We compare cost and stats patch by patch in Riot's Data Dragon files. "Effect text changed" means the passive or active wording changed in that patch.
Gunmetal Greaves is the tier-three upgrade of Berserker’s Greaves in League of Legends, worth 1,100 gold: 45% Attack Speed, 45 Move Speed and 5% Life Steal in patch 26.21. It has no passive or active, just stats, which makes it the plain upgrade path for marksmen and other auto-attack champions.
What do Gunmetal Greaves give?
Stats and nothing else. More Attack Speed than Berserker’s Greaves, the same flat Move Speed as other boots of this tier, and a bit of Life Steal on top.
No passive means nothing to track or time. You buy the upgrade and every auto attack lands faster, with a small heal attached. Is that boring? Maybe. But for a marksman whose whole game is hitting things, Attack Speed and Life Steal are exactly the stats that matter, and honestly, an upgrade that adds them without costing extra gold is hard to argue with (well, as long as you wanted Berserker’s in the first place).
Are they gold efficient?
Hugely, at 176%. The three stats are worth 1,933 gold against a 1,100 gold value.
Attack Speed is the biggest share: 45% at 25 gold per 1% makes 1,125 gold. Move Speed adds 540 gold (45 at 12 each), and Life Steal adds 268 gold at 53.57 per 1%. Few items in the game come close to that ratio, and none of the legendary items marksmen buy in their core builds do. Then again, it’s an upgrade, not a purchase, so efficiency here mostly confirms you should take it.
How do you get the upgrade?
From Berserker’s Greaves, the tier-two Attack Speed boots. Riot’s item data lists Berserker’s as the only component and no extra combine cost, so the value stays at 1,100 gold, and selling returns 770 gold. The item data doesn’t describe how the upgrade unlocks during a match; the shop in the client shows it.
What was this item before?
Zephyr. For years, ID 3172 was a full-price legendary item with Attack Damage, Attack Speed and Tenacity. The 2025 season turned it into boots, and Riot has tuned it since:
- Patch 25.S1.1: renamed from Zephyr to its current name, value 3,100 → 1,850 gold, Attack Speed 45% → 40%, Move Speed 45 → 50.
- 25.09 lowered the value to 1,600 gold.
- Patch 26.1: value 1,600 → 1,100 gold, Life Steal 5% added, Move Speed 50 → 45.
- Patch 26.16: Attack Speed 40% → 45%.
Patch 26.16 is the most recent buff, giving back the Attack Speed that the boots version lost at launch. The Zephyr entries stay in the table above (the ID is shared, so its whole history is attached). Our LoL items database lets you check the other tier-three boots the same way.
Who should buy Gunmetal Greaves?
Marksmen, mostly. Who else? Any champion that went Berserker’s Greaves at tier two: on-hit fighters, Attack Speed junglers, some Ability Power champions who rely on autos. The upgrade simply extends that choice into the late game, when boots have long stopped being the main topic of anyone’s shopping trip.
To be fair, the decision happens earlier. Put simply, tier two is where you choose. If Berserker’s Greaves were the right tier-two boots, there’s little reason not to take the upgrade; if you needed Armor or Magic Resist from boots, you would have bought those instead. Our guide to LoL roles covers the bot lane carry position where Gunmetal Greaves show up most.
