Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ability Power | 40 | 20 g | 800 g |
| Armor | 25 | 20 g | 500 g |
| Total stat value | 1300 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 1300 ÷ 1600 = 81%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted.

Seeker’s Armguard is the mage defensive component in League of Legends: 40 Ability Power and 25 Armor for 1,600 gold in patch 26.21, plus Time Stop, a single-use active that puts you in stasis for 2.5 seconds. Two Amplifying Tomes and a Cloth Armor make it, and the only item it builds into is Zhonya’s Hourglass, which gives the same stasis on a cooldown instead of once.
What does Seeker’s Armguard do?
Stats first: 40 Ability Power and 25 Armor, a reasonable mid-game pairing for a mage facing physical damage. Then the active, Time Stop, which is the reason anyone buys it early.
Stasis means nothing can damage, target or move you for 2.5 seconds, and you cannot act either. Untouchable, but frozen. One use, and then the active is gone while the stats stay. That single use is worth more than it sounds, because the moment a mid laner finishes the Armguard the enemy Zed loses the guaranteed kill he was planning around his ultimate, and he knows it; the item changes how both players approach the lane before anyone presses it (a good assassin will try to bait the stasis out with a fake engage). Should you press it early to survive a gank, or save it for the ultimate? Save it, almost always, unless pressing it now is the difference between living and dying, since the whole point is to hold the one answer the enemy has to play around.
Is Seeker’s Armguard gold efficient?
Not on stats: 81%. The 40 Ability Power is worth 800 gold at 20 gold per point and the 25 Armor 500 gold, which comes to 1,300 gold of stats on a 1,600 gold item.
The missing 300 gold is the price of one stasis, and whether that is a bargain depends entirely on the game. Thing is, against a team with no burst you are overpaying for a Tome and a Cloth Armor, while against a Zed, a Rengar or a fed Kha'Zix it is the cheapest way to not die that the shop sells. The 500 gold combine cost is where the premium lives, since the three components add up to 1,100 gold. The sell price is 640 gold, low for an epic item, so a wasted Armguard is a real loss.
What does it build into?
One item: Zhonya’s Hourglass, which turns the single-use stasis into a repeatable active on a cooldown and adds more Ability Power and Armor on top.
So the component is not a flexible buy; it is a down payment on a Zhonya’s, and the only question is how early you make it. In practice a mid laner facing an assassin buys the Armguard on the second recall and sits on it, finishing the Hourglass second or third, while a mage in a safe matchup skips the component entirely and builds the Hourglass later from scratch. The LoL items database has the current price of the finished item.
Who buys it?
Mages and AP assassins facing a diver: Syndra into Zed, Orianna into Talon, Lux into Rengar, and any AP champion whose teamfight job is to stand still and channel, like Katarina or Fiddlesticks. Short list, big matchups. Enchanters rarely do, since their gold goes to support items. Who else? AP junglers who expect to be the first target in fights (Lillia, Evelynn), and occasionally a mage top laner into a physical damage bruiser, where the Armor matters as much as the active.
The habit worth copying from higher ranks is to buy it only when the threat is real. Honestly, a reflex Armguard against a Twisted Fate wastes 300 gold that an Amplifying Tome toward Luden’s would have used better, and in that matchup the stats alone are not worth the slot.
How has Seeker’s Armguard changed over the patches?
The current item is patch 14.1 remaking an older one. In Riot’s data the entry begins in patch 7.22 as the Stopwatch, the plain single-use stasis with no stats, and the history reads:
- Patch 10.4: Cost 600 → 650 gold.
- Patch 12.17: Cost 650 → 750 gold.
- Patch 14.1: Renamed from Stopwatch to Seeker’s Armguard, stats added, cost 750 → 1,600 gold.
- Patch 14.19: Ability Power 45 → 40.
Put simply, Riot folded the stat-less Stopwatch and the old Armguard into one component, so the single-use stasis now comes with real stats attached and costs more than twice what the Stopwatch did. For what it’s worth, the 14.19 nerf took 5 Ability Power off, which says the merged item was slightly too good as a second-recall buy.
When should you buy it?
On the recall where the enemy assassin hits level six, if you can afford it, or one recall later if you cannot. The order inside the item matters too: the two Amplifying Tomes first, since they feed any mage item if the threat disappears, and the Cloth Armor last. And if you are still working out whether assassins will target your champion, the guide to LoL roles explains what mid lane mages are up against, and Seeker’s Armguard is the item most of them reach for when the answer is an assassin.
