Galio ARAM Build and Guide

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.

A Galio ARAM build mixes Ability Power with tank stats: Blackfire Torch, Sunfire Aegis, Kaenic Rookern and Zhonya’s Hourglass. In ARAM, Galio deals 90% damage and takes 105% damage, so his tornado and taunt hit softer, but one lane full of grouped enemies makes every knock-up count.

These four items were picked by reading what they do in the current patch next to his kit. We don’t use win rates.

How is Galio changed in ARAM?

Mode adjustment Galio
Damage dealt 90%
Damage taken 105%

Both numbers go against him. A Winds of War tornado that would deal 1,000 total on Summoner’s Rift deals 900 here, and 1,000 damage aimed at him lands as 1,050. That’s a 10% cut to his output. Does it matter? Look, less than you’d think, because Galio’s value in a fight is the taunt and the knock-ups, and neither of those is scaled by a damage modifier.

Why does Galio fit a single lane?

His crowd control works on groups, and ARAM is always a group. Here’s his kit as Riot describes it for patch 26.21:

  • Colossal Smash (passive): every few seconds, his next basic attack deals bonus magic damage in an area.
  • Winds of War (Q): two windblasts that converge into a large tornado dealing damage over time. Cooldown 11 down to 7 seconds.
  • Shield of Durand (W) is a charged defensive stance that slows him while held, then taunts and damages every enemy nearby on release.
  • Justice Punch (E): he steps back, then charges and knocks up the first enemy champion he meets.
  • Hero’s Entrance (R): he targets an ally’s position, gives every ally there a magic shield, then lands and knocks up nearby enemies. Cooldown 180/160/140.

Distance stops mattering. On the Rift his ultimate is a cross-map tool; on the Howling Abyss every ally is already within reach, so Hero’s Entrance becomes a short-range engage that also shields your front line. Funny enough, the mode makes his big ultimate simpler to use, not weaker. And a taunt released in the middle of five clumped enemies pulls several of them toward him at once.

What should a Galio ARAM build focus on?

Ability Power for the tornado and the passive, and enough Health and resists to survive being the one who starts every fight.

Blackfire Torch first: 80 Ability Power, 600 Mana and 20 Ability Haste. Its Baleful Blaze passive adds bonus magic damage over 3 seconds when your abilities deal damage, and Blackfire then adds a slice of Ability Power for each enemy champion currently burning (it counts every champion the burn is on). A tornado through three or four enemies stacks that quickly.

Next, Sunfire Aegis for 350 Health, 50 Armor and 10 Ability Haste. Immolate deals magic damage per second to nearby enemies for 3 seconds after you take or deal damage, which is constant when you’re standing in the middle of a fight holding a taunt.

Kaenic Rookern comes third. 400 Health and 80 Magic Resist, plus Magebane, a magic shield you get after 15 seconds without taking magic damage. Between fights in ARAM there’s usually a short gap (long enough for that shield to come back, at least some of the time).

Finish with Zhonya’s Hourglass: 105 Ability Power, 50 Armor, and Time Stop puts you in stasis for 2.5 seconds. Land with Hero’s Entrance, knock everyone up, then freeze while the enemy unloads on you. Honestly, it’s the most satisfying button on him.

How do you play Galio on the Howling Abyss?

  • Start fights with E or R, never with Q. The knock-up is the engage; the tornado is the follow-up.
  • Charge Shield of Durand in the middle of a group. More enemies nearby means more of them taunted.
  • Ult onto your front line, not your carry. The magic shield helps whoever is about to take the most damage.
  • Poke with Winds of War between fights. At rank 5 it’s back every 7 seconds.
  • Use Zhonya’s right after you land, while enemies are still turning to deal with you.

How does shopping and Mark work for Galio?

Galio never sees a recall button here. Gold gets spent at the fountain, once at the start and again every time he respawns, so the smart move is deciding on Zhonya’s or Rookern while he’s still standing. Recovery between fights comes from the health relics dotted along the lane. A frontliner taking 105% damage burns through Health fast (that’s the price of starting every fight), so grabbing a relic between waves is worth the short detour.

Mark replaces the usual summoner spell options in this mode. It’s a snowball. Hit someone and you get a dash onto them, which gives Galio a third way into a fight on top of Justice Punch and Hero’s Entrance, and since summoner spells are fixed from the loading screen to the end, there’s no swapping it out later. The combo writes itself: snowball, dash, release the taunt, and the marked enemy walks straight into your team.

Is Galio good in ARAM?

Yes, as an engage tank, to be fair. The 90% damage dealt hurts his poke, but his job in ARAM is crowd control, and that’s untouched. Two knock-ups, a group taunt and a shield for allies is a lot of fight-starting power in a mode where the fight never really stops.

What beats him? Long-range poke that wears him down before he can reach anyone, and the Summoner’s Rift side of that list is in our Galio counters guide. If you want to know where he usually plays outside ARAM, the guide to LoL roles covers mid lane and support. His skins sit on the Galio skins page.

So a Galio ARAM game comes down to timing (and a little nerve). Punch in, taunt the group, land on your tank, and freeze before anyone catches you.

FAQ

Is Galio nerfed in ARAM?

Yes. The League of Legends Wiki’s champion data lists him at 90% damage dealt and 105% damage taken on the Howling Abyss.

What items does this Galio build use?

Blackfire Torch, Sunfire Aegis, Kaenic Rookern and Zhonya’s Hourglass, mixing Ability Power with Health, Armor and Magic Resist.

Is Hero’s Entrance still useful in one lane?

Yes. It shields allies in the target area with a magic shield and knocks up nearby enemies when he lands, so in ARAM it works as a short-range engage.

Do the ARAM damage modifiers affect his taunt?

No. The modifiers change damage dealt and taken. The taunt from Shield of Durand and the knock-ups are crowd control and aren’t scaled by them.

Is this build based on win rates?

No. Galio’s four items came from reading their patch 26.21 text against his taunt and knock-ups. We don’t use win-rate data.
