We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.
World Atlas is the support starting item in League of Legends: 400 gold in patch 26.21, bought before the first wave by whoever plays support, and never finished the normal way. Instead it runs a quest. Earn enough gold through it and it becomes Runic Compass, then Bounty of Worlds, and finally one of five free upgrades (Bloodsong, Celestial Opposition, Dream Maker, Zaz’Zak’s Realmspike or Solstice Sleigh). Riot’s data files list no stats or passive text for the Atlas itself in this patch, only its price, its 160 gold sell value and the maps it appears on.
What does World Atlas do?
It pays a support for playing support. The quest mechanic, which Riot’s text spells out on the Runic Compass stage, is called Shared Riches: while you are near an ally champion, damaging enemy champions or killing minions earns you gold from the item, and once the counter fills, the item transforms.
Two transformations, then a choice. The Atlas becomes the Compass, the Compass becomes the Bounty of Worlds, and the Bounty offers the five finished upgrades for free. Each stage also carries a ward active that places an invisible Stealth Ward, which is why supports stopped buying a separate warding item when this line arrived. Can you rush the quest by farming? Not really; the gold comes from poking champions and from being next to your laner while they last hit, and a support who takes the minions for themselves is starving the carry for a slightly faster Compass, which no marksman will thank you for. Thing is, the design is built so that a support doing the job well completes the quest somewhere in the middle of the laning phase without thinking about it.
Is World Atlas gold efficient?
There is no figure to give. Our efficiency numbers come from the stats Riot lists for each item, and for the Atlas in patch 26.21 that list is empty, so the usual calculation cannot run (the Bounty of Worlds stage, by contrast, lists Health, regen and income in the data, and its finished forms are among the most efficient items in the game).
Put simply, the Atlas is a 400 gold ticket. What you are buying is the quest and the income it leads to, plus free wards for the whole match, and judged that way it is the best purchase a support makes all game. Honestly, nobody who has played the role since 2024 would consider starting with anything else.
What does it build into?
Nothing you can buy. The shop shows no recipe out of the Atlas because the upgrades happen through the quest, not through gold, so the build tree on this page is empty on purpose. The finished forms are the five items above: Bloodsong for supports who attack between spells, Celestial Opposition for tanks who get hit first, Dream Maker for enchanters, Zaz’Zak’s Realmspike for poke mages and Solstice Sleigh for champions with frequent slows and roots. Current numbers for all five sit in the LoL items database.
The choice is permanent for the match. Pick in champion select, in your head, not under pressure at the shop (plenty of people click the wrong one when the quest pops mid-fight).
Who buys it?
Every support, every game, on the Rift. Riot’s data marks the Atlas as available on the Rift and on the Swiftplay map but not in ARAM, so you will not see it on the Howling Abyss. Who else might buy it? Nobody should. The game applies penalties to non-supports who try to use the quest for extra income, and a second Atlas on a team is a wasted 400 gold at best. Funny enough, the item still gets bought by mistake by new players who see the low price and the word “gold” in the tooltip, which is worth a friendly word in chat rather than a report.
How has World Atlas changed over the patches?
The data shows one entry: added in patch 14.1, when it replaced the older support starting items as part of that season’s item update. No price change since. The upgrades it leads to have moved more, in particular the income on the five finished forms, which went up at the start of the 2026 season, but the Atlas itself has sat at 400 gold with a 160 gold sell price for its entire life. For what it’s worth, that stability is the point: it is the one purchase in a support’s game that never needs a second thought.
When should you buy it?
First shop, no exceptions. Spend the rest of the starting gold on potions and a ward if you have room. Buying it later is possible but wastes quest progress, since every minute without it is gold the Shared Riches counter did not collect. If you are new to the position and unsure what the quest expects of you in lane, the guide to LoL roles explains the support job in plain terms, and World Atlas is the item that pays you for doing it.
FAQ
How much does World Atlas cost?
400 gold in patch 26.21. It sells for 160 gold.
What stats does it give?
Riot’s data files list no stats for the Atlas in this patch. Its value is the quest, the gold income and the ward active on its later forms.
How does the quest work?
While near an ally champion, damaging enemy champions or killing minions earns gold from the item. When enough is earned, it transforms into Runic Compass and later Bounty of Worlds, which offers five free upgrades.
Which items does it turn into?
Bloodsong, Celestial Opposition, Dream Maker, Zaz’Zak’s Realmspike or Solstice Sleigh, chosen once per game.
Can you buy it in ARAM?
No. The data marks it as available on Summoner’s Rift and Swiftplay only.
Can a non-support buy it?
It can be bought, but the game penalises players using the quest outside the support role, so it is only worth it for the one support on the team.
