Kai’Sa Counters: Who Beats Kai’Sa
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Kai’Sa counters are bot laners who destroy her missiles, out-range her, or punish the Killer Instinct dive with crowd control. She’s a 525-range marksman whose attacks stack Plasma for magic damage, with a swarm of seeking missiles, a long-range Void Seeker, a speed boost, and an ultimate that dashes her next to a marked champion.
These five come from setting her patch 26.21 ability text next to theirs. There’s no win-rate data underneath.

Why is Kai’Sa hard to counter?
- Second Skin (passive): her attacks stack Plasma for increasing bonus magic damage, allies’ immobilizing effects help stack it, and her item purchases upgrade her basic spells.
- Icathian Rain (Q): a swarm of missiles that seek nearby targets; upgraded, it fires more missiles. Cooldown 10/9/8/7/6.
- Void Seeker (W): a long-range missile that marks enemies with her passive; upgraded, it applies more marks and cuts its own cooldown on a champion hit. Cooldown 20/18.5/17/15.5/14.
- Supercharge (E): a burst of Move Speed followed by Attack Speed; upgraded, it briefly grants Invisibility. Cooldown 16/14.5/13/11.5/10.
- Killer Instinct (R): a dash near an enemy champion. Cooldown 130/100/70.
Kai’Sa scales with items in an unusual way, since her purchases upgrade her spells, and she plays both as a marksman and a burst caster. Icathian Rain bursts anyone isolated, Void Seeker pokes from long range, and Killer Instinct lets her dive onto a champion once the setup is done. Where’s the gap? Her main damage tools are missiles by name, and some champions can destroy missiles. Her range is 525, which several marksmen beat. And Killer Instinct puts her next to an enemy champion (sometimes the wrong one), right where crowd control can catch her.
Which champions are the best Kai’Sa counters?
Samira
Icathian Rain is a swarm of missiles. Void Seeker is a missile. Blade Whirl (W) slashes around Samira and destroys enemy missiles, so both of Kai’Sa’s damage spells can be erased by one cast if the timing lines up. Wild Rush (E) dashes Samira through an enemy and resets on champion kills, and Daredevil Impulse (passive) builds her combo and adds magic damage to her close-range attacks, while attacking an immobilized target dashes her into range. Inferno Trigger (R) shoots everyone around her. Honestly, it’s a lane decided by who reacts first to the other’s dive.
Xayah
Featherstorm (R) leaps Xayah into the air and makes her untargetable while she throws a fan of daggers. Kai’Sa’s Killer Instinct dash lands next to her, and Xayah is simply not there for a moment. Bladecaller (E) recalls every Feather she’s dropped, damaging and rooting enemies along the way, and the Feathers come from Double Daggers (Q), Featherstorm and Clean Cuts (passive), which also makes her attacks after an ability hit everything in their path. Deadly Plumage (W) adds Attack Speed, damage and Move Speed. Thing is, the root needs Feathers on the ground first, so Xayah sets up before Kai’Sa commits.
Varus
Varus out-ranges Kai’Sa, 575 against 525, and Piercing Arrow (Q) charges up for more range and damage, poke she can’t answer from outside Void Seeker range. Hail of Arrows (E) slows and reduces healing and regeneration on desecrated ground. The real answer is Chain of Corruption (R): a tendril that immobilizes the first champion hit and spreads to others nearby. A Kai’Sa who just dashed in with Killer Instinct is the first champion it hits. Blighted Quiver (W) adds magic damage and Blight, which his abilities detonate, and Living Vengeance (passive) boosts his damage after takedowns.
Jhin
Jhin’s 550 range edges hers, and Deadly Flourish (W) fires a single shot at huge range that roots the champion if Jhin, his allies or his traps recently hit them. Kai’Sa dashes in and gets rooted by the follow-up. Captive Audience (E) lotus traps are invisible, slow nearby enemies and then explode, so a Killer Instinct onto a trapped spot is costly. Dancing Grenade (Q) bounces between targets, Whisper (passive) crits on its fourth shot, and Curtain Call (R) fires four long-range shots that slow and deal execute damage. In practice, Jhin’s long-range root punishes every forward step she takes.
Caitlyn
650 attack range is the longest of the five, and Kai’Sa has to accept free hits every time she walks up to farm. Yordle Snap Trap (W) immobilizes a champion for 1.5 seconds and doubles Headshot’s range on that target, a nasty spot to land Killer Instinct in. 90 Caliber Net (E) slows Kai’Sa and pushes Caitlyn backward, out of the dive. Piltover Peacemaker (Q) is a revved-up shot through a line, and Ace in the Hole (R) finishes a low target from far away. To be fair, upgraded Supercharge’s Invisibility lets Kai’Sa slip through the traps sometimes.
How do you play the lane against Kai’Sa?
- Stay near minions against Icathian Rain. The missiles seek nearby targets, so an isolated champion takes all of them.
- Dodge Void Seeker. It’s her long-range poke and applies Plasma marks, on a 20 second cooldown at rank 1.
- Watch for Killer Instinct after Plasma stacks. She dashes near an enemy champion, so hold crowd control for the landing.
- Don’t let her stack Plasma freely. Her attacks build it, and allied crowd control on you helps her stack faster.
- Expect an Invisibility stealth once she’s upgraded Supercharge. Her items decide which spells are upgraded.
Which items counter Kai’Sa?
A mix, because Plasma deals magic damage and her attacks deal physical. Edge of Night gives 250 Health and a Spell Shield that can absorb Void Seeker, and Banshee’s Veil does the same for mages with 40 Magic Resist on top. Plated Steelcaps reduce damage from attacks, which covers the Supercharge Attack Speed window. Supercharge is an Attack Speed spell, and Frozen Heart’s aura (fewer attacks per second for champions near you) blunts it. Supports and mages can hold Zhonya’s Hourglass for 2.5 seconds of Stasis once Killer Instinct lands on them. Our items database lists the exact numbers.
When is Kai’Sa at her weakest?
Before her spells are upgraded. Second Skin upgrades Icathian Rain, Void Seeker and Supercharge as she buys items, and until then each spell is its plainer version. That early window is when lane bullies with range or crowd control should push hardest.
She’s also weak right after Killer Instinct. It’s her only dash, on a 130 second cooldown at rank 1, and it lands her next to an enemy champion. Can she get out? Only with Supercharge’s speed or Invisibility. Long story short, the moment she dives is the moment to punish her.

Her Void-themed cosmetics are on the Kai’Sa skins page, and the build for random games on one lane is in the Kai’Sa ARAM guide (one lane changes her priorities). Put simply, Kai’Sa counters break her missiles or catch her landing.
