Caitlyn ARAM Build and Guide
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.
A Caitlyn ARAM build is a crit build that stretches her range even further: Infinity Edge, Rapid Firecannon, Lord Dominik’s Regards and Bloodthirster. In ARAM she deals 100% damage and takes 105% damage. Same output, slightly thinner armor (so to speak).
We read each item’s current text against her kit and skipped win-rate sites entirely.

How is Caitlyn changed in ARAM?
| Howling Abyss modifier | Value |
|---|---|
| Damage dealt | 100% |
| Damage taken | 105% |
Her damage is exactly what it is on the Rift. Only the defensive side moves: a 1,000-damage dive on her lands as 1,050. Look, her whole plan is to stand at 650 range where nobody reaches her, and while that plan works, the extra 5% barely matters. When it doesn’t? Then it’s one more reason she dies.
Why does Caitlyn’s kit suit one lane?
Range and traps both get better when the enemy can only come from one direction. Her kit, per Riot’s patch 26.21 data:
- Headshot (passive): every few attacks, or on a target she has trapped or netted, an extra-damage shot that scales with crit chance, at double range against trapped or netted targets.
- Piltover Peacemaker (Q): a one-second charge, then a piercing shot that loses damage on each target after the first.
- Yordle Snap Trap (W) immobilizes and reveals an enemy champion for 1.5 seconds and readies an empowered Headshot.
- 90 Caliber Net (E): slows the target and knocks Caitlyn backward. Cooldown 16 at rank 1, 8 at rank 5.
- Ace in the Hole (R): a long-range single-target shot that an enemy champion can body-block for an ally. Cooldown 90.
On the Howling Abyss there are no side lanes and no jungle paths, so every enemy walks the same strip toward her. Traps placed in that strip are hard to avoid (that’s the whole trick). Piltover Peacemaker lines up through a clumped team more easily too, even if each target after the first takes less. The weak point is the same as always: she has one escape, the net, and at 105% damage taken a caught Caitlyn goes down fast.
What should a Caitlyn ARAM build focus on?
Crit and range first, then a way to survive the dive that eventually comes. Four items do it.
Infinity Edge is the core: 75 Attack Damage, 25% Critical Strike Chance and 30% Critical Strike Damage. Headshot scales with critical strike chance, so this item feeds her passive as well as her normal attacks.
Rapid Firecannon adds 35% Attack Speed, 25% Critical Strike Chance and 4% Move Speed. Its Sharpshooter passive gives her Energized Attack 35% bonus Attack Range and 40 bonus magic damage. On a champion who already starts at 650 range, that’s a lot of free poke at enemies who think they’re safe.
Third, Lord Dominik’s Regards: 35 Attack Damage, 35% Armor Penetration and 25% Critical Strike Chance. Its Giant Slayer passive deals up to 15% bonus damage to champions with bonus Health, so any tank on the random enemy team turns it into a damage item.
Finish with Bloodthirster for 80 Attack Damage and 15% Life Steal. Ichorshield turns extra healing from Life Steal into a shield, and since you can’t go home to heal, that sustain keeps her in the fight longer. Honestly, it’s the item that keeps a good game from ending early.
How do you play Caitlyn on the Howling Abyss?
- Trap the lane ahead of the fight. Snap Trap has a tiny cooldown, so keep several down where enemies will walk.
- Follow every trap with an attack. A trapped target gives an empowered Headshot at double range.
- Keep the net for the dive. It’s your only escape, and it slows the champion chasing you.
- Charge Piltover Peacemaker through a group. The first target takes the most damage, so aim the line at whoever’s lowest.
- Save Ace in the Hole for a low target their tanks can’t cover.
Shopping, relics and Mark on Caitlyn
Caitlyn can’t recall in ARAM. She spends gold at the fountain at the start and on each respawn, so decide the next item before a dive finds her. Relics placed along the lane are her only healing outside Bloodthirster, and a marksman at 105% damage taken will want every one of them she can reach safely.
The mode’s snowball spell, Mark, gives a dash to whatever it hits. On a champion built around distance, that dash is mostly for finishing a fleeing target, not for starting anything. Summoner spells lock on the loading screen, so pick for survival. To be fair, a dash onto a fleeing low-health target is still a dash she wouldn’t otherwise have.
Is Caitlyn good in ARAM?
Yes. Riot left her damage dealt at 100%, the extra 5% damage taken is small, and one lane makes her traps and range work harder than they do on the Rift. She pokes from further away than almost anyone wants to walk.
What kills her? Divers and hooks, anything that reaches her once she has used the net. For bot lane matchups on the Rift, see the Caitlyn counters guide (same idea, different map). If bot lane roles are new to you, the guide to LoL roles covers marksmen, and her cosmetics are all on the Caitlyn skins page.
Long story short, a Caitlyn ARAM game is about patience. Trap, poke, wait for someone to step wrong, and keep the net for the moment they finally get through.
FAQ
Is she nerfed on the Howling Abyss?
Slightly. Only on defense. Per the wiki’s ARAM table she sits at 100% damage dealt and 105% damage taken.
What items should Caitlyn build in ARAM?
Infinity Edge, Rapid Firecannon, Lord Dominik’s Regards and Bloodthirster: crit, extra range, armor penetration and sustain.
Why build Rapid Firecannon on her?
Its Sharpshooter passive gives her Energized Attack 35% bonus Attack Range, which adds to her 650 base range for long-range poke.
Do her traps work well in one lane?
Yes. Enemies can only approach through one lane, and a trapped champion is immobilized for 1.5 seconds and takes an empowered Headshot.
Is this build based on win rates?
No. We picked Caitlyn’s items from their patch 26.21 effects and her kit. We don’t use win-rate data.
