Archangel’s Staff is a 2,900 gold mage item in League of Legends that grows with your Mana: 70 Ability Power, 600 Mana and 25 Ability Haste in patch 26.21. Awe turns 1% of your bonus Mana into Ability Power, and Manaflow stacks max Mana as you land abilities until the staff transforms into Seraph’s Embrace at 360 max Mana.

How do Awe and Manaflow work together?

They form a loop. Manaflow raises your maximum Mana every time you land an ability, and Awe converts that growing Mana pool into Ability Power, so the item gets stronger the longer you play.

The Manaflow details matter. Each landed ability grants 5 max Mana, doubled when it hits a champion, and the charges refill every 8 seconds up to 5 stored at a time. So a mage who poke-trades in lane stacks far faster than one who only casts on the wave (hitting the enemy laner counts double, after all). Once you’ve gained 360 max Mana this way, the item becomes Seraph’s Embrace.

What’s the catch? Time. Stacking takes a while, which is why players often buy Tear of the Goddess early: its own Manaflow starts the count before the full staff is built.

Is Archangel’s Staff worth the gold?

Yes, before a single stack. The three stats total 3,250 gold against 2,900 gold, for 112% efficiency.

Here’s the math with same-patch basic items: 70 Ability Power at 20 gold per point is 1,400 gold, 600 Mana at 1 gold per point is 600, and 25 Ability Haste at 50 gold per point is 1,250. That leaves a 350 gold surplus, and Awe adds Ability Power on top of the listed 70 from the very first second. Honestly, it’s one of those items that’s efficient on paper and gets better with every stack.

What’s the build path?

Three components: Tear (400 gold), Lost Chapter (1,200 gold) and Fiendish Codex (850 gold), then 450 gold to finish. Tear goes first almost every time, because Manaflow only stacks while you own it. Lost Chapter next if you’re short on Mana, Codex next if you want haste and a bit of damage sooner.

The staff then upgrades on its own into Seraph’s Embrace once Manaflow is complete (no gold needed, just landed spells).

How has the item changed over the years?

A lot. Riot’s data has it from 2013, and the record runs to 2,900 gold today after several rounds of cost and stat swaps. The bigger moves in the last few seasons:

  • Patch 13.1: cost 2,600 → 3,000 gold, Ability Power 60 → 80, Ability Haste added at 10, effect text changed.
  • Patch 14.1: Ability Power 70 → 80, Ability Haste 10 → 20, Mana 500 → 600.
  • Patch 14.3: cost 3,000 → 2,900 gold, effect text changed.
  • Patch 14.4: Ability Haste 20 → 25.
  • Patch 14.19: Ability Power 80 → 70.

The most recent entry is a text change in patch 25.S1.3. Real talk, the item has bounced between 70 and 80 Ability Power more than once, so the trend is tuning rather than a steady nerf. The table above lists all the changes, and our LoL items database has the same history for every other mage item.

Which champions should build Archangel’s Staff?

Mages who cast often and want a big Mana pool: poke champions, control mages with spammable basic abilities, and anyone whose kit runs out of Mana without help. The item fixes that problem first and then turns it into damage. Funny enough, landing spells in lane is literally how the item upgrades itself.

Burst mages who cast once and wait for cooldowns stack slowly, and champions without Mana can’t use it at all. Is your champion a spammer or a one-shot caster? Each of our champion guides covers the kit, and if the answer is “spammer”, Archangel’s Staff is usually a first or second item.
