Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move Speed | 45 | 12 g | 540 g |
| Total stat value | 540 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 540 ÷ 1100 = 49%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Magic Penetration, Magic Penetration (no basic item sells this stat alone).

We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.
Spellslinger’s Shoes are the tier-three upgrade of Sorcerer’s Shoes in League of Legends, worth 1,100 gold: 20 flat Magic Penetration, a percentage of Magic Penetration on top, and 45 Move Speed in patch 26.21. There’s no passive. They exist to make your spells hit harder against every target, squishy or tanky.
What do Spellslinger’s Shoes give?
Two kinds of Magic Penetration plus the usual boots speed. Flat Magic Penetration ignores a fixed amount of the target’s Magic Resist, which matters most against squishy champions with low resistances. Percentage Magic Penetration ignores a share of it, which matters more against tanks who stack Magic Resist. Against a frontliner sitting on a pile of resistances, cutting a share off the top removes far more than any fixed amount could, and that gap widens with every Magic Resist item the tank finishes.
Having both is the point, sure. Sorcerer’s Shoes give only the flat kind, so they fall off a bit once the enemy frontline builds resistances. The upgrade adds the percentage part (the exact figure sits in the stats block above the article, straight from Riot’s data), and that keeps your damage relevant into the late game. Simple boots. No buttons, no timing, and to be fair, nothing to misplay either.
Are Spellslinger’s Shoes gold efficient?
The number says 49%, but it’s misleading. Only the Move Speed has a basic item price: 45 at 12 gold per point is 540 gold, and that’s the whole 540 gold of counted value.
Neither type of Magic Penetration is priced, since no basic item sells it. For what it’s worth, mages usually pay a lot for penetration on legendary items, so getting both kinds in the boots slot is a real saving. Is the upgrade worth taking? Obviously, as it costs nothing over Sorcerer’s Shoes and both penetration stats are among the most valuable for a mage.
How do you get the upgrade?
From Sorcerer’s Shoes. In Riot’s item data, Sorcerer’s Shoes are the only component and there’s no combine cost, so the total stays at 1,100 gold and the shoes sell for 770 gold. The data doesn’t say how the upgrade unlocks in a match, so look in the client shop.
What was item 3175 before?
Head of Kha'Zix, then Bonetooth Necklace, then Head of Kha’Zix again (yes, really). Those were old Rengar trophy items from the early years of the game, long gone from the shop, and the 2025 season finally turned the ID into boots:
- Patch 25.S1.1: renamed from Head of Kha’Zix to Spellslinger’s Shoes, Magic Penetration 19 and 10% added, Move Speed 50, value 1,850 gold.
- 25.S1.2 trimmed it to 18 flat and 8%.
- Patch 25.09: value 1,850 → 1,600 gold, percentage penetration 8% → 7%.
- Patch 26.1: value 1,600 → 1,100 gold, percentage back to 8%, Move Speed 50 → 45.
- Patch 26.16: flat Magic Penetration 18 → 20.
Lots of small tuning in under two years (Riot clearly keeps an eye on mage boots), and patch 26.16 is the latest buff. The old trophy entries still show in the table above, and our LoL items database lists every other boots upgrade too.
Who should take Spellslinger’s Shoes?
Mages and other Ability Power champions who bought Sorcerer’s Shoes, which in practice covers most burst and control mages in mid lane plus some Ability Power junglers and supports. If you deal magic damage with spells and don’t need defensive boots, this is your path.
That’s most mages.
Honestly, you decide at tier two. Facing a fed assassin? Then think twice before you commit to damage boots, because a single death to that assassin costs more than the extra penetration earns you in the next three fights. When the enemy team has fed assassins or heavy crowd control, defensive boots like Mercury’s Treads can be the better call, and then you’ll never see this upgrade. Our guide to LoL roles covers where mages play; for most of them, Spellslinger’s Shoes are the default end of the boots path.
FAQ
Which boots do they upgrade from?
Sorcerer’s Shoes.
Do they have a passive?
No. They give flat Magic Penetration, percentage Magic Penetration and Move Speed.
How much flat Magic Penetration do they give?
The flat part is 20; the percentage part comes in addition to it.
What’s the difference between flat and percentage Magic Penetration?

Head of Kha’Zix, an old Rengar item.
