Shen Counters: Who Beats Shen

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Shen counters are champions who fight through Spirit’s Refuge, shrug off or cleanse the taunt from Shadow Dash, and punish him when Stand United pulls him out of lane. He is a melee Energy tank played top, so the picks that work either hit him with abilities instead of attacks or scale harder in a long duel.

We chose every pick in this Shen counters list by hand and judged each one on what a champion’s kit does against his abilities. We don’t use win-rate data. Honestly, I’d rather explain why a pick works than repeat whatever a stats site happens to be showing this week.

Shen counters: Shen, the Eye of Twilight, splash art

Why is Shen hard to counter?

  • Ki Barrier (passive): after casting a spell, Shen gets a shield, and affecting other champions reduces the cooldown of that shield.
  • Twilight Assault (Q): he recalls his spirit blade and attacks with it for damage based on your max health. The attacks are greatly empowered if the blade collides with an enemy champion, and collided enemies are slowed while running away from him.
  • Spirit’s Refuge (W): attacks that would hit Shen or his allies near the spirit blade are blocked.
  • Shadow Dash (E): a dash that taunts enemies in his path.
  • Stand United (R): shields a target allied champion, then teleports Shen to their location.

He runs on Energy rather than mana, Ki Barrier hands him a shield every time he casts, and Spirit’s Refuge blocks attacks that would hit him or his allies near the spirit blade. Is your damage mostly auto attacks? That W eats your whole trade, and then Shadow Dash taunts you into one you didn’t choose. Put simply, his kit tilts exchanges his way rather than bursting you, so the picks below have to get around that rather than out-damage it.

Which champions are the best Shen counters?

Olaf

Ragnarok (R) makes Olaf immune to disables for as long as he keeps attacking, and that includes the taunt from Shadow Dash. Undertow (Q) reduces the Armor and Move Speed of everything it passes through, while Reckless Swing (E) deals true damage, so a tank’s resistances don’t save Shen. Berserker Rage adds Life Steal based on missing Health, built for the long fights he likes.

Kennen

Spirit’s Refuge blocks attacks (attacks, and only attacks). Kennen’s damage comes from abilities, and Mark of the Storm stuns an enemy he hits three times with them, so Thundering Shuriken (Q) and Electrical Surge (W) keep working while the blade is up. He also fights from 550 range against Shen’s 125, and Lightning Rush (E) grants Move Speed when he enters lightning form, which helps him step off the line of Shadow Dash.

Darius

Apprehend (E) passively lets Darius’s physical damage ignore a percentage of his target’s Armor, and Noxian Guillotine (R) deals true damage that increases with each Hemorrhage stack. Decimate (Q) is an ability rather than an attack, and it heals him for enemy champions hit by the blade. Five Hemorrhage stacks, and he enrages for massive Attack Damage. Ki Barrier only delays that.

Mordekaiser

Mordekaiser’s ultimate (R) drags Shen into a different dimension with him and steals a portion of his stats. Stand United shields an ally and teleports Shen to them, but what happens when Mordekaiser pulls him into that dimension first? Shen goes nowhere. Obliterate (Q) deals increased damage when it hits a single enemy, and Indestructible (W) stores damage into a shield. He can consume it to heal.

Gwen

Hallowed Mist (W) lets only enemies who enter the mist target Gwen, so Shen has to come inside to fight her. Once he does, Snip Snip! (Q) deals true damage to units in the center and applies A Thousand Cuts, bonus magic damage based on the target’s health that also heals her. A Thousand Cuts deals bonus magic damage based on the target’s health. Building Health does not protect Shen.

How do you play against Shen in lane?

In practice, trade with abilities while his spirit blade is near him, and stay off the line of his dash. We picked the Shen counters above because their kits do that for you, but you can lane this way on anyone.

  • Don’t auto into Spirit’s Refuge. Attacks that would hit Shen or his allies near the spirit blade are blocked, so use abilities while it’s up and swing once it passes.
  • Watch where the blade sits. Twilight Assault is greatly empowered when the blade collides with an enemy champion, so standing on its path hands him the strong version.
  • Stand off the line of Shadow Dash. It taunts enemies in his path, which is a line. Step sideways rather than straight back, because backing off in a straight line just keeps you on it.
  • Push when his ultimate is up. Stand United teleports him to an ally, so a shoved wave is what he gives up if he leaves. The cooldown is 200 seconds at rank 1.
  • Don’t turn your back after a Q hit. Collided enemies are slowed while running away from Shen, so fight it out or wait for the slow to pass.

Which items counter Shen?

Mercury’s Treads (1250 gold) give 20 Magic Resist, 45 Move Speed and 30% Tenacity, which is the stat you want against the taunt from Shadow Dash. Quicksilver Sash (1300 gold) removes all crowd control debuffs except Airborne, and a taunt is not Airborne. Mercurial Scimitar (3200 gold) keeps that active and adds 50 Attack Damage, 35 Magic Resist and 10% Life Steal. Edge of Night (3000 gold) carries a Spell Shield that blocks the next enemy ability, so a predictable dash can hit nothing, and Banshee’s Veil does the same job for Kennen. Dead Man’s Plate reduces the effectiveness of slows by 15% through Unsinkable, which takes some bite out of Twilight Assault. With Wit’s End (2800 gold, bonus magic damage On-Hit) the catch is that on-hit damage rides on attacks, and attacks are exactly what Spirit’s Refuge blocks, so time your swings. If you want the complete numbers on any of these, the LoL items database has them.

When is Shen at his weakest?

Right after Shadow Dash misses. What does he do without it? The cooldown is 18 seconds at rank 1 and only drops to 10 at rank 5, and without it he has no way to make you stand still, which also means no easy setup for the empowered Twilight Assault. Spirit’s Refuge sits at 16 seconds at rank 1 (10 at rank 5), a long gap for an ability that only blocks attacks.

The other weak moment is when Stand United is down. Without it he’s a tank with Energy and a shield, and most of his pressure was the threat that he could leave at any second and show up on the other side of the map. The cooldown is 200 seconds at rank 1 and 160 at rank 3, and the side lane belongs to Shen counters while the ultimate is gone. Our guide to LoL roles goes into what a top laner with a teleport ultimate does to the rest of the map.

If you play him yourself, our Shen ARAM guide covers him on the Howling Abyss, and the Shen skins page lists his cosmetics. Our champion counter and build guides give other matchups the same treatment. Long story short, good Shen counters do their damage with abilities and carry something for the taunt. Then they shove the wave every time he presses R.

FAQ

Who counters Shen the most?

Olaf is probably the hardest of the Shen counters: Ragnarok makes him immune to disables while he keeps attacking, so Shadow Dash cannot taunt him. Kennen fights with abilities from 550 range, which Spirit’s Refuge does not block. Mordekaiser’s ultimate isolates Shen and steals his stats.

How do you deal with Shen’s W, Spirit’s Refuge?

Use abilities instead of attacks while it is active. Spirit’s Refuge only blocks attacks that would hit Shen or his allies near the spirit blade, so ability damage still lands.

Can you cleanse Shen’s taunt?

Yes. The taunt from Shadow Dash is not Airborne, and Airborne is the one crowd control debuff that Quicksilver Sash and Mercurial Scimitar leave in place when they strip everything else. Mercury’s Treads add 30% Tenacity.

What does Shen’s ultimate do?

Stand United shields a target allied champion from incoming damage, then teleports Shen to their location soon after. Its cooldown is 200, 180 and 160 seconds by rank.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. The Shen counters here were picked by hand for patch 26.21, judged on how their abilities line up against his. We don’t use win-rate data.
