Ryze ARAM Build and Guide
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.
A Ryze ARAM build stacks Mana, Ability Haste and some Health, because his passive turns bonus Mana into damage and his spells reset each other. The Howling Abyss helps a little: Ryze deals 105% damage and takes 95% damage in ARAM. In a corridor full of clumped enemies, Spell Flux spreads to several targets and Overload bounces between all of them.
We built this from his patch 26.21 ability text, item by item, with no win-rate chart involved.

How is Ryze changed in ARAM?
| ARAM modifier | Ryze |
|---|---|
| Damage dealt | 105% |
| Damage taken | 95% |
A mild buff on both sides. His spell loop deals 5% more damage, and he takes 5% less. For a short-range mage with no dash, the defensive half matters as much as the damage. Why help him? Ryze’s portal ultimate is a strategic tool on the Rift, used to move a team across the map, and on a single lane it’s much less useful. The modifiers offset that loss (a fair trade, all things considered).
Why does Ryze fit the Howling Abyss?
Because Spell Flux marks everyone near its target, and Overload bounces between all marked enemies. Riot’s patch 26.21 text:
- Arcane Mastery (passive): bonus Mana adds damage to his spells, and Ability Power increases his maximum Mana.
- Overload (Q): an energy bolt at the first enemy hit, bouncing to Flux targets for extra damage; other basic abilities reset it, and two charged runes add a speed burst. Cooldown 5.
- Rune Prison (W): damages and slows a target, or roots it if it has Flux. Cooldown 11/10.5/10/9.5/9.
- Spell Flux (E): damages an enemy and debuffs those around it, adding extra effects to his spells on them. Cooldown 3.5/3.25/3/2.75/2.5.
- Ultimate (R): passively strengthens Overload on Flux targets; actively opens a portal that teleports nearby allies to a chosen spot after a few seconds. Cooldown 180/160/140.
Honestly, the loop works better here. Spell Flux on the frontliner spreads to the clump behind them, then Overload bounces through every marked champion, and Rune Prison roots whoever looks dangerous. Since each basic ability resets Overload, the rotation never really stops in a long fight. The portal still has a use (teleporting your team behind the enemy for a surprise engage), it just isn’t a map-wide play anymore.
What should a Ryze ARAM build focus on?
Put simply, Mana first, because Arcane Mastery turns it into damage. Then Ability Haste and Health, since he fights at 550 range with no escape.
Archangel’s Staff comes first. Awe grants Ability Power equal to 1% of bonus Mana, and Manaflow grows his maximum Mana each time his abilities land, more against champions, until it transforms into Seraph’s Embrace. ARAM lets him hit champions constantly, so it stacks fast. It also carries 25 Ability Haste.
Rod of Ages is second. Timeless adds Health, Mana and Ability Power every 60 seconds up to 10 times, and Eternity turns 10% of the damage he takes from champions into Mana while healing him for 25% of the Mana he spends. On a map with no recall, that self-sustain is a big deal for a champion who casts every second.
Third, Cosmic Drive. Spelldance grants Move Speed for 4 seconds whenever he deals magic damage to a champion, which is his only reliable way to reposition, and it adds 350 Health and 25 Ability Haste.
Rylai’s Crystal Scepter rounds it out. Rimefrost slows enemies hit by his damaging abilities by 30%, which keeps targets inside his range. Sorcerer’s Shoes and their 12 flat Magic Penetration finish the set.
How do you play Ryze on the Howling Abyss?
- Open with Spell Flux on the front of a clump. It marks everyone nearby, setting up Overload bounces.
- Root with Rune Prison only after Flux is applied. Without it, it just slows.
- Cycle your spells. Each basic ability resets Overload, so keep alternating.
- Use the portal to drop your team behind the enemy for a surprise engage.
- Stay behind your frontline. He has no dash, only a short speed burst from Overload.
How do no-recall shopping and Mark work for Ryze?
There’s no recall in ARAM. His shopping windows are the opening minute and each respawn. Rod of Ages helps a lot here, since it heals him for part of the Mana he spends. Ryze actually likes long lives (Archangel’s Staff and Rod of Ages both keep growing over time).
Mark is a snowball that grants a dash to whoever it hits. Summoners are set before loading. Ryze has no dash, so Mark is tempting, but jumping into the enemy team isn’t really his job. Is it ever right? Occasionally, to chase a low target. To be fair, Flash is the safer pick for a mage this immobile.
Is Ryze good in ARAM?
He’s decent. The 105% damage dealt and 95% damage taken modifiers help, and clumped enemies make Spell Flux and Overload hit far more targets. His weak spot is mobility. With 550 range and no dash, any diver who reaches him wins, unless Rune Prison lands first.
The mid laners who give him trouble are in our Ryze counters guide. He plays mid on the Rift, which our LoL roles overview explains. The League items database lists the item numbers in full, while his cosmetics fill the Ryze skins page.
Long story short, the Ryze ARAM build is Archangel’s Staff, Rod of Ages, Cosmic Drive and Rylai’s Crystal Scepter on Sorcerer’s Shoes, cycling Spell Flux and Overload through the enemy clump.
FAQ
