Neeko Counters: Who Beats Neeko

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Neeko counters are mid laners who shrug off her magic damage, ignore her root and stun, or simply aren’t there when Pop Blossom lands. She’s a 550 range mage who can disguise herself as an ally, throws a seed that blooms twice, roots a line of enemies with Tangle-Barbs and leaps into an area knock-up and stun. The picks that beat her break the disguise early or punish her once the combo is spent.

Five matchups follow, picked by laying her ability text next to theirs. No stat site was consulted.

Why is Neeko hard to counter?

  • Inherent Glamour (passive): she can look like an allied champion or other units. Immobilizing crowd control, casting a damaging spell, hitting a tower as a non-champion, or the disguise losing its full health bar all break it.
  • Blooming Burst (Q): a seed that deals magic damage and blooms again when it hits champions or kills units. Cooldown 9 seconds at rank 1, 7 at rank 5.
  • Shapesplitter (W): every third attack deals bonus magic damage and gives a short burst of Move Speed; the active sends out a clone she can redirect. Cooldown 16/15/14/13/12.
  • Tangle-Barbs (E): a tangle that damages and roots everything it passes through, getting larger, faster and longer-rooting after it passes through a champion. Cooldown 12/11.5/11/10.5/10.
  • Pop Blossom (R): after a short preparation she leaps, knocking up nearby enemies, then damages and stuns them on landing. The preparation is hidden while she’s disguised. Cooldown 120/105/90.

The disguise is what makes her awkward. A Neeko walking toward your team looking like your own jungler, with Pop Blossom’s wind-up hidden, gets a free knock-up on everyone near her. Add a root that grows each time it passes through a champion, and a clone to bait your skillshots, and she has more ways to start a fight than most mages. Thing is, every one of those tricks is magic damage or crowd control, and most of them are on long timers. Pop Blossom is 120 seconds at rank 1. Without it she’s a mid laner with a seed and a root.

Which champions are the best Neeko counters?

Malzahar

Void Shift (passive) grants massive damage reduction and immunity to crowd control while Malzahar hasn’t recently been damaged or disabled. Tangle-Barbs is a root, and Pop Blossom is a knock-up into a stun, so a Neeko who opens with either into a fresh Void Shift wastes the spell. Call of the Void (Q) silences champions, which stops Pop Blossom before she can cast it, and Nether Grasp (R) suppresses her over a damaging zone. Malefic Visions (E) also deals damage over time, and taking damage is one of the ways her disguise breaks. That’s a lot of overlap for one matchup.

Kassadin

Void Stone (passive) reduces the magic damage Kassadin takes, and Neeko’s entire kit deals magic damage. Null Sphere (Q) adds a temporary shield that absorbs magic damage on top, so the Blooming Burst trade costs him very little. Force Pulse (E) charges from spells cast in his vicinity, and a mage throwing seeds and tangles near him charges it for free. Riftwalk (R) teleports him and damages enemies around the landing spot. Does he survive her early levels? Mostly (a rooted melee champion is still a rooted melee champion), but after his ultimate he outscales her in every trade.

Fizz

Playful / Trickster (E) lifts Fizz onto his spear and makes him untargetable. When Neeko leaps for Pop Blossom, that hop is the answer, provided he sees it coming (her preparation is hidden only while she’s disguised, so it pays to break the glamour first). Nimble Fighter (passive) lets him move through units and shaves a flat amount off every source of damage. Urchin Strike (Q) dashes through her, and Chum the Waters (R) sticks a fish on any champion who touches it, then a shark knocks the target up a moment later. In practice, she ends up spending the combo early. Or never.

Yasuo

Wind Wall (W) puts up a moving wall that stops every enemy projectile for 4 seconds. Neeko throws Blooming Burst and slings Tangle-Barbs, and both have to travel to reach him. Way of the Wanderer (passive) builds a shield while he moves, which soaks the first chunk of damage in any trade. Sweeping Blade (E) dashes through targets, and Steel Tempest (Q) knocks Airborne at two stacks, setting up Last Breath (R). The catch: Pop Blossom isn’t a projectile. If she lands next to him, the wall does nothing.

