Sona Counters: Who Beats Sona
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Sona counters are champions who jump on her before she scales, bust through her W shields, or strip the Crescendo stun off their teammates. Sona is a sustain enchanter with no dash (Song of Celerity gives speed, not a gap-closer) and one defensive ultimate on a long cooldown. The picks that wreck her force all-ins she can’t heal through.
We picked these based on how each kit answers Sona’s abilities in patch 26.21, and this is an editorial list built on ability interactions, not win-rate data.

Why is Sona hard to counter?
- Power Chord (passive): every few spell casts, Sona’s next attack deals bonus magic damage with an extra effect based on her last basic ability. She also permanently gains non-ultimate ability haste through Accelerando.
- Hymn of Valor (Q): sends bolts dealing magic damage to two nearby enemies, prioritizing champions and monsters. The aura grants allies bonus damage on their next attack.
- Aria of Perseverance (W): heals Sona and a nearby wounded ally. The aura gives allies a temporary shield.
- Song of Celerity (E): grants nearby allies bonus movement speed, with an aura for more.
- Crescendo (R): stuns enemy champions, forces them to dance, and deals magic damage. Cooldown starts at 140 seconds.
In practice, you trade into her and she heals it back. You back off and she pokes you again. So how do you win? Thing is, she has 550 range and zero mobility besides a movement speed buff. No dash. No blink. If you close the gap, she folds.
Which champions are the best Sona counters?
Blitzcrank
Rocket Grab (Q) pulls Sona into your team, and she has no dash to dodge it. Power Fist (E) pops her into the air once she arrives. And what if she tries to answer with Crescendo? Static Field (R) silences nearby enemies, shutting that down before the cast goes off. One hook into Power Fist kills her if the ADC follows up, even through her W heal.
Nautilus
Depth Charge (R) is point-and-click. Sona cannot dodge it with movement speed or outrun it once fired. It knocks her up and stuns her. Staggering Blow (passive) roots on first attack, and Dredge Line (Q) pulls both champions together, giving Nautilus three separate forms of crowd control before Sona even gets a chance to press R.
Milio
Breath of Life (R) removes all crowd control from allies in range. That guts Crescendo. It’s the one ability that makes Sona dangerous in teamfights. One well-timed Milio ult and her Crescendo stun does nothing. Cozy Campfire (W) also heals allies and increases their attack range, so he keeps up with her sustain and his ADC outranges hers on top of it.
Soraka
Equinox (E) silences all enemies inside its zone. Sona’s whole game is casting spells constantly to stack Power Chord and gain ability haste through Accelerando. Drop Equinox on her in a fight and she can’t cast Q, W, E, or R. If she stays when the zone expires, she’s rooted. Honestly, a silenced Sona is just an autoattacker at 550 range.
Rell
Shattering Strike (Q) stuns enemies in a line and breaks shields, that W aura shield Sona hands out? Gone. Break the Mold (passive) steals Armor and Magic Resist on every hit, so each trade in lane makes her a little squishier and the next all-in a little more dangerous. Then there’s Magnet Storm (R), which pulls nearby enemies toward Rell and keeps dragging them for a short while (not just a single pull). No enchanter wants to be in melee range of that.
How do you counter Sona in lane?
- Fight early. Before level 6, Sona has zero hard CC. Crescendo starts on a 140-second cooldown even once she gets it.
- Punish her positioning. Every time she steps forward for Hymn of Valor, she’s in hook or dash range. 550 range with no mobility means she pays for each Q she throws.
- Her W heals herself and one nearby wounded ally and gives a temporary shield, but it won’t save her from a committed all-in, so you’re better off going all the way in rather than short-trading into her sustain loop.
- Track Power Chord. After a few casts, her next auto deals bonus magic damage with an extra effect. Back off when you see it ready.
- Anti-heal helps. Executioner’s Calling or Oblivion Orb cost 800 gold each and apply 40% Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds. If you’re new to bot lane, our guide to LoL roles explains how the lane works.
Which items counter Sona?
You want two things against Sona: magic resist and Grievous Wounds. Executioner’s Calling (800 gold) and Oblivion Orb (800 gold) both apply 40% Wounds to champions, cutting Aria of Perseverance’s healing right away if you pick one up on your first back. For a completed item, Morellonomicon adds 75 AP, 350 Health, and 15 Ability Haste on top of the same Wounds passive.
Mercury’s Treads (1,250 gold) give 30% Tenacity and 20 Magic Resist, shortening Crescendo’s stun. Quicksilver Sash (1,300 gold) removes all crowd control except Airborne, letting you cleanse her ult entirely. The catch is timing: activate it after the stun lands, not before. Kaenic Rookern adds 80 Magic Resist and a magic shield after 15 seconds without taking magic damage, though Sona’s constant Q poke keeps breaking it in lane. Does Sona scale better than her counters?
Sure, her passive permanently stacks non-ultimate ability haste up to a cap (and beyond that cap, further successful casts reduce Crescendo’s remaining cooldown), and her auras affect all nearby allies. A 30-minute Sona is casting W every few seconds, healing herself and one wounded ally while shielding everyone nearby (and those cooldowns keep getting shorter thanks to Accelerando). Most of the picks above are early-game engagers whose job is to stomp the lane before she gets there.
Playing an enchanter into her? You won’t match her late sustain, but you don’t need to. Milio’s Breath of Life still cancels Crescendo at 40 minutes, and Soraka’s Equinox shuts her down just as hard late as it does at level 6. Browse more matchups in our champion guides, check the Sona skins page, or read the Sona ARAM guide if you play that mode.
The goal never changes. Whatever you pick from these sona counters, force a fight she can’t heal through, or make Crescendo worthless.
FAQ
Who counters Sona the most?
Blitzcrank. Rocket Grab pulls her in, Power Fist knocks her up, and Static Field silences her before she can cast Crescendo. She has no dash to dodge the hook.
Can Sona survive all-in engages?
Not really. Aria of Perseverance heals Sona and one nearby wounded ally and gives a temporary shield, but it won’t save her from a full Nautilus or Blitzcrank combo. Before level 6 she has no hard CC to peel for herself.
How do you reduce Sona’s healing?
Buy Grievous Wounds. Executioner’s Calling or Oblivion Orb cost 800 gold each and apply 40% Wounds for 3 seconds on champion damage.
What makes Sona weakest in lane?
No mobility. Song of Celerity gives movement speed but is not a dash. Any hook, pull, or gap-closer reaches her when she steps forward to poke with Hymn of Valor.
Is this list based on win rates?
No. We built this list on ability interactions in patch 26.21, not win-rate data.
