Kalista Counters: Who Beats Kalista
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability descriptions come from Riot’s official game data for the current patch.
Kalista counters are bot laners who outrange her, stop the hops she makes between attacks, or block the spears she throws. She’s a 525-range marksman whose damage builds as Rend spears stack on a target, so anyone who keeps her from attacking freely takes most of her lane away.
The five below come from comparing patch 26.21 kits. Win rates had no part in it.

How does Kalista’s kit work?
- Martial Poise (passive): a movement command during her attack or Pierce wind-up makes her lunge a short distance as the attack fires.
- Pierce (Q): a fast spear that passes through enemies it kills. Cooldown 9.
- Sentinel (W): bonus damage when she and her Oathsworn hit the same target; the active sends a soul to scout a path. Cooldown 30.
- Rend (E): her attacks leave spears in targets; activating it rips them out to slow and deal damage that grows with the stack count.
- Fate’s Call (R): she pulls her Oathsworn ally to herself, and they can dash to a spot, knocking enemy champions back. Cooldown 160/140/120.
Everything starts with attacks. Each auto leaves a spear, each lunge from Martial Poise repositions her, and Rend cashes the spears out for a slow plus damage. Slow her down, and the hopping falls apart. Outrange her? She spends the lane walking into your attacks to land her own. Her Oathsworn bond also ties her to the support, and Fate’s Call on a 160-second cooldown at rank 1 makes the duo’s engage readable once you know it’s down.
Which bot laners are good Kalista counters?
Caitlyn
Caitlyn’s 650 range beats Kalista’s 525, so she gets free autos every time Kalista steps forward. Her traps are the second problem: a Kalista who lunges onto one stays rooted for 1.5 seconds and eats an empowered Headshot. Headshot (passive) fires every few attacks, with doubled range on trapped or netted targets. When Kalista does get close, the net slows her and the recoil carries Caitlyn back out. Piltover Peacemaker (Q) pierces after a 1-second rev-up, and Ace in the Hole (R) finishes a fleeing Kalista from huge range.
Samira
Blade Whirl (W) slashes around Samira and destroys enemy missiles, which means Kalista’s attacks and Pierce simply vanish for its duration. No spears, no Rend. Daredevil Impulse (passive) builds a combo from varied hits and adds magic damage up close; attacks on immobilized targets dash her into range. Her E dash passes through a target and comes back instantly after a takedown on a champion. Flair (Q) shoots or slashes, and Inferno Trigger (R) sprays shots at everyone around her. Is that fair? Probably not (and Rend can’t do anything with spears that never arrived).
Sivir
Spell Shield (E) blocks one enemy ability cast on Sivir and refunds Health plus a burst of speed when it works, so a Pierce aimed at her can just get eaten. Fleet of Foot (passive) gives Move Speed on each champion attack, enough to step out of extended Rend trades. Ricochet (W) speeds up her next few attacks and bounces them, which shoves waves fast. Her Q crossblade damages twice per throw. On The Hunt (R), the team-wide speed surge, also makes her attacks shave time off her cooldowns, which is the kind of thing that turns a two-on-two skirmish into a chase Kalista can’t win. Put simply, she wins the wave and blocks the one spell that matters.
Ashe
Frost Shot (passive) slows with every attack, and crits apply an even stronger slow. Slowed, she kites badly. Volley (W) fires a cone of slowing arrows, and Ranger’s Focus (Q) turns stacked Focus into a burst of Attack Speed. Hawkshot (E) scouts anywhere on the map, handy for spotting Fate’s Call setups. Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) stuns longer the farther it flies (and a Kalista mid-hop is an easy target). She has 600 range, too.
Jhin
Deadly Flourish (W) has huge range and roots a target that his allies, his traps or Jhin himself recently damaged. Captive Audience (E) places invisible lotus traps that slow before exploding, and Kalista’s lunges don’t avoid what she can’t see. Whisper (passive) fires four shots, the last one a guaranteed crit with execute damage. His grenade hops across as many as four targets. Then there’s the ult: four huge-range shots that cripple and execute, with the last one guaranteed to crit. To be fair, Jhin has to land these, since his attack speed is fixed.
How should Kalista counters play the lane?
- Don’t let spears stack. Rend damage grows with every spear in you, so back off after a few autos.
- Slow her. Her lunges depend on movement.
- Track Fate’s Call. At 160 seconds on rank 1, a used ult means the duo’s engage is gone for a while.
- Stand behind minions against Pierce. The spear only passes through enemies it kills.
- Trade when Pierce is down. It’s 9 seconds every time.
What items help Kalista counters?
Her damage comes from attacks, so anything that blunts autos is good value. Plated Steelcaps take 10% off every attack, Randuin’s Omen cuts critical strike damage by 30%, and Frozen Heart lowers nearby champions’ Attack Speed by 20%, which on a support is a real problem for her (her kit has no way around an Attack Speed cut). Mages caught in a Fate’s Call engage can use Zhonya’s Hourglass for 2.5 seconds of Stasis. In practice, armor beats chasing her.
When is Kalista weakest?
When she’s slowed, and when she can’t reach. Her lunges need movement, and her damage needs spears in you, so range and slows hit her two pillars at once. Thing is, she can’t stand still either; Martial Poise pushes her to keep moving.
Also, once Fate’s Call is used, the Oathsworn engage is gone for minutes. If you’re new to bot lane, our rundown of League roles explains how ADC and support work together. Playing her yourself? The Kalista ARAM guide covers her in random mode, and every look she has, base splash included, is listed on the Kalista skins page. Long story short, Kalista counters slow her, outrange her, or delete her spears before they land.
FAQ
Who counters Kalista in bot lane?
Marksmen with more range, slows or projectile blocks: Caitlyn, Samira, Sivir, Ashe and Jhin.
Does Samira’s W block Kalista’s spears?
Yes. Blade Whirl destroys enemy missiles while it’s active.
How does Kalista’s Rend work?
Her attacks leave spears in targets. Activating Rend rips them out, slowing and dealing damage that escalates with each spear.
What is the cooldown of Kalista’s ultimate?
By rank: 160, 140 and 120 seconds.
How were these Kalista counters chosen?
From patch 26.21 ability text: each pick outranges her, slows her hops or blocks her projectiles. Win rates were not used.
