Katarina Counters: Who Beats Katarina

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Katarina counters are champions who can cancel her Death Lotus channel, punish her for using Shunpo aggressively, or just eat her burst and trade back harder. She’s a resourceless melee assassin whose passive dramatically reduces all remaining ability cooldowns when she contributes to a kill, so the best counters bring reliable crowd control (anything she can’t dodge mid-combo).

These picks are based on how each champion’s kit actually plays into Katarina’s abilities. We don’t use win-rate data, this is about why these matchups work, not who has the highest number on a stats site.

Why is Katarina hard to counter?

  • Voracity (passive): whenever an enemy champion Katarina damaged recently dies, her remaining ability cooldowns are dramatically reduced.
  • Bouncing Blade (Q): throws a Dagger that bounces to nearby enemies, then ricochets onto the ground.
  • Preparation (W): a burst of Move Speed, tossing a Dagger directly above her.
  • Shunpo (E): blinks to a target, striking it if it’s an enemy.
  • Death Lotus (R): channels massive magic damage to the 3 nearest enemy champions.

Drop Daggers with Q and W, Shunpo onto them for Voracity damage, channel Death Lotus. Put simply, that’s the pattern. Interrupt the channel and her damage collapses. But what lands on her when Shunpo can blink her to a new position mid-combo, letting her dodge skillshot crowd control? In practice, you need point-and-click or area crowd control, anything that doesn’t require aim.

Which champions are the best Katarina counters?

Kassadin

Null Sphere (Q) interrupts channels. One Q ends Death Lotus. Void Stone (passive) also reduces incoming magic damage, and Null Sphere grants a temporary magic damage shield on cast. Voracity and Death Lotus deal magic damage, so between Void Stone’s magic damage reduction and Null Sphere’s magic shield, she struggles to find a favourable trade.

Annie

Pyromania (passive) charges a stun after four spell casts, and Annie begins the game with it ready. She can deliver that stun through Disintegrate (Q) on a single target or through Summon: Tibbers (R) to everyone in an area. Either one stops Death Lotus. Annie’s 625 attack range versus Katarina’s 125 also means she can harass from a distance Katarina simply can’t reach without committing Shunpo (which she has to eventually), and once Katarina does go in, there’s a stun waiting.

Malzahar

Nether Grasp (R) suppresses a single target, which stops Death Lotus; Quicksilver Sash or Mercurial Scimitar can remove it, but Mikael’s Blessing cannot. His passive, Void Shift, makes it even worse for her: after avoiding damage for a while, Malzahar gains massive damage reduction and CC immunity, so her opening Dagger burst just bounces off and he has time to answer with R. He also keeps the lane busy with Malefic Visions (E), which spreads to a nearby enemy when its target dies, and Void Swarm (W), which summons Voidlings, so she can’t just disappear and roam for free kills.

Lissandra

Ring of Frost (W) roots all nearby enemies. Katarina has to stand close to deal damage, so she walks right into it. Frozen Tomb (R) can stun Katarina directly or make Lissandra untargetable and invulnerable when self-cast. The stun cancels Death Lotus, and the self-cast lets Lissandra sit out its damage while untargetable and invulnerable. Beyond the 1v1, Lissandra shoves waves with Ice Shard (Q) and follows roams with Glacial Path (E), cutting off the kills Voracity needs.

Galio

Shield of Durand (W) charges a taunt that hits nearby enemies. It cancels Death Lotus. But why is Galio so hard for her to kill? He’s a Tank/Mage, and Magic Resist and health are exactly the stats that cut into Katarina’s magic damage. His ultimate, Hero’s Entrance, grants all allies near the landing zone a magic shield, so he can blunt her teamfight damage while arriving at the fight.

How do you counter Katarina in lane?

  • Hold one CC ability for Death Lotus. If you dump everything before she channels, she gets a free ult.
  • Stay off her Daggers. When Katarina picks one up, Voracity slashes all nearby enemies for magic damage. They’re visible on the ground. Step away.
  • Trade before she has all three basic abilities. Her pattern uses Bouncing Blade and Preparation to place Daggers and Shunpo to reach them, so with only one or two of those abilities her trades are weaker.
  • Ping missing the second she leaves lane. Katarina roams to get kills, kills dramatically reduce her cooldowns through Voracity, and one successful roam can snowball a game.

Which items counter Katarina?

Honestly, Magic Resist matters most. Mercury’s Treads give 20 MR and 30% Tenacity, and Banshee’s Veil adds 40 Magic Resist with an Annul spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. That shield can eat a Bouncing Blade before a fight and throw off her entire sequence.

If you want to go harder, Kaenic Rookern has 80 Magic Resist and 400 Health, plus a Magebane passive that grants a magic shield after you avoid magic damage for 15 seconds. Force of Nature stacks up to 70 bonus Magic Resist and 6% bonus Move Speed through its Steadfast passive after taking magic damage from champions 8 times (it literally gets stronger the more she hits you). On AD champions, Maw of Malmortius fits: its Lifeline passive triggers a magic shield when magic damage would drop you below 30% health. You can compare all of these in our items database.

Can Katarina still carry from behind?

It’s harder for her. The catch is, Voracity needs kills or assists to dramatically reduce cooldowns, so a behind Katarina sits there with longer gaps between ability rotations. But is she really out of the fight?

To be fair, one sloppy teamfight changes everything. A single kill dramatically reduces her remaining ability cooldowns, which can let her go again, but only if her enemies blow their crowd control before she channels. If you’re newer to mid lane, our guide to LoL roles covers the position. Want to browse her cosmetics? The Katarina skins page has them all, while the Katarina ARAM guide is there for anyone taking her onto the Howling Abyss. Every good Katarina counter comes down to the same plan: hold your CC for Death Lotus and build Magic Resist early.

FAQ

Who counters Katarina the hardest?

Kassadin. Null Sphere (Q) cancels Death Lotus on a basic ability cooldown. His passive cuts incoming magic damage, and the magic shield from Q soaks part of her burst, so she struggles to win the trade.

Can you dodge Katarina’s ultimate?

Death Lotus hits the 3 nearest enemy champions within range. You can walk out of range, but you can’t sidestep it. Interrupt the channel with crowd control instead.

What damage type does Katarina deal?

Voracity and Death Lotus deal magic damage. Stack Magic Resist and her damage falls off hard.

Does Katarina use mana?

No. Katarina has no resource. She can use abilities freely, which means she doesn’t get punished for short trades the way mana-dependent mid laners do.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. Win-rate data played no part here. Every champion on this list earned its spot through how its abilities interact with Katarina’s kit in patch 26.21.
