Bramble Vest is the anti-healing Armor component in League of Legends: 30 Armor for 800 gold in patch 26.21, plus the Thorns passive, which deals magic damage back to anyone who hits you with an attack and applies 40% Wounds for 3 seconds if the attacker is a champion. It is two Cloth Armors with a 200 gold combine fee, and it builds into Thornmail alone.

What does Bramble Vest do?

Two things, and the second is the one that changes lanes. 30 Armor makes physical attacks hurt less, and Thorns punishes the attacker twice: a small burst of magic damage on every attack that lands on you, and a 40% reduction to their healing for 3 seconds.

Riot’s data text does not state the return damage, only that it is magic damage, and the shop tooltip shows a flat amount that scales with your bonus Armor, so on a tank it grows as the build does. The Wounds half is why the item is so often bought at nine minutes against a specific opponent. Thing is, sustain decides a lot of top lane matchups, and a Bramble Vest against an Aatrox, a Fiora, a Warwick or a Vladimir who autos you turns their healing from a problem into a nuisance for the price of two Cloth Armors (the enemy knows it too, and good players stop trading into it). Does it work against spell healing? Only if the healer also attacks you, since the Wounds come from Thorns, and Thorns triggers on attacks, not abilities.

Is Bramble Vest gold efficient?

On Armor alone, no: 75%. 30 Armor is worth 600 gold at 20 gold per point, so the remaining 200 gold is what you pay for Thorns.

That is cheap for what the passive does in the right matchup and overpriced in the wrong one, which is the whole story of the item. Honestly, a Bramble Vest into a mage top laner is a 800 gold Chain Vest with worse stats; a Bramble Vest into a healing auto-attacker is the best value buy in the game at that moment. The 200 gold combine fee is small, and the sell price is 560 gold, so a Vest bought early and sold late costs you very little even if the matchup changes.

What does it build into?

One item: Thornmail, which adds Health and more Armor and keeps the same Thorns, with the return damage and Wounds now applying more widely in fights.

So the Vest is a half-commitment, and that is fine, because it is one of the few components strong enough to sit in an inventory for twenty minutes before you finish it. No rush. Put simply, many tanks buy the Vest for the lane and finish the Thornmail third or fourth when the enemy marksman starts to matter, and waiting costs nothing (the Vest keeps doing its job the whole time). The LoL items database has the finished item’s current price.

Who buys it?

Tanks and bruisers facing sustain from auto attacks: Malphite, Ornn, Sion, Shen, Poppy and Tahm Kench into Aatrox, Fiora, Irelia, Warwick, Yone, Trundle and the like. Supports take it against healing marksmen and enchanter heals when the marksman is the one attacking them. Junglers buy it against a Warwick or a Master Yi who keeps diving them. Who skips it? Anyone facing magic damage, where the Armor does nothing, and anyone facing an enemy who heals through spells and never attacks, like a Soraka sitting at the back.

One habit from higher ranks worth copying: buy it on the recall after the enemy shows their sustain item, not before. A Cloth Armor first keeps the option open for 300 gold.

How has Bramble Vest changed over the patches?

Ten entries since it appeared in patch 7.14, most of them rewording Thorns as Riot adjusted how Grievous Wounds works across the game:

  • Patch 7.19: Cost 900 → 1000 gold, effect text changed.
  • Patch 10.23: Cost 1000 → 800 gold, with the 2021 item overhaul.
  • Patch 11.11: Armor 35 → 30.
  • Patches 7.24, 9.8, 11.1, 11.12, 12.10, 12.11 and 13.3: Effect text changed.

For what it’s worth, the 12.10 and 12.11 entries are the durability update, when Riot reworked every Grievous Wounds source and the Vest’s Wounds settled at the 40% it applies today (a few patches earlier the number had been higher). Funny enough, the item has lost two hundred gold of price and 5 Armor since 2017 and players buy it more now than then, because healing in the game has only gone up.

When should you buy it?

On the recall where the enemy who heals through attacks has started winning trades, usually the first or second back in top lane. Before that, a Cloth Armor; after that, the finished Thornmail only when the enemy team has a marksman worth punishing. Not sure whether your lane opponent is the kind that this item answers? The guide to LoL roles covers the top lane fighters and divers who rely on healing, and Bramble Vest is the standard answer to nearly all of them.

FAQ

How much does Bramble Vest cost?

800 gold in patch 26.21: two Cloth Armors plus a 200 gold combine fee. It sells for 560 gold.

What stats does it give?

30 Armor, plus the Thorns passive.

How does Thorns work?

When an attack hits you, the attacker takes magic damage, and if they are a champion they also receive 40% Wounds for 3 seconds, reducing their healing.

Does it reduce healing from spells?

Only on champions who hit you with attacks, because Thorns triggers on attacks. A healer who never attacks you is not affected.

What does it build into?

Thornmail only.

Can you hold it without upgrading?

Yes, and many tanks do. The Armor and Thorns keep working on their own, so the Thornmail upgrade can wait for the third or fourth item slot.
