Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 540 ÷ 1100 = 49%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Magic Penetration (no basic item sells this stat alone).

Sorcerer’s Shoes are 1,100 gold boots in League of Legends for mages and other magic damage dealers: 12 flat Magic Penetration and 45 Move Speed in patch 26.21. There’s no passive and no active. The whole item is one damage stat on top of the usual boots speed, and that stat is the reason AP champions buy them so often.

What does flat Magic Penetration actually do?

It ignores a fixed amount of the target’s Magic Resist when your magic damage lands. With 12 points, every spell treats the enemy as if they had 12 less Magic Resist than they really do.

The flat part is important. A fixed reduction matters most against targets with little Magic Resist to begin with (squishy carries, and pretty much everyone in the early game), because it removes a bigger share of what they have. And against a tank who has stacked resistances? The same 12 points barely dent the total. Look, that’s why mages pair these boots with percentage penetration later, when the enemy frontline starts buying Magic Resist.

Are they gold efficient?

The standard formula says 49%, and it’s misleading here. Only the Move Speed gets priced: 45 points at 12 gold each make 540 gold, against 1,100 gold.

Magic Penetration is left out, because no basic item sells it on its own. So the number shows you what the speed is worth and nothing about the damage. To be fair, there’s no clean way to price penetration anyway, since its value depends on who you’re hitting and how much Magic Resist they have built (honestly, it’s worth the most in the first fifteen minutes or so).

How do you build Sorcerer’s Shoes?

Start with Boots (300 gold), then pay 800 gold. Done.

They upgrade later into Spellslinger’s Shoes, which raise the flat Magic Penetration to 20 and add a percentage of Magic Penetration on top, at the same 45 Move Speed. That’s the natural next step for a mage whose targets have started buying resistances.

How has the item changed?

Only the penetration number moves. Riot’s data has the boots from 2013, with these stat changes:

  • Patch 7.22: Magic Penetration 15 → 18, effect text changed.
  • Patch 14.15: Magic Penetration 18 → 15.
  • Patch 14.21: Magic Penetration 15 → 12.

Two cuts in the same season, then. Riot seems to have moved some of the boots’ power into the upgrade instead, which makes sense given that Spellslinger’s Shoes carry both kinds of penetration. The item database lists the same history for every other boots option.

Who should buy them?

Mages first, and really any champion whose damage is mostly magic: AP assassins, battle mages, and some AP junglers. If your lane opponent is a squishy mage or marksman with no Magic Resist items (very common in the first few backs), the flat penetration hits especially hard early on.

When should you skip them? When the enemy team has a lot of stuns, Tenacity boots may keep you alive longer, and when you’re the one getting focused, survival beats damage. Thing is, there’s no rule that says every mage must buy the damage boots. If you’re unsure, our champion guides show which picks normally take them, and against a squishy enemy backline, Sorcerer’s Shoes are almost always the right call.

FAQ

How much do Sorcerer’s Shoes cost?

1,100 gold in patch 26.21, made of Boots and a 800 gold upgrade. You get 770 gold back if you sell them.

How much Magic Penetration do they give?

12 flat Magic Penetration, plus 45 Move Speed.

Do Sorcerer’s Shoes have a passive?

No. All of their value is in the two stats.

What do they upgrade into?

Spellslinger’s Shoes, which give 20 flat Magic Penetration plus percentage Magic Penetration.

Why is the gold efficiency so low?

The formula only prices Move Speed. Magic Penetration has no basic item to compare against, so it is not counted.
