Thresh Counters: Who Beats Thresh
Updated for patch 26.20. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.
Thresh counters are supports who can block his hook, punish the dash that follows it, or save an ally he catches. Thresh is a support-tank whose whole game is Death Sentence: hook, pull, then lantern his team in. The best answers make that first hook pointless.
We picked these based on how each kit actually answers Thresh’s abilities. We don’t use win-rate data, so read the list as the reasoning behind each matchup.

Why is Thresh hard to counter?
- Damnation (passive): he collects souls from enemies who die near him, gaining Armor and Ability Power permanently.
- Death Sentence (Q): chains an enemy and pulls them toward him; a second cast pulls Thresh to the enemy.
- Dark Passage (W): a lantern that shields allies and lets them dash to Thresh.
- Flay (E): stronger attacks the longer he waits, and an active sweep that knocks enemies in a direction.
- The Box (R): walls that slow and damage enemies who break them.
Put simply, almost every Thresh play starts with a hook. Block it. Or survive it. Once you do, his lane loses most of its threat. Flay and The Box are follow-ups that only work on a target who’s already pulled in.
Which champions are the best Thresh counters?
Morgana
Black Shield (E) absorbs magic damage and disabling effects until it breaks. A shielded ally can’t be pulled in by Death Sentence, which is the single best answer to his hook.
Braum
Unbreakable (E) raises his shield in one direction and intercepts all projectiles. Death Sentence is thrown, so Braum can stand in front of his carry and catch it.
Sylas
Hijack (R) steals the enemy’s ultimate. In a mid or support matchup, taking The Box gives Sylas Thresh’s own zone control for a fight.
Zilean
Chronoshift (R) teleports an ally back in time if they take lethal damage (and only then, so timing it before a hook lands matters). A Thresh hook that would have killed the target turns into a wasted engage.
Soraka
Equinox (E) silences every enemy inside its zone. Those still inside when it ends get rooted. A Thresh standing in Equinox can’t cast his second Q or Flay to follow up.
How do you counter Thresh in lane?
- Stand behind minions. Death Sentence stops on the first enemy it hits, so minions protect you.
- Watch his Q cooldown. When the hook is down, he has far fewer ways to start a fight.
- Kill the lantern plan. Dark Passage lets his jungler dash in, so a lantern thrown toward a bush often means someone is coming.
- Don’t feed souls. Every enemy dying near him gives him permanent Armor and Ability Power.
Which items counter Thresh?
You’re not going to out-stat Thresh. The hook is what kills you, not his damage. Banshee’s Veil blocks the next enemy ability, which can be the hook. Quicksilver Sash and Mercurial Scimitar cleanse crowd control except airborne, so you can cleanse the hook’s crowd control. Mikael’s Blessing does the same thing from the support side. If your carry keeps getting caught, Locket of the Iron Solari at least gives them a shield to eat some of the burst. Compare them in our LoL items database, which lists the exact stats of each one for patch 26.20.
When is Thresh at his weakest?
When is the safest time to trade with him? While Death Sentence is on cooldown. Almost all of his engage starts with the hook, and without it he has to walk up to you through your minions and your support.
He is also weak in the first ten minutes, before his passive has collected many souls. Each soul adds permanent Armor and Ability Power, so the first levels are when he is easiest to bully (the opposite of how he feels at 30 minutes).
Does the lantern change that? Yes (in a way): it changes who arrives with him, and that matters more than any damage number in his kit. In practice, Dark Passage is his taxi: if the lantern flies toward fog, someone you can’t see is about to click it.
Is Thresh hard to play against for newer players?
Honestly, getting hooked is how most new bot laners learn this matchup. The thing is, his hook stops on the first enemy it hits, so standing behind your minions takes away most of his threat. If bot lane is still new to you, our guide to LoL roles breaks it down, his skins are on the Thresh skins page, and there’s a separate Thresh ARAM guide for that mode.
Whatever you pick, good Thresh counters share one goal: make his hook miss, or make him regret landing it.
