Guinsoo’s Rageblade is a 3,000 gold on-hit item in League of Legends: 30 Attack Damage, 30 Ability Power and 25% Attack Speed in patch 26.21. Wrath adds 30 magic damage to every attack, and Seething Strike ramps your Attack Speed with each hit until every third attack applies all your on-hit effects twice.

What do Wrath and Seething Strike do?

Wrath is the simple part: each basic attack deals 30 bonus magic damage on-hit, flat, from the first hit onward.

Seething Strike is where the item earns its reputation. Every attack grants 8% Attack Speed for 4 seconds, stacking up to 4 times, and once you’re at full stacks every third attack triggers your on-hit effects a second time. That includes Wrath itself, so the item doubles its own damage, and it includes whatever other on-hit items and abilities you carry.

So what does “twice” mean in gold terms? A champion with three or four on-hit sources gets a free extra proc of all of them every third swing, which is why Guinsoo’s Rageblade scales with how much on-hit damage you already own rather than with its own stat line. Alone, it’s fine. With a stacked on-hit build, it’s the item that ties everything together.

Is Guinsoo’s Rageblade gold efficient?

Not on stats. The three stats are worth 2,275 gold on a 3,000 gold item, which is 76% efficiency and a 725 gold shortfall.

Here’s the split from basic items of the same patch: 30 Attack Damage at 35 gold per point is 1,050 gold, 30 Ability Power at 20 gold per point is 600 gold, and 25% Attack Speed at 25 gold per 1% is 625 gold. The two passives fill the gap (Wrath alone is a permanent 30 magic damage on every attack, and the stacking Attack Speed reaches far above the listed 25%), so the shop price only looks bad if you ignore them. If we’re being picky, a champion who can’t keep attacking for long is paying full price for passives that never get going.

What’s in the build path?

Three components: Amplifying Tome for 400 gold, Recurve Bow for 700 and Pickaxe for 875, then a 1,025 gold combine to finish it (that combine is the biggest single chunk of the price). In practice, Recurve Bow is the usual first buy because it already gives Attack Speed and a small on-hit, so it feels like a mini version of the finished item.

Nothing builds out of it. Honestly, nothing needs to.

How has the item changed over the patches?

More than almost any other item in the shop. Riot’s data has it from 2013 or earlier, and the modern version dates from patch 13.10, when it was rebuilt from a crit and Attack Speed item into the hybrid it is now. The bigger entries since then:

  • Patch 13.10: cost 2,600 → 3,200 gold, Attack Damage and Ability Power added at 30 each, Attack Speed 45% → 25%, crit chance removed.
  • Patch 14.1: cost 3,200 → 3,000 gold.
  • Patch 14.3: Attack Damage and Ability Power 30 → 35.
  • Patch 14.19: both back to 30.
  • Patch 26.18: effect text changed.

Before 13.10 the item went through a long stretch of cost changes (3,300 in 2018, 2,600 by patch 11.10) and passive rewrites, all listed in the full table above. Funny enough, the stat line got weaker twice while the item itself stayed a core buy, because the on-hit doubling is what people pay for. The LoL items database has the same patch-by-patch record for every other item.

Who should build Guinsoo’s Rageblade?

Champions who attack fast and already stack on-hit damage: marksmen and fighters with on-hit passives in their kit, plus hybrid champions who want both Attack Damage and Ability Power from one slot. The more on-hit effects you own, the better the third-hit double gets. Do you have at least one other on-hit item or ability? Then Rageblade usually goes second or third.

Crit marksmen get little from it (no crit chance, and the Ability Power is wasted), and burst champions never reach full stacks. Long story short, if your damage comes from landing many attacks in a row, this is the item that makes each attack carry more, and if it doesn’t, Guinsoo’s Rageblade belongs in someone else’s build.
