Kassadin Counters: Who Beats Kassadin

Updated for patch 26.21. The ability text below follows Riot’s official game data for the current patch.

Kassadin counters are mid laners who deal physical damage, bully him before level 6, and punish the short melee range he has until Riftwalk comes online. He’s a 150-range assassin who takes reduced magic damage, so AD assassins and fighters are the natural answer, while mages mostly feed his shields.

These five come from patch 26.21 kit text alone. We ignored win rates.

Why is Kassadin hard for mages to lane against?

  • Void Stone (passive): reduced magic damage taken, and he ignores unit collision.
  • Null Sphere (Q): an orb that damages and interrupts channels, then gives him a shield against magic damage. Cooldown 9/8.5/8/7.5/7.
  • Nether Blade (W): bonus magic damage on attacks; the active empowers his next attack and restores Mana. Cooldown 7.
  • Force Pulse (E): charges from spells cast near him, then fires a damaging, slowing cone. Cooldown 21/20/19/18/17.
  • Riftwalk (R): a short teleport that damages enemies around the landing; casting it again quickly costs more Mana and deals more damage. Cooldown 5/3.5/2.

Two things define the matchup. First, Void Stone cuts the magic damage he takes, and Null Sphere adds a shield that only absorbs magic damage, so a mage poking him gets far less value than usual. Second, Riftwalk’s cooldown drops to 2 seconds at rank 3, which turns him into the most mobile champion in the game late (well, close to it). Before that? He’s a melee mage with 150 range and no escape until 6. Real talk, that early window is where most of these picks win.

Which mid laners counter Kassadin best?

Talon

All physical, all the time. Noxian Diplomacy (Q) leaps to a target and stabs, critting in melee range, and Rake (W) sends a volley of daggers out and back with a slow on the return. Blade’s End (passive) stacks Wounds with spells, and an attack on a target with 3 stacks causes a heavy bleed. Void Stone doesn’t touch any of that. Assassin’s Path (E) vaults terrain, so Talon roams faster than Kassadin can follow early, and Shadow Assault (R) hides him while blades converge for damage.

Zed

Zed trades with physical shurikens from range and walks away. Every shadow he places with Living Shadow (W) copies his Razor Shuriken throw, and he can swap to that shadow’s spot when Kassadin chases. A shadow’s E slash slows too. Death Mark (R) makes Zed untargetable as he dashes to a champion, then repeats part of his damage 3 seconds later. Only his passive, Contempt for the Weak, deals magic damage, and it’s a small slice that triggers on low targets. Thing is, Kassadin’s Null Sphere shield blocks none of the physical part.

Akshan

Akshan has 500 range and Kassadin starts at 150, so lane one is a shooting gallery. Dirty Fighting (passive) fires an extra attack and gives a shield every third hit on a champion. Why does his Q feel so long? Avengerang gains range each time it hits an enemy, and it damages both ways. Heroic Swing (E) swings around terrain, firing at the nearest enemy. Comeuppance (R) stores bullets and fires them for damage based on missing Health, a good finisher on a Kassadin trying to Riftwalk away. Going Rogue (W) camouflages him near terrain (and in mid lane, terrain is never far).

Irelia

Bladesurge (Q) dashes to a target and heals Irelia, refreshing when the target is Marked or dies, so she sticks to Kassadin through minions. Flawless Duet (E) stuns and Marks enemies between her two blades. Defiant Dance (W) reduces physical damage during the charge, which matters little here, but the damage at release is real. Ionian Fervor (passive) stacks Attack Speed from spell hits and adds on-hit damage at max stacks. Vanguard’s Edge (R) Marks everyone hit, then leaves a slowing wall. Early, she’s simply stronger in melee range.

Naafiri

Naafiri’s packmates from We Are More (passive) attack whatever she hits, and her damage is physical. Her daggers make him bleed. Her W briefly removes her from targeting and adds more dogs (Null Sphere has nothing to hit during it). Eviscerate (E) dashes and heals the pack. Hounds’ Pursuit (R) sends Naafiri and her pack at a champion; a takedown lets her cast it again for a shield. Put simply, it’s a lot of physical bodies hitting a champion whose defense is built against magic.

How do you play against Kassadin?

  • Bully him before level 6. Until he can Riftwalk, his only way out of a trade is walking.
  • Don’t feed Force Pulse. It charges from spells cast near him, so trade with attacks when you can.
  • Watch Null Sphere. It interrupts channels and gives him a magic shield.
  • Punish Riftwalk spam. Chained casts cost extra Mana and leave him empty.
  • End the game before his ult hits rank 3. At that point Riftwalk is on a 2-second cooldown.

Which items help Kassadin counters?

Magic Resist and anti-burst. AD champions get two jobs done with Maw of Malmortius: 40 Magic Resist, and Lifeline shields against magic damage once a hit would drop you below 30% Health. Mages can buy Zhonya’s Hourglass and wait out a Riftwalk combo in 2.5 seconds of Stasis. Mercury’s Treads add Magic Resist and Tenacity against Force Pulse’s slow. Edge of Night is another option; its Annul blocks one enemy ability.

When is Kassadin weakest?

Levels 1 to 5. His range is 150, he has no dash, and every last hit puts him in range of an AD champion’s trade. That’s where all five picks here build their lead.

Low on Mana, too. Riftwalk costs more with each quick recast, so a Kassadin who blinked three times has to wait or use Nether Blade to refill. Our League roles overview explains mid lane, the Kassadin ARAM guide covers his random-mode build, and his skins are on the Kassadin skins page. In practice, Kassadin counters win early with physical damage and close the game before Riftwalk takes over.

FAQ

Who are the best Kassadin counters?

Physical damage mid laners who win early: Talon, Zed, Akshan, Irelia and Naafiri.

Why are AD champions good against Kassadin?

Void Stone reduces the magic damage he takes, and Null Sphere’s shield only absorbs magic damage. Physical damage gets through both.

When does Kassadin get strong?

After level 6, and much more as Riftwalk ranks up; its cooldown is 5, 3.5 and 2 seconds by rank.

Can you interrupt Kassadin’s Riftwalk?

No, it’s an instant teleport. Punish him after he lands, especially when chained casts have drained his Mana.

How were these Kassadin counters chosen?

From patch 26.21 ability text: each pick deals mostly physical damage and is stronger before he reaches level 6. Win rates were not used.
