Galio Counters: Who Beats Galio
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Galio counters are champions who beat him at range or with physical damage before he can taunt and knock them up. He’s a tank-mage with 150 attack range, a tornado on Q, a taunt on W, a knock-up dash on E and a global-style landing on R that shields allies, so ranged mages and AD assassins with mobility trouble him most.
We built this list from ability text, kit against kit. No win-rate tables, no tier lists.

Why is Galio hard to counter?
- Colossal Smash (passive): every few seconds his next basic attack deals bonus magic damage in an area.
- Winds of War (Q): two windblasts that merge into a large tornado dealing damage over time. Cooldown 11 down to 7 seconds.
- Shield of Durand (W): he charges a defensive stance while moving slowly, then releases it to taunt and damage nearby enemies.
- Justice Punch (E): a short step back, then a charge that knocks up the first enemy champion he meets. Cooldown 11 down to 7.
- Hero’s Entrance (R): he picks an ally’s position, shields every ally there with a magic shield, then lands and knocks up nearby enemies. Cooldown 180/160/140.
Galio is a fight starter. In lane he pokes with Q and waits, and once Justice Punch or the taunt connects, his team follows up. His ultimate is the part that changes games, since it lets him join a fight anywhere an ally is standing. So what does he lack? Range, mostly. At 150 attack range and with a charge-up taunt that slows him while he holds it, he has to get close, and anyone who hits hard from distance makes that walk expensive.
Which champions are the best Galio counters?
Xerath
Xerath fights from a range Galio can’t touch in lane. Arcanopulse (Q) is a long-range beam, Eye of Destruction (W) slows everyone in its area, and Shocking Orb (E) stuns one target, which is a clean answer to a Galio winding up Justice Punch. If he commits with Hero’s Entrance to save a teammate, Rite of the Arcane gives Xerath long-range barrages to punish the landing spot.
Azir
Azir lets his Sand Soldiers do the hitting. Arise! (W) summons a soldier that attacks for him, so he can trade without ever standing in taunt range. Conquering Sands (Q) slows for a second. Emperor’s Divide (R) is a wall of soldiers that knocks enemies back (and a Galio knocked back is a Galio who isn’t punching anyone). Shifting Sands (E) adds a shield and a dash to a soldier when he needs to leave.
Talon
Talon deals physical damage, and he moves around the map faster than Galio wants. Assassin’s Path (E) vaults him over terrain on a low cooldown, so he can follow a Galio who roams, or simply roam first. Rake (W) slows with its returning blades, and three spell hits set up Blade’s End, a heavy bleed. Thing is, Galio wants to be where the fight is, and with a low-cooldown vault Talon can often get there first.
Akshan
Akshan has 500 range against Galio’s 150. Avengerang (Q) hits going out and coming back, Dirty Fighting adds bonus damage and a shield every third hit on a champion, and Heroic Swing (E) swings him around terrain while he keeps firing. Going Rogue (W) is the strange one here. When an enemy kills his ally, Akshan marks them, and killing that champion revives the ally, which is a decent answer to a Galio who dives in, gets a kill and stays to tank.
Zed
Zed brings physical damage and two ways around the taunt. Living Shadow (W) dashes a shadow forward that he can swap places with, so he can step out of Shield of Durand’s range as Galio charges it. Then there’s Death Mark (R): untargetable for the dash in. Pick the moment right and Galio’s whole kit has nothing to land on, honestly.
How do you play the lane against Galio?
- Walk out of the charge. Shield of Durand slows him while he holds it, so step away before the taunt goes off.
- Keep a minion between you and him. Justice Punch knocks up the first enemy champion it reaches, and a wave in the way makes the angle harder.
- Trade when E is down. It’s 11 seconds at rank 1, and without it he has no knock-up to start a fight in lane.
- Track his ultimate. When Hero’s Entrance is up, any fight near an ally of his can become five against four, and 180 seconds at rank 1 is a long wait once he uses it.
- Push and roam when he roams. If he flies off to a side lane, a free wave or tower is the trade.
Which items counter Galio?
Magic Resist and Tenacity help most. Taunts last less with Tenacity, and Mercury’s Treads bring 30% of it (plus 20 Magic Resist). Quicksilver Sash (30 Magic Resist) and Mercurial Scimitar remove crowd control, but not Airborne effects, so they work on Shield of Durand’s taunt and not on Justice Punch or Hero’s Entrance. For AD champions, Maw of Malmortius adds 40 Magic Resist and a magic shield when you drop below 30% Health, and Edge of Night carries a spell shield that blocks his next ability. Mages can take Banshee’s Veil for the same spell shield. Every one of these has full stats in our LoL item database, and if your champion builds crit, Infinity Edge shows the cost breakdown.
When is Galio at his weakest?
Right after Hero’s Entrance. It’s his signature play, and it sits on a 180 second cooldown at rank 1, so for three minutes his team has no way to bring him across the map instantly. That’s the time to fight on the other side.
In practice, the lane window is after Justice Punch (the knock-up is his only reliable lane engage). Without the knock-up he’s a slow melee champion with a tornado and a taunt you can walk away from. Simple.
Look, unsure which of these picks belongs in which lane? Our guide to LoL roles explains the five positions. Galio’s skins are collected on the Galio skins page, and the Galio ARAM guide covers how his kit plays in a single lane. To be fair to him, a good Galio will still make plays; the best Galio counters just make him pay for every step he takes toward them.
FAQ
Who counters Galio the most?
Long-range mages like Xerath and Azir, and physical damage dealers with mobility, such as Talon, Akshan and Zed, who either outrange him or dodge his taunt and knock-up.
Does Quicksilver Sash work against Galio?
Partly. It removes crowd control except Airborne, so it cleanses the taunt from Shield of Durand but not the knock-ups from Justice Punch or Hero’s Entrance.
How long is Galio’s ultimate cooldown?
Hero’s Entrance has a 180/160/140 second cooldown in patch 26.21.
Is Magic Resist good against Galio?
Yes. His Colossal Smash passive deals magic damage, and Tenacity on items like Mercury’s Treads shortens his taunt.
Is this list based on win rates?
No. Every Galio counter here comes from comparing patch 26.21 ability text, nothing else. We don’t use win-rate data.
