Karthus ARAM Build and Guide

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability text comes from Riot’s official game data for this patch, and ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.

A Karthus ARAM build is a burst-and-burn mage build: Malignance for more Requiems and Mana, Liandry’s Torment, Rabadon’s Deathcap, then Void Staff on Sorcerer’s Shoes. He’s nerfed here (90% dealt, 105% taken). Why? Lay Waste spam into one crowded lane.

Each Karthus ARAM item was matched to something specific in his patch 26.21 kit; win rates never entered into it.

Why is Karthus nerfed in ARAM?

ARAM modifier Karthus
Damage dealt 90%
Damage taken 105%

Lay Waste has no cooldown. In a lane where the enemy team stands in a small strip all game, a mage who can drop delayed blasts on them over and over gets a lot of free damage, and Requiem hitting every champion matters more when fights never stop. Riot trims him on both lines: 90% damage dealt and 105% damage taken. Does it make him weak? Not really (he’s still one of the scarier mages to see on the enemy side of the loading screen).

How does Karthus play on the Howling Abyss?

His kit, from Riot’s patch 26.21 data:

  • Death Defied (passive): when he dies, he becomes a spirit that can keep casting.
  • Lay Waste (Q): a delayed blast on a spot, stronger against isolated enemies.
  • Wall of Pain (W): a screen that slows and lowers Magic Resist of enemies passing through. Cooldown 15.
  • Defile (E): Mana on kills passively; when toggled, area damage around him that burns his Mana quickly.
  • Requiem (R): a 3-second channel, then damage to every enemy champion. Cooldown 200/180/160.

Death Defied is the ARAM highlight. Most deaths here happen in the middle of a five-on-five, and Karthus keeps casting after his, so the enemy team that dives him still eats Lay Waste, Defile and sometimes a full Requiem from his spirit. Wall of Pain is the other tool that shines. The lane is narrow enough that a single wall can cover its width, which means divers have to walk through it and lose Move Speed and Magic Resist. Thing is, he has no escape, and the 105% damage taken line makes that hurt more.

What is the best Karthus ARAM build?

Malignance first. Scorn grants 20 Ultimate Ability Haste for more Requiems, and Hatefog burns the ground under every champion his ult damages, reducing their Magic Resist; Requiem damages all of them. The 600 Mana also feeds Defile.

Liandry’s Torment second. Torment burns enemies for 2% max Health per second for 3 seconds after any damaging ability, and Suffering adds up to 6% damage the longer he fights champions. With Lay Waste on no cooldown, the burn barely ever drops off.

Then comes Rabadon’s Deathcap, which multiplies everything above it through Magical Opus (total Ability Power up by 30%, on top of 130 flat). Void Staff closes the build with 40% Magic Penetration for tanks. Sorcerer’s Shoes are the default boots. Facing heavy dive (assassins, Malphite, the usual)? Zhonya’s Hourglass gives 2.5 seconds of Stasis and 50 Armor, which suits a mage who can’t run.

How should Karthus position in teamfights?

  • Spam Lay Waste from max range. It has no cooldown, so poke between waves constantly.
  • Wall the lane when they dive. Crossing Wall of Pain cuts Move Speed and Magic Resist.
  • Channel Requiem when several enemies are low. It hits every enemy champion after 3 seconds.
  • Toggle Defile in the middle of fights, especially after dying. It drains Mana, but the spirit form doesn’t care.
  • Walk back to a health relic instead of staying low. No recall exists here.

Which summoner spells and fountain buys work for Karthus?

Summoner spells lock before the game loads. Flash is close to mandatory, since he has no other way out of a dive. Mark makes little sense on a mage who wants to stand at the back; to be fair, it can help a Karthus in a team with no engage at all, but that’s rare.

Honestly, the fountain trips are simple: you buy when the game opens and again every time you respawn. On a champion who keeps casting after dying, the death timer is less painful than usual, and the first trip back should finish Malignance if the gold is there. Health relics keep him topped up between waves.

Is Karthus good in ARAM?

Yes, despite the nerfs (90% damage dealt, 105% damage taken). Free Lay Waste spam into a crowded lane, a wall that blocks it, and a passive that turns his deaths into extra damage all fit the mode. His problem is dive: no escape at all.

Check the Karthus counters guide for the champions who catch him, and the Karthus skins page for his looks.

Long story short: Malignance into Liandry’s, then Deathcap and Void Staff, on Sorcerer’s Shoes, is the Karthus ARAM build that fits his kit best. Poke nonstop, wall the divers, close fights with Requiem.
