Jarvan IV ARAM Build and Guide
Updated for patch 26.21. Ability text is from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers are from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.
A Jarvan IV ARAM build is a bruiser path: Black Cleaver to stack Armor shred on top of Dragon Strike, Experimental Hexplate for more Cataclysms, then Sterak’s Gage and Death’s Dance. His ARAM entries are 100% damage dealt and 100% damage taken, so nothing changes from Summoner’s Rift.
The items follow his patch 26.21 ability text and each item’s own description; win rates played no part.

Is Jarvan IV changed in ARAM?
| ARAM modifier | Jarvan IV |
|---|---|
| Damage dealt | 100% |
| Damage taken | 100% |
Riot left the Demacian prince alone. Both lines read 100%, and in ARAM data that value means no adjustment. He plays with full numbers. That’s a little surprising for a champion whose ult builds walls in a lane that’s already narrow (to be fair, Cataclysm only traps the people near the landing, so Riot apparently never saw a reason to step in).
How does Jarvan IV’s kit play on the Howling Abyss?
From Riot’s patch 26.21 data:
- Martial Cadence (passive): the first attack on an enemy adds physical damage based on their current Health; the same enemy can’t be hit by it again for a few seconds.
- Dragon Strike (Q): a lance thrust for physical damage that lowers Armor, and if it reaches his flag, he’s pulled to it and knocks up enemies on the way. Cooldown 10/9/8/7/6.
- Golden Aegis (W): shields Jarvan and slows enemies around him. Cooldown 9.
- Demacian Standard (E): bonus Attack Speed passively; the flag deals magic damage on impact and speeds up nearby allies’ attacks. Cooldown 12/11.5/11/10.5/10.
- Cataclysm (R): a leap onto a target that damages nearby enemies and raises terrain in a ring around them. Cooldown 120/105/90.
One lane changes how the combo lands. On the Rift, people dodge the flag by walking into side brush or jungle paths; on the Howling Abyss, the enemy team clumps in a strip a few champions wide, so a flag thrown behind the front line plus Dragon Strike can knock up two or three of them at once. Cataclysm is the same story. Land it on a carry next to their tank and you’ve walled in both, cutting them off from everyone else. The real downside? A 120-second ult with no recall to reset fights means you’ll get only a few per game unless you build haste for it.
What is the best Jarvan IV ARAM build?
Real talk, the order matters more than the exact items: Armor shred first, ult haste second, and the survival pieces once he’s diving into five people (four items and boots in total).
Black Cleaver goes first. Dragon Strike already lowers Armor, and Carve stacks another 6% per physical hit for 6 seconds, up to 5 times, so the whole team’s AD hits harder on whoever he’s been poking. Fervor adds Move Speed after physical damage. Then Experimental Hexplate: 30 Ultimate Ability Haste from Hexcharged, and Overdrive gives Attack Speed and Move Speed for 8 seconds after each Cataclysm, which is exactly when he’s inside the ring with someone.
Third, Sterak’s Gage. Lifeline shields him when a hit would drop him below 30% Health, and 20% Tenacity helps against the crowd control a whole team throws at the Jarvan who just jumped in.
Death’s Dance closes the build. Ignore Pain pushes part of the damage he takes into a 3-second delay, and Defy wipes that delayed damage off and heals him when a champion he hit dies, which happens a lot inside Cataclysm.
Want a tankier version? Swap Hexplate for Zeke’s Convergence. Casting his ult summons a storm for 5 seconds that slows enemy champions by 30% and burns them, and those champions are stuck in the arena with him anyway. Plated Steelcaps against AD-heavy teams, Mercury’s Treads when the enemy has more crowd control and magic damage.
How should Jarvan IV start fights?
- Throw the flag behind the target. Dragon Strike then pulls him through them, knocking up everyone on the line.
- Poke with Dragon Strike alone when the flag is down. It still lowers Armor, which helps your carries.
- Ult the carry, not the tank. Cataclysm walls in everyone near the landing, so a backline target separates their damage from their front line.
- Golden Aegis after landing. The slow keeps trapped enemies inside with you.
- Grab health relics between fights. There’s no recall to heal up.
Which summoner spells and fountain buys work for Jarvan IV?
You lock spells in the lobby and keep them all game. Flash is his standard partner, since the flag and lance combo followed by Flash reaches targets the combo alone can’t. Mark is the ARAM alternative: hit the snowball, dash to the target, and you’ve got a free gap closer while E and Q are saved for the knock-up. Which one wins? Honestly, Mark if your team has no other engage, Flash if it does.
Your only shop visits are the opening one and each respawn, since recall doesn’t exist here. Aim to finish Black Cleaver on the first trip if the gold allows (Carve comes only with the finished item, not its components). Since Martial Cadence and Dragon Strike are all physical, a few early Armor penetration or AD components never go to waste.
Is Jarvan IV good in ARAM?
Yes, mostly. Unchanged numbers (100% damage dealt, 100% damage taken), a narrow lane for multi-target knock-ups and an ult that splits teams make him a strong engage pick. His weak spot is the long ult cooldown and champions who can dash over Cataclysm’s walls.
You’ll find the champions that give him trouble in the Jarvan IV counters guide, and the stats for every item above are in our item pages. Every Jarvan look Riot has released, from the base Exemplar onward, sits on the Jarvan IV skins page.
Put simply, your Jarvan IV ARAM build starts with Black Cleaver and Hexplate, adds Sterak’s and Death’s Dance, and runs on Steelcaps; the plan in fights is flag behind, Cataclysm on the backline, shred whoever’s left.
FAQ
Does Jarvan IV have ARAM nerfs?
No. Damage dealt and damage taken both sit at 100% in the Wiki’s patch 26.21 data, which means no change.
Which item should Jarvan IV finish first?
Black Cleaver. Its Carve stacks on top of the Armor reduction from Dragon Strike.
Why build Experimental Hexplate on Jarvan IV?
Hexcharged adds Ultimate Ability Haste, and Overdrive gives Attack Speed and Move Speed for 8 seconds after each Cataclysm.
Who should Jarvan IV target with Cataclysm?
A backline carry. Cataclysm walls in everyone near the landing, cutting that carry off from their front line.
How was this Jarvan IV build chosen?
From his patch 26.21 kit and item descriptions: physical damage with Armor shred, a long ult cooldown and dive fights. No win-rate data was used.
