Gold efficiency
| Stat | Amount | Gold per point | Gold value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ability Power | 90 | 20 g | 1800 g |
| Mana | 600 | 1 g | 600 g |
| Ability Haste | 15 | 50 g | 750 g |
| Total stat value | 3150 g |
Gold efficiency = stat value ÷ item cost = 3150 ÷ 2700 = 117%. The gold per point comes from basic items of the same patch (for example, Long Sword: 35 g per Attack Damage). Passives and actives are not counted.

Malignance is a 2,700 gold mage item in League of Legends for champions whose ultimate does a lot of the work: 90 Ability Power, 600 Mana and 15 Ability Haste in patch 26.21. Scorn adds 20 Ultimate Ability Haste, and Hatefog makes your ultimate burn the ground under enemy champions for 3 seconds, dealing magic damage and lowering their Magic Resist.
What do Scorn and Hatefog do?
Scorn is the cooldown part (and the reason ultimate-heavy mages look at this item first): 20 Ability Haste that applies only to your ultimate, so R comes back noticeably sooner.
Hatefog is the payoff. When your ultimate damages an enemy champion, the ground beneath them burns for 3 seconds. Anyone standing in it takes magic damage every second and has their Magic Resist reduced, which means the rest of your spells (and your teammates’ magic damage) hit harder while the fog lasts. Riot’s data text gives neither the damage nor the size of the shred, so the tooltip in the client is the place to check both.
Put the two together and a champion with a damaging, short-cooldown ultimate gets a burst of extra damage much more often. And a long, once-per-fight ultimate? Then you get the stats and an occasional Hatefog, nothing more.
Is Malignance gold efficient?
Yes, at 117%, before either passive counts. The three stats are worth 3,150 gold for a 2,700 gold item.
The split: 90 Ability Power gives 1,800 gold at 20 per point, 600 Mana gives 600 at 1 per point, and 15 Ability Haste gives 750 at 50 per point. That’s a 450 gold surplus on stats alone. Honestly, the Ultimate Haste is the stat most buyers want, and no basic item sells it, so the real value sits even higher than the table says.
What’s in the recipe?
Only two parts go in: Lost Chapter for 1,200 gold and Blasting Wand for 850, then a 650 gold combine. Funny enough, that’s the same pair as Actualizer, so a mage can hold both parts and choose between an ultimate-focused item and a burst active late in the decision. Lost Chapter first fixes Mana problems in lane.
No further upgrade exists.
Why does its history start in 2018?
The item number used to belong to Space Knight’s Vow, a mode-specific item, until patch 14.1 renamed it Malignance and set the price at 2,800 gold. The changes since then:
- Patch 14.3: cost 2,800 → 2,700 gold, effect text changed.
- Patch 14.4: Ability Haste 20 → 25.
- Patch 14.19: Ability Haste 25 → 15, Ability Power 80 → 85.
- Patch 25.10: Ability Power 85 → 90.
So the item has shifted from haste toward raw Ability Power over its short life. To be fair, the Ultimate Haste from Scorn makes up for some of the lost general haste on champions who rely on R.
Who should build Malignance?
Mages and AP champions with a damaging ultimate on a reasonable cooldown, especially ones who cast it in every fight. Buy it early.
Who gains less? Champions whose ultimate doesn’t deal damage (Hatefog needs the ultimate to damage a champion), and those with very long ultimate cooldowns. Fighters with an important ultimate have a physical-damage cousin in Experimental Hexplate. Look, if your R decides your fights and hits enemy champions, Malignance makes you cast it more often and makes each cast hurt more.
