Gragas ARAM Build and Guide
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.
A Gragas ARAM build goes full Ability Power for barrel burst: Malignance for more casks, Luden’s Echo and Rabadon’s Deathcap for damage, and Banshee’s Veil to survive the slam. ARAM changes only one number for him, damage taken at 95%, and Drunken Rage already makes him sturdier than he looks.
The list follows from his patch 26.21 kit and the item text, with no win-rate sources involved.

What is Gragas’s ARAM balance change?
| ARAM modifier | Gragas |
|---|---|
| Damage taken | 95% |
Honestly, just the one. He takes 95% damage, and everything else, damage dealt included, stays at the default. It’s a small cushion, but it stacks with Drunken Rage’s damage reduction, so an AP Gragas who dives with Body Slam can afford a little more than other mages. Riot didn’t touch his damage at all (a quiet vote of confidence, if you think about it). That tells you most of his ARAM strength comes from the kit itself.
How does Gragas fit the Howling Abyss?
Riot’s patch 26.21 data on his kit:
- Happy Hour (passive): heals periodically on skill use.
- Barrel Roll (Q): a cask that grows stronger before exploding (on command or after 4 seconds) and slows enemies hit. Cooldown 10/9/8/7/6.
- Drunken Rage (W): drinks for 1 second, then reduces damage taken and adds area magic damage to his next attack. Cooldown 5.
- Body Slam (E): a charge into the first enemy unit that damages and stuns nearby enemies. Cooldown 14/13.5/13/12.5/12.
- Explosive Cask (R): damages and knocks back everyone in the blast. Cooldown 100/85/70.
Thing is, narrow lanes make Explosive Cask a weapon. The enemy team stands close together, so one cask can push three or four of them in the same direction, either away from your carry or right into your team. Barrel Roll hits groups too, and it grows stronger the longer it sits before exploding. Body Slam is the tricky one. It stops at the first enemy unit, and ARAM minion waves get in the way constantly, so the slam works best from the side of the wave. What about sustain? Happy Hour heals him on every skill, and with no recall that’s worth more than it sounds.
Which items fit an AP Gragas on the Abyss?
Ability Power, ultimate haste, and one spell shield. Four items and boots.
Malignance first. Scorn adds 20 Ultimate Ability Haste, so Explosive Cask comes back more often, and Hatefog burns the ground under any champion hit by his ultimate for 3 seconds, dealing magic damage and lowering their Magic Resist. A cask that knocks a group back also leaves them standing in fire. It brings 90 Ability Power and 600 Mana.
Luden’s Echo second. Echo fires 6 bolts of bonus magic damage at the target and nearby enemies whenever a damaging ability lands, and on a narrow lane the “nearby enemies” part is rarely empty. Barrel Roll into Echo is a lot of area damage for one button.
Rabadon’s Deathcap third. Its Magical Opus passive bumps total Ability Power by 30%, and every one of his abilities scales with it. It’s the item that turns Barrel Roll from a slow into a kill.
Banshee’s Veil last. Annul blocks the next enemy ability, which covers the moment after Body Slam when he’s standing in the middle of their team. 105 Ability Power and 40 Magic Resist round it out. Ionian Boots of Lucidity add 10 Ability Haste plus summoner spell haste.
How should you play Gragas in ARAM fights?
- Slam from the side of the wave. Body Slam stops at the first enemy unit, minions included.
- Let Barrel Roll charge. It explodes harder the longer it waits, up to 4 seconds.
- Cask enemies into your team. Explosive Cask knocks them away from the blast, so aim behind them.
- Drink before you dive. Drunken Rage reduces damage taken after the 1 second drink.
- Keep casting for Happy Hour. Skills heal him periodically, his only sustain besides relics.
How do shopping and Mark work for Gragas?
He’ll never recall. His gold goes into Malignance parts on every fountain trip until it’s done (no partial credit for components on Scorn). Health relics matter for a mage-diver, though Happy Hour makes him less dependent on them than most (sure, still grab one before a big fight).
Spells lock in the lobby. A Mark hit lets the thrower jump to the target, and on Gragas that’s a second engage after Body Slam, which helps when minions block the slam. In practice, Flash plus Explosive Cask is the more famous play: flash behind a target, cask them into your team. Which is better? Flash, most games, because it works without a skillshot landing first.
Is Gragas good in ARAM?
Yes. Damage taken at 95% plus Drunken Rage makes an AP diver unusually sturdy, and a narrow lane turns Explosive Cask into a team-fight decider. Minions are his main obstacle. Body Slam needs a clear path, and ARAM waves rarely give one.
Junglers who handle him well are covered in our Gragas counters guide. Full item stats sit in the LoL item database, the roles guide covers his jungle and mid jobs, and his skins are on the Gragas skins page.
Put simply, the Gragas ARAM build is Malignance, Luden’s Echo, Rabadon’s Deathcap and Banshee’s Veil with Ionian Boots of Lucidity, and the plan is to charge the barrel, slam from the side, and cask the group into your team.
FAQ
Does Gragas get ARAM changes?
One: damage taken is 95% in the Wiki’s patch 26.21 data. His damage dealt is unchanged.
What is the best Gragas ARAM build?
An AP path: Malignance, Luden’s Echo, Rabadon’s Deathcap and Banshee’s Veil, with Ionian Boots of Lucidity.
Why build Malignance on Gragas?
Scorn adds Ultimate Ability Haste for more Explosive Casks, and Hatefog burns the ground under champions his ultimate hits.
Why does Body Slam miss in ARAM?
It collides with the first enemy unit it meets, and minion waves often get in the way on the narrow lane.
How was this Gragas build chosen?
From his patch 26.21 kit and item text: area skills that scale with Ability Power and an ultimate worth casting often. No win-rate data was used.
