Kog’Maw Counters: Who Beats Kog’Maw
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability text here is taken from Riot’s official game data for the current patch.
Kog’Maw counters are bot laners who bully him early, dash onto him, or outrange him before Bio-Arcane Barrage is up. He’s a 500-range marksman with no dash at all, so lane-dominant marksmen and anyone who can reach him fast take away the free attacks his late game depends on.
We judged the five picks on patch 26.21 ability text (win rates weren’t used).

What makes Kog’Maw strong, and what holds him back?
- Icathian Surprise (passive): 4 seconds after dying, he explodes for true damage around him.
- Caustic Spittle (Q): a projectile that deals magic damage and lowers Armor and Magic Resist briefly; passively adds Attack Speed. Cooldown 7.
- Bio-Arcane Barrage (W): for a while, his attacks gain range and deal a percent of the target’s max Health as magic damage. Cooldown 17.
- Void Ooze (E): an ooze that damages everything it passes and leaves a slowing trail. Cooldown 12.
- Living Artillery (R): a long-range shell for magic damage, much more on low-Health targets; rapid recasts cost more Mana. Cooldown 2/1.5/1.
Late in the game, Kog’Maw melts anything. Bio-Arcane Barrage turns every attack into percent max-Health damage from extended range, and Caustic Spittle strips resistances before it. So what’s the problem? He can’t move. No dash, no blink, no shield of his own, just a slow from Void Ooze and a team that hopefully protects him. Bio-Arcane Barrage also has a cooldown of 17 seconds, and between casts he’s a short-range marksman. That gap, and his early levels, are where his counters live.
Which bot laners are good Kog’Maw counters?
Draven
Draven hits hardest in exactly the stretch where Kog’Maw is weakest. Spinning Axe (Q) adds bonus physical damage, and catching the axe readies another, so he can keep two going at once. Blood Rush (W) gives Move Speed and Attack Speed, refreshing on every caught axe. His E shoves and slows. Whirling Death (R) sends two huge axes across the map and executes targets below his Adoration count. With 550 range against Kog’Maw’s 500, Draven gets the first hit in most trades (and the second, usually).
Lucian
Relentless Pursuit (E) is the dash Kog’Maw doesn’t have. Lucian closes in, fires a Lightslinger double shot after each ability, and those empowered attacks shorten his dash cooldown. Piercing Light (Q) shoots through a target. Hitting targets marked by his W star gives him extra speed. The Culling (R) unloads a stream of shots. Lightslinger (passive) also adds magic damage to his next attacks when a nearby enemy champion is immobilized, so a support stun on Kog’Maw sets up a full combo. Honestly, it’s a lane of short, painful trades.
Tristana
Rocket Jump (W) launches her onto a target and slows the area she lands in, and Explosive Charge (E) plants a bomb that explodes after a short delay. Buster Shot (R) knocks the target back and doubles the bomb radius if it’s carrying one. Rapid Fire (Q) speeds up her attacks. Draw a Bead (passive) extends her range as she levels, so she ends up outranging a Kog’Maw without W. To be fair, Bio-Arcane Barrage evens that out once it’s active.
Samira
Samira gets to Kog’Maw and stays there. Wild Rush (E) dashes through an enemy, and a champion kill refreshes it. Daredevil Impulse (passive) adds magic damage to her melee-range attacks and dashes her into attack range on immobilized targets, which pairs well with any support crowd control. Blade Whirl (W) slashes around her and destroys enemy missiles, so Caustic Spittle and Kog’Maw’s attacks vanish while it spins. Flair (Q) shoots or slices. Inferno Trigger (R) sprays shots in all directions. Put simply, a marksman with no escape is her favorite meal.
Caitlyn
Caitlyn’s 650 range is longer than Kog’Maw’s base 500, so she pokes freely whenever Bio-Arcane Barrage is down. Headshot (passive) adds bonus damage every few attacks. Yordle Snap Trap (W) immobilizes for 1.5 seconds with an empowered Headshot, and a Kog’Maw who can’t dash out has to walk around her traps. Her net slows and pushes her back if he ever closes in, while Piltover Peacemaker (Q) pierces down the lane after a short rev-up. Low on Health and limping away? The ult reaches him from across the screen.
How should Kog’Maw counters play the lane?
- Trade when Bio-Arcane Barrage is down. Its cooldown is 17 seconds, and without it his range is short.
- Walk away from his body. Icathian Surprise explodes for true damage 4 seconds after he dies.
- Dodge Caustic Spittle. It lowers your Armor and Magic Resist before his damage lands.
- Don’t stand in Void Ooze. The trail slows, and he needs you slow.
- Dive him with your support. He has no dash or escape of his own.
Which items help Kog’Maw counters?
Bio-Arcane Barrage deals magic damage, Caustic Spittle shreds both resistances, and his attacks stack on top. Marksmen can lean on Maw of Malmortius (its Lifeline shield soaks magic damage once you drop under 30% Health). Diving him? Frozen Heart, which reduces nearby champions’ Attack Speed by 20%. Mercurial Scimitar’s Quicksilver removes crowd control (not Airborne) if his team peels with a slow or stun.
When is Kog’Maw weakest?
Early, and without W. His first levels lack the items that make Bio-Arcane Barrage scary, and between casts he’s a short-range marksman who can’t escape.
And any time his team can’t peel. Real talk, Kog’Maw is only as safe as the four people around him. New to the duo lane? Our LoL role guide covers it. For random mode there’s the Kog’Maw ARAM guide, and the Kog’Maw skins page collects his looks. Long story short, Kog’Maw counters punish him early and dive him while W is down.