Ekko

Chronobreak (R) makes Ekko untargetable and rewinds him to where he was a few seconds earlier, healing a percentage of the damage he took in that window. If Neeko spends Pop Blossom and Tangle-Barbs on him, he can rewind out of the aftermath with part of the damage refunded, and the enemies near his arrival point take heavy damage. Parallel Convergence (W) leaves an anomaly that slows and, if Ekko enters it, shields him and stuns enemies inside. Phase Dive (E) rolls evasively, and Timewinder (Q) slows on the way out and hits again on the way back. Honestly, he’s the trickiest pick for her to commit on.

How do you play the lane against Neeko?

  • Break the disguise. Any immobilizing crowd control, or damage equal to the disguise’s health bar, ends Inherent Glamour.
  • Don’t stand behind minions she’s targeting. Tangle-Barbs roots everything it passes through, and it grows stronger after hitting a champion.
  • Check every ally walking toward you. A disguised Neeko hides Pop Blossom’s wind-up, so an “ally” that suddenly stops near your team is often her.
  • Watch Shapesplitter. The clone can be redirected, so a Neeko that seems to walk away might be the clone.
  • Count her ultimate. 120 seconds at rank 1, and without it she has no area stun at all.

Which items counter Neeko?

All of her damage is magic, and her strength is crowd control, so you want Magic Resist with a way to cut the stun short. Mercury’s Treads add 20 Magic Resist and 30% Tenacity, shortening both the root and the stun. Quicksilver Sash strips crowd control except Airborne, so it won’t skip Pop Blossom’s knock-up but it does remove the stun after landing. Banshee’s Veil gives mages a Spell Shield that blocks the next enemy Ability (Edge of Night does it for AD champions), and a blocked Tangle-Barbs leaves her without her setup. For AD fighters, Maw of Malmortius shields against magic damage when Health drops low. Tanks and bruisers can buy Kaenic Rookern: go 15 seconds untouched by magic damage and it hands you a magic shield that eats her first seed. Everything else is in the items database.

When is Neeko at her weakest?

Right after Pop Blossom. The ultimate is 120 seconds at rank 1 and 90 at rank 3, and once it’s spent she has no way to lock down more than one or two people. A mid laner who survives the jump can turn around and fight her with nothing to fear except a root.

The other window is when Tangle-Barbs misses. It’s 12 seconds at rank 1, and her damage relies on it landing first. Real talk: a 550 range mage with her E down and her ultimate on cooldown is just a seed thrower. Push her in then.

Not sure which matchups belong to which lane? Our guide to LoL roles explains it. Every other champion has a page in our full guide index, her cosmetics fill the Neeko skins page, and if you play random-champion games the Neeko ARAM guide is the one to open next. Long story short, Neeko counters break her disguise or ignore her crowd control, and they punish the minutes after Pop Blossom.

FAQ

Who counters Neeko the most?

Malzahar, whose passive ignores her crowd control; Kassadin, who resists magic damage; and Fizz, Yasuo and Ekko, who dodge, block or rewind out of her combo.

What breaks Neeko’s disguise?

Immobilizing crowd control, casting a damaging spell, damaging a tower while disguised as a non-champion, or the disguise taking damage equal to its health bar.

Can you see Pop Blossom coming?

Only when she isn’t disguised. The ultimate has a short preparation, and that preparation is hidden while Inherent Glamour is active.

Does Quicksilver Sash stop Pop Blossom?

Only half of it. The knock-up is Airborne, which Quicksilver can’t cleanse, but the stun she applies when she lands comes off with the active.

How were these Neeko counters picked?

Each pick comes from comparing her patch 26.21 kit with that mid laner’s abilities, one spell at a time. No win-rate data went into the list.
