Kog’Maw ARAM Build and Guide

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability text comes from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.

A Kog’Maw ARAM build is an on-hit build: Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Blade of The Ruined King, Terminus, then Guardian Angel on Berserker’s Greaves. He’s nerfed hard on the Howling Abyss (88% damage dealt, 110% damage taken), because Bio-Arcane Barrage and Living Artillery spam punish a lane where enemies can’t spread out.

For this Kog’Maw ARAM guide, each item was matched to his patch 26.21 kit and its own description. No win rates.

Why is Kog’Maw nerfed in ARAM?

ARAM modifier Kog’Maw
Damage dealt 88%
Damage taken 110%

Two of his abilities love this map. Living Artillery has a cooldown of 1 to 2 seconds and reveals what it hits, so on a single lane he can shell the enemy team from far behind his own frontline; Bio-Arcane Barrage melts tanks with percent max-Health damage. Riot cuts both sides: 88% damage dealt and 110% damage taken. Is he still playable? Yes, as long as his team protects him (and in random comps, that’s never guaranteed).

How does Kog’Maw’s kit work on the Howling Abyss?

From Riot’s patch 26.21 data:

  • Icathian Surprise (passive): he explodes for true damage 4 seconds after dying.
  • Caustic Spittle (Q): magic damage plus a short Armor and Magic Resist shred; the passive adds Attack Speed. Cooldown 7.
  • Bio-Arcane Barrage (W): extra attack range and percent max-Health magic damage on attacks for a while. Cooldown 17.
  • Void Ooze (E): damages everything along its path and leaves a slowing trail. Cooldown 12.
  • Living Artillery (R): a long-range shell with magic damage, far more against low-Health targets; quick recasts cost extra Mana. Cooldown 2/1.5/1.

Icathian Surprise fits ARAM nicely. Deaths happen in the middle of crowded fights, and four seconds later Kog’Maw blows up for true damage on everyone still standing near his body. Void Ooze is his peel: a line of slow across a narrow lane catches divers more often than it would on the Rift. And Living Artillery is free poke between fights, only limited by its rising Mana cost. Real talk, his one problem is that he can’t move out of danger on his own.

What is the best Kog’Maw ARAM build?

Guinsoo’s Rageblade first. Seething Strike stacks Attack Speed with each attack, and at full stacks every third attack applies on-hit effects twice, which doubles Bio-Arcane Barrage’s percent max-Health damage on those hits. Wrath adds 30 magic damage on-hit.

Blade of The Ruined King second. Mist’s Edge adds a share of current Health to every attack, a second percent-Health source against tanks, and Clawing Shadows slows by 30% after three attacks on a champion. The 10% Life Steal helps a champion who can’t walk to relics safely.

Third, Terminus. Juxtaposition alternates Light attacks (Armor and Magic Resist for 5 seconds) with Dark attacks (10% Armor and Magic Penetration), so he gets defense and penetration from one slot. Guardian Angel finishes: Rebirth revives him after 4 seconds of Stasis on lethal damage, and Icathian Surprise still fires on the first death. Berserker’s Greaves for 30% Attack Speed.

Want the artillery version? It swaps in Luden’s Echo and Archangel’s Staff for Living Artillery damage and Mana, and it’s a fun change of pace in a Kog’Maw ARAM game. Honestly, the on-hit path does more in a five-on-five.

How should Kog’Maw position in teamfights?

  • Stand behind your frontline. He has no dash or escape.
  • Open with Caustic Spittle. It lowers the target’s Armor and Magic Resist before your attacks land.
  • Activate Bio-Arcane Barrage when the fight starts, not before. Its cooldown is 17 seconds.
  • Drop Void Ooze between you and divers. The trail slows anyone walking through.
  • Space out Living Artillery. Quick recasts cost more Mana each time.

Which summoner spells and fountain buys suit Kog’Maw?

Lobby picks are final. Flash is mandatory for a marksman who can’t dash. The second spell should keep him alive, not start fights; Mark pulls him toward the enemy, which is the last place he wants to be. Put simply, take the most defensive pair you can.

The fountain is the only shop, visited at the start and after each death. To be fair, it’s simple: aim to complete Guinsoo’s Rageblade on the first return. Health relics are risky for an immobile carry, so grab only the ones on your side of the lane.

Is Kog’Maw good in ARAM?

He’s fine with a frontline and poor without one. The nerfs (88% damage dealt, 110% damage taken) are among the heavier ones in the mode, but percent max-Health damage, nonstop artillery and a death explosion still give him a role. Dive and hard engage are his nightmare.

The Kog’Maw counters guide lists who punishes him, and his looks are on the Kog’Maw skins page.

In short, the Kog’Maw ARAM build is Guinsoo’s Rageblade, Blade of The Ruined King, Terminus and Guardian Angel on Berserker’s Greaves: stay behind the frontline, shred with Caustic Spittle, then turn on Bio-Arcane Barrage when the fight begins.

FAQ

Is Kog’Maw nerfed in ARAM?

Heavily. The Wiki lists 88% on his damage output and 110% on incoming damage for patch 26.21.

Which item should Kog’Maw finish first?

Guinsoo’s Rageblade, because its fully stacked third attack doubles on-hit effects, and Bio-Arcane Barrage’s damage is one of them.

How often can Kog’Maw use his ultimate?

Living Artillery has a 2, 1.5 and 1-second cooldown by rank, but each quick recast costs more Mana.

Does Kog’Maw’s passive work in ARAM?

Yes. Icathian Surprise explodes for true damage 4 seconds after he dies, the same as on Summoner’s Rift.

How was this Kog’Maw build chosen?

From his patch 26.21 kit and item texts: percent max-Health on-hit damage, an immobile carry and heavy ARAM nerfs. No win rates were used.
