Lux Counters: Who Beats Lux
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Lux counters are champions who either dodge Light Binding or reach her once it’s spent. She’s a 550-range mage with a root on Q, a shield on W, a slowing zone on E and a long beam on R, and she has no dash at all, so anything that closes distance or ignores one spell gives her trouble.
We picked these five by reading kits, not stat sites. No win rates went into it, only how each ability meets hers.

Why is Lux hard to counter?
- Illumination (passive): her damaging spells charge a target, and her next attack ignites it for bonus magic damage that grows with level.
- Light Binding (Q): a sphere of light that binds and damages up to two enemy units. Cooldown 10 seconds at every rank.
- Prismatic Barrier (W): she throws her wand, and it shields every ally it touches on the way out. Cooldown 12 down to 10.
- Lucent Singularity (E): a zone that slows, then detonates for damage when she recasts. Cooldown 10 down to 8.
- Final Spark (R): a delayed beam that hits everything in a line, triggers Illumination and refreshes it. Cooldown 60/50/40.
Lux plays the whole game at arm’s length. Light Binding goes out, E slows whoever it caught, Illumination pops on the follow-up auto, and if you’re low the beam arrives from off screen (or what feels like off screen). That sounds scary. The catch is that every one of those threats depends on the root landing first, and a Lux who misses Q has a ten second wait with nothing to stop you walking at her.
Which champions are the best Lux counters?
Fizz
Fizz takes the bind out of the equation. Playful / Trickster (E) hops him onto his spear and makes him untargetable, so a hop timed to the cast leaves Light Binding with nothing to bind. Urchin Strike (Q) then dashes through her, Nimble Fighter shaves a flat amount off every hit he takes, and Chum the Waters knocks her up after a short delay (the fish sticks first, then the shark arrives). Put simply, he’s the cleanest answer in mid.
Kassadin
Void Stone means Kassadin takes reduced magic damage, and every part of Lux’s kit, from the passive to the ultimate, is magic. Null Sphere (Q) adds a shield that only soaks magic damage. Here, that’s all of it. Riftwalk (R) teleports him to a nearby spot, so the gap between his 150 range and her 550 range stops mattering. Honestly, it’s the matchup Lux players least want to see in mid.
Zed
Does Lux have a way out once Zed commits? Not really. Living Shadow (W) sends a shadow forward that he can swap to, and Death Mark (R) makes him untargetable while he dashes to her, so a Light Binding thrown in panic hits nothing. Sure, Prismatic Barrier can shield an ally it touches, but the mark still repeats a portion of everything Zed dealt once the three seconds run out.
Morgana
This one is for the support lane, where Lux sits a lot. Black Shield (E) gives an ally a barrier that absorbs magic damage and blocks disabling effects until it breaks, and a root is a disabling effect, so your ADC can stand in Light Binding and keep walking. Dark Binding (Q) roots Lux right back. Without a dash in her kit, Lux’s only real answer to that root is standing behind a minion and hoping the Q finds something else first.
Blitzcrank
Blitzcrank is the blunt version. Rocket Grab (Q) drags her across the lane, Power Fist (E) pops her into the air before she can throw anything, and Static Field (R) strips shields from nearby enemies and silences them briefly, which deletes Prismatic Barrier right when she needs it. For what it’s worth, a missed grab hurts him more than a missed bind hurts her.
How do you play the lane against Lux?
- Keep a minion between you and her. Light Binding stops after two units, so a minion in front eats part of it.
- Watch the Q, then go. It’s a 10 second cooldown at every rank, and that’s your window.
- Step out of Lucent Singularity before she recasts, because the slow comes first and the damage second.
- Respect the beam at low health. Final Spark is long and has a short wind-up, so moving sideways beats retreating straight back.
Which items counter Lux?
Magic Resist does most of the work. Tenacity from Mercury’s Treads (30%, plus 20 Magic Resist) cuts the bind short, and her kit has no physical damage worth mentioning anyway. Banshee’s Veil (40 Magic Resist on top of 105 Ability Power) carries a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability, so one Light Binding bounces off, and Edge of Night does the same for AD assassins. Need to clear the root after it lands? Quicksilver Sash removes crowd control for 1,300 gold. Tanks can look at Kaenic Rookern, whose Magebane passive builds a magic shield after 15 seconds without taking magic damage, and that suits a lane where Lux pokes from range. You’ll find every option compared in our item database, and if you’re the mage in this fight, Rabadon’s Deathcap is worth a look.
When are Lux counters strongest?
Right after Light Binding misses. That’s the rule. Without the root, Lux has a slow and a shield, and neither stops a champion who’s already walking at her.
Final Spark is the other moment. At rank 1 it’s a 60 second cooldown, so if she spends it to finish a low target, the minute after that beam is your best window to take a fight in lane or mid river.
If you’re still working out which lane each of these champions belongs in, our guide to the five roles explains it. Every Lux skin is on the Lux skins page. Playing her on the Howling Abyss instead? The Lux ARAM guide covers her balance changes, the build and how the single lane changes her job. Long story short: the best Lux counters either dodge the bind or carry Magic Resist, and then she’s a 550-range mage with no escape.
FAQ
Who counters Lux the most?
Champions who avoid or survive Light Binding and then reach her: Fizz, Kassadin and Zed in the mid lane, and Morgana or Blitzcrank in the support lane.
Does Lux have a dash?
No. Her kit is a root, a shield, a slowing zone and a beam. None of her abilities moves her, so gap closers are strong against her.
How long is the cooldown on Light Binding?
Light Binding has a 10 second cooldown at every rank in patch 26.21. It binds and damages up to two enemy units.
Does Banshee’s Veil block Lux’s root?
Yes. Annul, its passive, puts up a spell shield that eats the next enemy ability, Light Binding included.
Is this list based on win rates?
No. We chose each Lux counter from how the abilities interact in patch 26.21. We don’t use win-rate data.
