Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health | 200 | 2.67 g | 533 g |
| Base Health Regen % | 75 | 3 g | 225 g |
| Base Mana Regen % | 75 | 4 g | 300 g |
| Total stat value | 1058 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 1058 ÷ 400 = 265%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted, and neither are Gold Per 10 Seconds (no basic item sells this stat alone).

Celestial Opposition is the World Atlas upgrade built for tank supports in League of Legends, patch 26.21. Its stat block matches the other four World Atlas upgrades, 200 Health, 9 gold per 10 seconds and 75% Base Health and Mana Regen, and its passive, Blessing of the Mountain, cuts the damage you take from champions for 2 seconds after a champion first hits you, then slows everyone nearby by 50% for 1.5 seconds when the reduction ends. The 4-charge ward active comes with it. Total spend: the 400 gold Atlas, nothing after.
What does Celestial Opposition do?
It makes the first few seconds of a fight safer for the person who starts it. Take damage from an enemy champion and the item immediately reduces every further champion hit on you for 2 seconds; when the window closes, a 50% slow pulses out to nearby enemies for 1.5 seconds.
How much damage does it block? Riot’s text does not say, and the in-game tooltip shows a flat amount per hit that grows with level, so think of it as a short, repeatable shield rather than a percentage. The slow is the half people forget. A Leona who dives in, eats the enemy’s first rotation and then watches them try to walk away at half speed has just set up her marksman’s follow-up, and that is the item working as intended. The catch is the cooldown, which the text also leaves out: the blessing does not come back for every skirmish, so the trigger needs to be the engage you meant, not a stray poke at the river (a Nautilus hit by a Caitlyn trap under tower has wasted it, and that happens more than anyone admits).
Is Celestial Opposition gold efficient?
On raw stats, 265%: 200 Health, 75% Base Health Regen and 75% Base Mana Regen are worth 1,058 gold against 400 gold paid.
Add the income and the passive and the item is worth several thousand gold over a game, which is true of every quest upgrade and is why no support skips the Atlas. Put simply, efficiency is not a reason to pick this one over Bloodsong or Solstice Sleigh, since they share the identical number. The only reason is the passive, and the passive asks one question: are you the champion who gets hit first?
How do you unlock it?
The World Atlas quest. You start with the Atlas, you earn quest gold by poking champions and standing next to your laner’s last hits, and once the bar fills the shop offers five upgrades for free. It is the one with the shield-and-mountain icon. Choose it and the item is yours for the rest of the match, with no option to switch; nothing builds into it, nothing builds from it, and the 160 gold sell price is a number you will never see.
Which supports should pick it?
Engage tanks and anyone who plans to stand between the enemy and their carry: Leona, Nautilus, Alistar, Braum, Taric, Rell, Maokai, Thresh when played as the front line rather than as a hook-and-retreat support, and Poppy or Shen in the role. Rakan is a borderline case, since his engage is a dash in and a dash out and he rarely stays long enough for the slow to matter (Solstice Sleigh often suits him better for the chase speed). Who should never take it? Enchanters, who are not supposed to be taking champion damage at all, and poke mages, whose whole plan is to avoid it.
To be fair, Bloodsong tempts a lot of tank players because it adds damage, and a Leona with Spellblade does hit harder. In practice the question is what loses you the fight more often, doing slightly less damage or dying in the first three seconds of the dive, and for most tank supports below Diamond it is the second one. Look, the slow also lands on everyone near you, which in a close dive is the whole enemy team.
How has Celestial Opposition changed over the patches?
Three recorded changes since it shipped in patch 14.1 with the quest line:
- Patches 14.2 and 14.21: Effect text changed, with the damage reduction values and the slow wording adjusted.
- Patch 26.1: Gold Per 10 Seconds moved from 5 to 9, the income increase applied to all five quest items that patch.
Honestly, that is the whole record. No stat has shifted since launch, and the passive got two passes in its first year before Riot left it as it is now. Real talk, the lack of nerfs tells you the item is strong in a quiet way rather than a loud one: it rarely wins a fight by itself, it stops fights from being lost in the first exchange. The LoL items database has the other four upgrades alongside it for comparison.
When should you choose it?
At quest completion on any champion whose plan is to engage or body-block, and ideally you knew that in champion select. Not sure whether your pick is a tank support or an enchanter with a stun? The champion pages cover each kit in detail, and the guide to LoL roles explains what the front line is supposed to do for a team, which is the frame that makes Celestial Opposition the clear answer for some supports and a mistake for others.
FAQ
How much does Celestial Opposition cost?
Nothing on top of the 400 gold World Atlas. It is a free quest upgrade, and it sells for 160 gold.
What stats does it give?
200 Health and 9 gold per 10 seconds, along with 75% Base Health Regen and 75% Base Mana Regen.
How does Blessing of the Mountain work?
After a champion damages you, incoming champion damage is reduced for 2 seconds. When that ends, enemies near you are slowed by 50% for 1.5 seconds.
Does the slow trigger if the reduction is not used up?
Yes. The slow fires when the 2 second window ends, regardless of how much damage you took during it.
Does it come with wards?
Yes. The active carries 4 charges of invisible Stealth Wards.
Can you switch to Bloodsong later?
No. The upgrade choice is permanent for that game.
