Mosstomper Seedling is the tank’s jungle pet in League of Legends. For 450 gold in patch 26.21 you get no stats, no sell value and no upgrade path, only the Jungle Companions passive: a Mosstomper that helps you kill monsters, grows as you clear, empowers your Smite, and once fully grown completes the Jungle Quest and gives you a Shield while you are out of combat and after you kill large monsters.
What does Mosstomper Seedling do once grown?
It shields you between fights. Stay out of combat for a moment and the Shield builds up; kill a large monster and you get it straight away, so a jungler who finishes Raptors and walks into a gank arrives with a buffer of Health on top of the real bar.
That buffer is what makes the Seedling different from its siblings. The Scorchclaw adds damage to a gank and the Gustwalker gets you there faster, while the Mosstomper lets you take the first hit for free, which matters most for champions whose job is to go in first and absorb the enemy’s reaction. Is it a big shield? Not late, when Health bars run into thousands, but through the first fifteen minutes it is often the difference between a level three invade you win and one you lose (and early invades decide a lot of jungle games).
Why does the database show 0% efficiency?
Because the Seedling has no stat line to price. Our method values only the stats that basic items sell, and a companion that clears camps, upgrades Smite and hands out shields is not a stat, so the table shows zero. Read that as “not measurable”, not as “bad”.
The real return on 450 gold is a jungle clear that actually works, the jungle item’s gold and experience over a game, and the Smite upgrade, all of which every jungler needs regardless of pet. The sell value is 0 gold, which tells you the item is a role tool rather than a purchase you trade in. Honestly, nobody weighs the pets on efficiency; they weigh them on which effect their champion is missing.
Who should take Mosstomper Seedling?
Tanks and engage junglers above all: Sejuani, Zac, Maokai, Amumu, Rammus, Jarvan IV, Vi, Nautilus when he jungles, Skarner. Divers too. Xin Zhao and Warwick, who expect the enemy to turn on them, take it in many games (the shield covers the first second of a dive, which is the second that kills them).
The pattern is simple. If your champion starts fights and expects to soak a lot of damage, the Shield is worth more than a Slow or a speed burst; if your champion ends fights or avoids them, one of the other two pets does more. Thing is, the cost of a wrong pick is small, since all three companions clear at the same pace and only the grown effect differs. For a damage jungler the Scorchclaw Pup is the usual alternative, and for a tempo jungler the Gustwalker Hatchling.
How has it changed over the patches?
Three entries since it arrived in patch 12.22 with the companion system: effect text changes in patches 13.20, 26.1 and 26.9. Riot has reworded the Seedling more often than the other two pets, which fits how often the shield rules have moved (how long out of combat, how big after a large monster). For what it’s worth, none of those changes altered what the pet is for. The LoL items database keeps the same short history for all three.
When is it the right choice?
When you are the frontline of your team from the jungle and expect to be the first champion hit in every skirmish. In practice that covers most tank junglers in most games, and the choice only gets interesting on fighters who could go either way. New to the position and unsure whether your pick is a frontliner at all? Our guide to LoL roles explains what the jungler owes the team in the early game, and Mosstomper Seedling is the companion for the junglers who owe it a body in front.
