Spell Shield (E) blocks one enemy ability cast on Sivir, restoring Health and adding Move Speed when it does. Ace in the Hole is a single-target ability. So is 90 Caliber Net when it’s aimed at her. Ricochet (W) bounces her attacks to nearby targets, which clears the wave quickly when Caitlyn tries to push, and On The Hunt (R) speeds up her whole team for a fight.

Ezreal

Ezreal doesn’t try to out-trade Caitlyn with auto attacks. Mystic Shot (Q) pokes and lowers all his cooldowns when it hits, and Arcane Shift (E) teleports him, which is a clean way out of a trap angle or into range for a finishing hit. Trueshot Barrage (R) hits everything in its path, so a low Caitlyn hiding behind minions isn’t safe either (minions take reduced damage, but she doesn’t).

Tristana

Tristana’s range grows with her level through Draw a Bead, and Rocket Jump (W) propels her a long way, slowing everything where she lands. Explosive Charge (E) bombs a target, and Buster Shot (R) knocks that target back. Put simply, she can jump onto Caitlyn after the net is used, and knock her away from her own team if the fight turns.

How do you play the lane against Caitlyn?

  • Walk around traps, not through them. A trapped champion is immobilized for 1.5 seconds and takes an empowered Headshot.
  • Don’t stand in a line with your minions when she charges Piltover Peacemaker. The one-second wind-up is your cue to step sideways.
  • Wait for the net. 90 Caliber Net is her escape; at 16 seconds on rank 1, that’s a long window.
  • Watch her attack count. Headshot comes up every few attacks, so take short trades rather than long ones.
  • When she channels Ace in the Hole, an ally can block the bullet by standing in front of you.

Which items counter Caitlyn?

Her damage is physical and Headshot scales with critical strike chance, so Armor and crit reduction work. Randuin’s Omen is the big one. It gives 75 Armor and makes you receive 30% less damage from critical strikes. Boots matter too: Plating on Plated Steelcaps takes 10% off every basic attack she lands on you. For the traps and net, Quicksilver Sash removes crowd control (except Airborne) for 1,300 gold, and Mercurial Scimitar does the same with 50 Attack Damage attached. Edge of Night and Banshee’s Veil carry a spell shield that can stop Ace in the Hole. Every one of these is in our items database, and if you’re building crit to answer her, Infinity Edge shows the full breakdown.

When is Caitlyn at her weakest?

Right after she uses the net (her only escape). Honestly, that’s the whole plan. Without 90 Caliber Net she has no way to get space, and her traps take time to set.

The second window is when her traps are down or already triggered. Yordle Snap Trap needs to be placed ahead of time, and in a fast fight she won’t have them where you’re going.

In practice, every one of these Caitlyn counters plays the same game: dodge the first few shots, wait out the net, then get close.
